Unlike legislatures or administrative agencies, courts do not make policy so much as direct and redirect policy as it is implemented. The judicial contribution to policymaking involves the infusion of constitutional rights into the realm of public policy, and as the government has grown, the courts have become more powerful from doing more and more of this. (Professor Donald Akenson, Queen's University, Canada) A commentary on the Book of Revelation entitled A General History of the Christian Church (1771), written by an English Catholic bishop contained a prophecy that predicted the destruction of Protestantism in 1825. Summarized in a broadsheet and widely disseminated in Ireland, the prophecy drew on a receptivity in Irish popular culture to apocalyptic change. Reinforced by folk religion, poetry and ballad, the prophecy generated high expectations among Irish Catholics that a complete overthrow of the social and political order was imminent. The prophecy was appropriated by the Rockite agrarian movement of the early 1820s to give potency and legitimation to traditional grievances. The vacuum created by the demise of the agrarian movement was filled by the Catholic Association and Daniel O'Connell who utilized the prophecy for the attainment of Catholic emancipation in 1829. Dissemination of the prophecy resulted in a rise in sectarianism and contributed to an exodus from Ireland of large numbers of Protestants thereby creating an Irish spiritual diaspora particularly in British North America. This book reveals how a misinterpretation of the passages from Revelation heightened sectarian fervour that left a lasting legacy.

This volume contains forty-one papers presented at the Eleventh International Symposium on Acoustical Imaging held on 4-7 Ma~ in Monterey, California. The objective of this conference series is to bring together workers in diverse areas and applications of Acoustical Imaging for interaction and exchange of ideas. People working in other aspects of scalar wave theory and applications also benefit from this series. The papers presented here demonstrate continued growth in the activity of this field. In this conference there was emphasis on New Techniques, Acoustic Tomography, Tissue Characterization, Signal Processing, Inversion Techniques, and Transducers and Arrays. The success and stimulation of the conference and of the papers presented in this volume is owed, of course to the authors and participants. Over the last decade our view of chemistry has evolved substantially. Whereas individual researchers previously focused on specific areas of chemistry, such as inorganic, organic, etc. we now take a more holistic approach. Effective and efficient research projects now incorporate whatever aspects of the chemistry subdisciplines that are needed to complete the intended work. The main group elements have always been used in this manner. Depending on the use of the elements, the resulting work can be described under any heading of chemistry. The group 13 elements have been special in this regard due to the very unique characters of the constituent elements. Thus, there is a dramatic change in the properties of the elements when proceeding through the series, B, A1, Ga, In, T1. This difference is one of the main reasons why these elements have seen, and continue to see, such widespread usage in such disparate applications as organic synthesis, electronic and structural materials, and catalysis, to name but a few.

How do their views interact with the demands of the market and the structure of the industry to determine the product that is seen by mass audiences?"Hollywood's America" is a marvelously rich and careful discussion of these questions. It combines a meticulous systematic content analysis of fifty years of top-grossing films with a history of the changing structure of the industry. To that mixture it adds an in-depth survey of Hollywood's creative elite, comparing them to other leadership groups. The result is a balanced discussion of unique breadth and depth on a subject of national importance.Placing the film industry in the context of American society as a whole, the authors point out that Hollywood's creative leadership impacts the larger society even as it is influenced by that society. The creators of films cannot remove themselves too far from the values of the audiences that they serve. However, the fact that films are made by a relatively small number of people, who, as the authors demonstrate, tend to share a common outlook, means that, over time, motion pictures have had an undeniable impact on the beliefs, lifestyles, and action of Americans.This study contributes to the debate over the role and influence of those who create and distribute the products of mass culture in the United States.The book also contains a devastating critique of the poststructuralist theories that currently dominate academic film criticism, demonstrating how they fail in their attempt to explain the political significance of motion pictures.

This is a scholarly new study of Ireland during the eighteenth century. It is the first full-scale examination of an entire Irish county for the period, and is based on extensive and meticulous research. In it, Thomas P. Power sets out to reconstruct in detail the economic, social, and political history of Tipperary, Ireland's largest inland county. The examines the growing commercialization of the local economy, the changing composition of landed society, the dynamics of land tenure, sectarian tension, and the emergence of long-term rural unrest. In addition, he devotes a chapter to the revolutionary decade of the 1790s. By testing at local level the relevance of generalizations made for Ireland as a whole, the book makes a valuable contribution to current debates on the nature of Irish social and economic development in this period.
