Drawing together the work of leading researchers from various
disciplines and backgrounds, this illuminating Research Handbook
contributes to a revitalised understanding of migration governance.
It introduces novel debates regarding how actors and institutions
shape significant migration dynamics. This erudite Research
Handbook features a systematic review of the analytical framework
of global migration governance. Chapters identify and explain key
institutions involved in global migration, focusing on changes in
patterns and actor behaviours. Key actors explored in the Research
Handbook include international organisations, migrant networks,
civil society groups, smuggling cartels, religious transnational
organisations, security firms and trade unions. Ultimately, it aims
to contribute to a renewed understanding of migration drivers and
proceedings. Students and advanced scholars of international
relations and politics studying topics such as migration policy
will find this thorough Research Handbook to be incredibly
valuable. Experts and agents of international and non-government
organisations will additionally find it to be beneficial.
This timely book scrutinises the mechanisms for guaranteeing
respect for the rule of law in the European legal system. Focusing
on external relations, it assesses the capacity of the EU to
disseminate these values as a global actor and offers novel
suggestions for how this capacity could be exercised more
effectively. Using EU legislation and case law, the book identifies
the essential elements of the rule of law, and distinguishes the
general limits it places on the behaviour of public authorities.
Focusing on EU sanctions, trade policy and relations with
neighbouring and membership candidate countries, it argues that the
EU’s promotion of the rule of law internally and externally has
strengthened considerably over time. Nevertheless, given the
degradation of the rule of law on the international scene,
contributors call for an overhaul of EU rule of law policy to
uphold the EU’s ethical commitments and strengthen its
international standing. This book will be an important read for
scholars and students of European law, trade law and international
relations. Presenting detailed analyses of EU policy and case law,
it will also be highly useful for practitioners and policy-makers
seeking to promote human rights and democracy.
Elgar Research Agendas outline the future of research in a given
area. Leading scholars are given the space to explore their subject
in provocative ways, and map out the potential directions of
travel. They are relevant but also visionary. This timely Research
Agenda provides imaginative solutions to existing and emerging
challenges for the study, application, and development of water
law. It argues for a dynamic approach to water law, anticipating
how water and its relationship to humanity will shift due to
climate change, modern societal norms and values, and technological
innovation. Bringing together leading experts and rising new
voices, this Research Agenda analyses local, national, and
international water law. It explores the pressing issues of today
and tomorrow, and identifies areas for further research to ensure
legal regimes can respond to future challenges for water provision.
Contributors consider the legal personhood of rivers, water
quality, international basins, water markets, and the role of
indigenous groups in water management. Ultimately, this Research
Agenda provides a portfolio of options for responding to the
uncertain natural, social, and political future of water. Providing
a cutting-edge overview of the challenges facing water law locally,
nationally, and internationally, A Research Agenda for Water Law
will be a valuable resource for scholars of water law,
environmental law, and public international law. It will also be
essential reading for policy-makers seeking to build future-facing
water law regimes.

sorrows in the local bar, where they soon attract the attention of
every man in the vicinity. When Ellie subsequently disappears,
Stephanie turns to the police for help - only to find that the
local authorities already have their hands full with a string of
unsolved kidnappings targeting young female tourists.
How can an organisation, public or private, ensure that it always
operates in top form and, at the very least, meets the objectives
for which it was established? The answer lies in the availability
of factually correct, dependable and appropriate data. Obtaining
such data is what this publication is about. Introduction to
research offers a step-by-step approach to the fundamentals of
research. Introduction to research guides the novice researcher
through the research process, including how to choose the
appropriate research methodology and how to adhere to the standards
for conducting ethical research. It provides a synopsis of the
entire research process, including the formulation of a research
proposal. Introduction to research is aimed at all students and
researchers, across a variety of disciplines.
With contributions from leading scholars in Southern Europe, this
compelling book demonstrates the plurality of migratory
circumstances and analyses the significance of the Mediterranean
migration model. Highlighting the challenges of studying the
variability and heterogeneity of migratory patterns in the
Mediterranean, this insightful book provides a comprehensive
examination of the spatial-temporal scales and sedimentation of
different migratory configurations. Chapters explore the
continuities between colonial past, postcolonialism and migration;
the integration and exploitation in the labour market; and the
impact of political discourses on migrants and non-migrants.
Contributors analyse the links between race and gender relations,
colonialism, and migration policies across countries including
Greece, Italy, Lebanon, the Maghreb region, and Spain. Proposing
that the ‘principle of coexistence’ can be an interpretive tool
for studying migration in the Mediterranean, this book will be
essential for students and researchers in comparative social
policy, cultural sociology, development studies, history and
migration studies. It will also be beneficial for policymakers and
practitioners in national and international political bodies and
agencies.

