The series Topics in Current Chemistry Collections presents
critical reviews from the journal Topics in Current Chemistry
organized in topical volumes. The scope of coverage is all areas of
chemical science including the interfaces with related disciplines
such as biology, medicine and materials science. The goal of each
thematic volume is to give the non-specialist reader, whether in
academia or industry, a comprehensive insight into an area where
new research is emerging which is of interest to a larger
scientific audience. Each review within the volume critically
surveys one aspect of that topic and places it within the context
of the volume as a whole. The most significant developments of the
last 5 to 10 years are presented using selected examples to
illustrate the principles discussed. The coverage is not intended
to be an exhaustive summary of the field or include large
quantities of data, but should rather be conceptual, concentrating
on the methodological thinking that will allow the non-specialist
reader to understand the information presented. Contributions also
offer an outlook on potential future developments in the field.

One Saturday morning, the Mouse brothers set off in search of
adventure. They were very happy: the big one, the middle-sized one,
and the little one. Next to the path, they saw something
glittering, like a little piece of the sun. It was a little golden
key. But what did it open? Sometimes we look far and wide and miss
the most important thing; what's so near, and within each and every
one of us. Lexile Level 680L Guided Reading Level J

diseases like leishmaniasis, although additional factors also play
a role in this phenomenon. This volume is the second edition of a
well-received book that provides a comprehensive update on the
pathology of the disease, as well as on the concept of parasitic
drug resistance, its molecular basis, consequences and possible
treatments. A valuable resource for scientists both from academia
and industry involved in biomedical research and drug design, the
book provides the knowledge needed to understand leishmaniasis and
to contibute to combatting this disease worldwide.
My First Book of Japanese Words is a beautifully illustrated book
that introduces young children to Japanese language and culture
through everyday words. The words profiled in this book are all
commonly used in the Japanese language and are both informative and
fun for English-speaking children to learn. The goals of My First
Book of Japanese Words are multiple: to familiarize children with
the sounds and structure of Japanese speech, to introduce core
elements of Japanese culture, to illustrate the ways in which
languages differ in their treatment of everyday sounds and to show
how, through cultural importation, a single word can be shared
between languages. Both teachers and parents will welcome the
book's cultural and linguistic notes and appreciate how the book is
organized in a familiar ABC structure. Each word is presented in
Kanji (when applicable), Kana, and Romanized form (Romaji). With
the help of this book, we hope more children (and adults) will soon
be a part of the 125 million people worldwide that speak Japanese!
Padron reveals the evolution of Spain's imagining of the New World
as a space in continuity with Asia. Narratives of Europe's westward
expansion often tell of how the Americas came to be known as a
distinct landmass, separate from Asia and uniquely positioned as
new ground ripe for transatlantic colonialism. But this geographic
vision of the Americas was not shared by all Europeans. While some
imperialists imagined North and Central America as undiscovered
land, the Spanish pushed to define the New World as part of a
larger and eminently flexible geography that they called las
Indias, and that by right, belonged to the Crown of Castile and
Leon. Las Indias included all of the New World as well as East and
Southeast Asia, although Spain's understanding of the relationship
between the two areas changed as the realities of the Pacific Rim
came into sharper focus. At first, the Spanish insisted that North
and Central America were an extension of the continent of Asia.
Eventually, they came to understand East and Southeast Asia as a
transpacific extension of their empire in America called las Indias
del poniente, or the Indies of the Setting Sun. The Indies of the
Setting Sun charts the Spanish vision of a transpacific imperial
expanse, beginning with Balboa's discovery of the South Sea and
ending almost a hundred years later with Spain's final push for
control of the Pacific. Padron traces a series of attempts-both
cartographic and discursive-to map the space from Mexico to
Malacca, revealing the geopolitical imaginations at play in the
quest for control of the New World and Asia.
The Spanish Pacific designates the space Spain colonized or aspired
to rule in Asia between 1521 -- with the arrival of Ferdinand
Magellan -- and 1815 -- the end of the Manila-Acapulco galleon
trade route. It encompasses what we identify today as the
Philippines and the Marianas, but also Spanish America, China,
Japan, and other parts of Asia that in the Spanish imagination were
extensions of its Latin American colonies. This reader provides a
selection of documents relevant to the encounters and entanglements
that arose in the Spanish Pacific among Europeans, Spanish
Americans, and Asians while highlighting the role of natives,
mestizos, and women. A-first-of-its-kind, each of the documents in
this collection was selected, translated into English, and edited
by a different scholar in the field of early modern Spanish Pacific
studies, who also provided commentary and bibliography.

One of the main problems concerning therapeutic tools for the
treatment of parasitic diseases, including leishmaniasis, is that
some field parasites are naturally resistant to the classical
drugs; additionally, current therapies may select parasites prone
to be resistant to the applied drugs. These features are (at least
partially) responsible for the disappointing persistence of the
disease and resultant deaths worldwide. This book provides a
comprehensive view of the pathology of the disease itself, and of
parasitic drug resistance, its molecular basis, consequences and
possible treatments. Scientists both from academic fields and from
the industry involved in biomedical research and drug design, will
find in this book a valuable and fundamental guide that conveys the
knowledge needed to understand and to improve the success in
combating this disease worldwide.

When Little Fox gets lost, he knows exactly what to do. Little
Fox's paw prints make such beautiful pictures in the newly fallen
snow. Left here, right there, around that fallen branch-he scatters
them throughout the forest until, too late, he finds he can't
retrace his steps back home. Lost and afraid, Little Fox wants to
agree when a kind, old owl offers to fly ahead and guide him. But
Mama Fox has warned him often: "If ever you are lost, my child, /
don't let a stranger guide you. / Be still and I will search the
wild / until I am beside you." In gentle, expressive text, Nicole
Snitselaar spins a tale that goes far beyond a simple "stranger
danger" warning. Her Little Fox, equipped with his own ingenuity as
well as his mother's wisdom, cleverly finds a way for the other
animals to attract Mama Fox's attention while keeping himself safe.
Alicia Padron renders this resilient Little Fox and his forest
companions in soft watercolors, their rounded shapes and endearing
features easing any anxiety that little listeners might feel about
being lost. "...Padron's cute animals and soft scenes of winter
woods, done in muted grays, blues, and earth tones, pair well with
the gentle words of this story to reach a satisfying conclusion and
a gentle lesson for the very young...."-Kirkus Reviews
