The latest developments in the structural analysis of aluminium
components are presented here giving background to design rules
which enables designers to gain the confidence to follow
progressive ideas, supported by accurate and perceptive structural
analysis.
This book reviews the development of research into the explosive loading of structures, mainly since the beginning of the twentieth century. Major contributions in the fields of measurement, analysis and prediction are discussed. Dynamic loading from conventional high explosives is examined, as well as the effects of liquid propellant, dust, gas, vapour, and fuel/air explosions. Subjects include blast in tunnels, underground and underwater explosions, pressure measurement and blast stimulation. Explosive effects on civil buildings, civil bridges, aircraft and ships are summarized, including the estimation of residual strength. The concluding passages refer to structural safety and reliability. eBook available with sample pages: 0203473868

Much of the infrastructure of modern society is buried below
ground. Pipeline, conduits and culverts carry the services on which
our economies depend and the strength and resilience of such
structures is of vital importance. Larger underground construction
is becoming more common in cities and towns, and in defence
installations. This book brings together the store of theoretical,
analytical, experimental and design-based knowledge that has been
built up on the subject of buried structures. The author discusses
the principles of soil arching, stress distribution and soil
properties, as well as the design problems of static and dynamic
loads, strength and safety. The stability of thin-walled buried
structures receives particular attention, as does the behaviour of
underground construction under localized and nuclear explosions.
Test facilities and design codes of practice are reviewed, and the
range of structures discussed in the book extends from thick- and
thin-walled culverts, conduits and water pipelines to arches,
domes, spherical shells, vertical capsules, blast shelters and
thin-walled road tunnels.
The response of structures and structural elements to explosive
shock or high speed impact is of growing interest to scientists,
research engineers and designers throughout the world. Attacks on
civil and military buildings, bridges and transport vehicles by
terrorists mean that more attention has to be given at the design
stage to the effects of explosions and impact, and to high speed
penetration of attack weapons. This book brings together the
experience of specialists in the behaviour of concrete and metal
structures, both above and below the ground, to actions of blast,
penetration and high speed collisions.