A beguiling blend of noir detective story and science fiction
perfect for fans of Michael Chabon and Emily St. John Mandel, "this
fiercely intelligent and utterly original debut" (Anna North, New
York Times bestselling author) imagines a world where emotions have
been weaponized, and a small-town law enforcement agent uncovers a
conspiracy to take down what's left of American democracy. In an
alternate 2009, the United States has been a second-rate power for
a quarter of a century, ever since Argentina's victory in the
Falkland's War thanks to their development of "psychopigments."
Created as weapons, these colorful chemicals can produce almost any
human emotion upon contact, and they have been embraced in the US
as both pharmaceutical cure-alls and popular recreational drugs.
Black market traders illegally sell everything from Blackberry
Purple (which causes terror) to Sunshine Yellow (which delivers
happiness). Psychopigment Enforcement Agent Kay Curtida works a
beat in Daly City, just outside the ruins of San Francisco, chasing
down smalltime crooks. But when an old friend shows up with a
tantalizing lead on a career-making case, Curtida's humdrum
existence suddenly gets a boost. Little does she know that this
case will send her down a tangled path of conspiracy and lead to an
overdue reckoning with her family and with the truth of her own
emotions. Told in the voice of a funny, brooding, Latinx Sam Spade,
The Shamshine Blind is "a rip-roaring beautifully crafted mash-up
of cop noir, sci-fi, and alt-history that left me dazzled by its
prescience and literary zing" (Leah Hampton, author of F*ckface).
The first in an extraordinary middle-grade fantasy series that
takes the traditional "chosen one" narrative and flips it on its
head. Think Nevermoor and The School for Good and Evil, but with a
thrilling twist! A boy with no memory. A world searching for a
hero. Casander Darkbloom has no memory, lives outside a curiosity
shop, and experiences random surges of uncontrollable energy in his
limbs. When he inexplicably brings a stuffed raven to life, he
unravels a strange and thrilling magical world. A world waiting for
Cas to save it. Cas is the Foretold, the one prophesied to defeat
the malevolent Master of All. Under the protection of Wayward
School, Cas must learn to master his magical abilities. But, as he
soon discovers, all may not be quite as it seems – and Cas will
need to take control of his own destiny if he is to find the
strength to fight the powers of evil. Spectacular and imaginative,
this thrilling fantasy novel celebrates difference and how what
makes us unique is also our greatest strength.

How an iconic bird’s final days exposed the reality of human
caused extinction The great auk is one of the most tragic and
documented examples of extinction. A flightless bird that bred
primarily on the remote islands of the North Atlantic, the last of
its kind were killed in Iceland in 1844. GÃsli Pálsson draws on
firsthand accounts from the Icelanders who hunted the last great
auks to bring to life a bygone age of Victorian scientific
exploration while offering vital insights into the extinction of
species. Pálsson vividly recounts how British ornithologists John
Wolley and Alfred Newton set out for Iceland to collect specimens
only to discover that the great auks were already gone. At the
time, the Victorian world viewed extinction as an impossibility or
trivialized it as a natural phenomenon. Pálsson chronicles how
Wolley and Newton documented the fate of the last birds through
interviews with the men who killed them, and how the naturalists’
Icelandic journey opened their eyes to the disappearance of species
as a subject of scientific concern—and as something that could be
caused by humans. Blending a richly evocative narrative with rare,
unpublished material as well as insights from ornithology,
anthropology, and Pálsson’s own North Atlantic travels, The Last
of Its Kind reveals how the saga of the great auk opens a window
onto the human causes of mass extinction.
This title is intended to make it easier for undergraduate law and
commerce students to gain a proper appreciation of the principles
of business entities as laid down in the cases. The title will
provide students who do not have ready access to the law reports
with a selection of extracts from the leading English and South
African cases on mainly company and partnership law. It is written
for use in conjunction with standard text books on the subject.
This innovative book employs genre as a fruitful lens for exploring
the complexity of science communication online and the new genre
assemblages formed at the interface of multiple genres in digital
environments. Pérez-Llantada and Luzón argue for a
conceptualization of Science 2.0 that views digital genres in
conjunction with other genres, accounting for the ways in which
diverse Internet users choose different points of entry for
accessing information on science of varied depth, views, and
perspectives. Taking Swales’s conceptualization of forms of genre
collectivity as its point of departure, the book puts forward this
new understanding of multisemiotic genre assemblages in digital
science communication, considering dimensions of hypertextuality,
intertextuality, and multimodality in the interdependent relations
between genres. The volume draws on a range of case studies each
with a distinct genre assemblage and social agenda, exploring such
areas as high stakes science, open peer review, science
reproducibility, citizen science, and social media networking.
Offering new directions for future research on genre studies and
digital science communication, Genre Networks: Intersemiotic
Relations in Digital Science Communication will be of interest to
scholars in these fields, as well as those working in
multimodality, language and communication, and languages for
academic purposes.
This Research Handbook offers a comprehensive and state-of-the-art
collection on the competition law (antitrust) prohibition of abuse
of a dominant position and monopolization. It draws from the long

European Union and the United States to analyse applicable rules
and policy in these jurisdictions. It also takes a comparative
approach to identify common threads and differences. Bringing
together contributions from authoritative legal and economic
experts, it provides an in-depth analysis of foundational legal and
economic principles which guide the Research Handbook’s
exploration of the concept and prohibition of abuse of a dominant
position. With comprehensive breadth, an interdisciplinary
approach, and trans-Atlantic coverage, this Research Handbook
covers various important topics including market definition and
market power, different types of abuse, enforcement, cross-cutting
issues such as mandated neutrality, big data and the interface of
competition and regulation. The blend of theoretical study and
practical advice on the topic will make this a vital resource for
scholars and advanced students wanting a rounded appreciation of
this area of the law, whilst practitioners, competition officials,
and policymakers will also find this a beneficial companion.
