Big Data is everywhere. It shapes our lives in more ways than we
know and understand. This comprehensive introduction unravels the
complex terabytes that will continue to shape our lives in ways
imagined and unimagined. Drawing on case studies like Amazon,
Facebook, the FIFA World Cup and the Aadhaar scheme, this book
looks at how Big Data is changing the way we behave, consume and
respond to situations in the digital age. It looks at how Big Data
has the potential to transform disaster management and healthcare,
as well as prove to be authoritarian and exploitative in the wrong
hands. The latest offering from the authors of Artificial
Intelligence: Evolution, Ethics and Public Policy, this accessibly
written volume is essential for the researcher in science and
technology studies, media and culture studies, public policy and
digital humanities, as well as being a beacon for the general
reader to make sense of the digital age.
This book includes a foreword by Nicola Maffulli, Professor of
Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery, Keele University School of
Medicine, and Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, North
Staffordshire Royal Infirmary and City General Hospital,
Staffordshire. The new structure of the Fellowship of the Royal
College of Surgeons (FRCS) examination requires candidates to
complete two papers in extended matching question (EMQ) and
multiple choice question (MCQ) format. This invaluable revision aid
contains a 'bank' of over 350 questions in self-test format.
Comprehensive answers are detailed at the end of each section. With
a focus on high-yield topics, students can choose use the resource
in the early stages as an overview of the subjects, then later as
an ideal exam revision aid. There's nothing else like it!
Specialist registrars preparing for the FRCS (Trauma and
Orthopaedics) examination will find this an essential revision aid.
It is also useful for Basic Surgical Trainees preparing for the
Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS) examination.
This book provides valuable revision and practice for candidates
taking the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS)
examination. It is primarily aimed at Specialist Registrars in
Trauma and Orthopaedics, who are preparing for the Fellowship of
the Royal College of Surgeons examination.

Over the last decade there has been a substantial increase in our
understanding of the genetic basis of common disorders such as
stroke. Stroke Genetics is designed to give the reader an overall
understanding of the genetics of complex diseases by using stroke
as a paradigm. The reader will gain a comprehensive understanding
of cerebrovascular genetics including the epidemiological evidence
for the genetic basis of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, knowledge
of its molecular basis from association, linkage and recent
genome-wide studies, and also monogenic disorders. Finally, the
legal and ethical complexities in dealing with these issues are
discussed. Stroke Genetics benefits from the contribution of
renowned experts from throughout the world who have been intimately
involved in unraveling the genetic etiology of stroke. Stroke
Genetics is a valuable resource for neurologists, stroke
physicians, hypertension specialists, internists, clinical
pharmacologists and those in training, as well as researchers in
the field of disease genetics.
What will the future be? A dystopian landscape controlled by
machines or a brave new world full of possibilities? Perhaps the
answer lies with Artificial Intelligence (AI)-a phenomenon much
beyond technology that has, continues to, and will shape lives in
ways we do not understand yet. This book traces the evolution of AI
in contemporary history. It analyses how AI is primarily being
driven by "capital" as the only "factor of production" and its
consequences for the global political economy. It further explores
the dystopian prospect of mass unemployment by AI and takes up the
ethical aspects of AI and its possible use in undermining natural
and fundamental rights. A tract for the times, this volume will be
a major intervention in an area that is heavily debated but rarely
understood. It will be essential reading for researchers and
students of digital humanities, politics, economics, science and
technology studies, physics, and computer science. It will also be
key reading for policy makers, cyber experts and bureaucrats.

'The very last thing a drug regulator wishes to be able to say is,
like Lord Byron (1788-1824), on the publication of his poem Childe
Harold's Pilgrimage, 'I awoke one morning and found myself famous.'
The twelfth edition of this long-established textbook of clinical
pharmacology (first published in 1960) continues its fine tradition
of balancing science and practice for improved evidence-based drug
therapy and good prescribing in therapeutic settings increasingly
complicated by intercurrent disease and polypharmacy. Coverage of
all major therapeutic topics by body system. Introductory sections
give brief chapter synopses. Case studies where relevant. Covers
the needs of the developing world with a focus on practical
prescribing and health technology assessment. Definition, tips,
brief explanation boxes throughout. Interesting histories,
etymologies and provenances of terms throughout. Entertaining
footnotes throughout. Fully updated throughout. New co-editor: Fraz
Mir, Addenbrooke's Hospital and Department of Medicine, University
of Cambridge. Now with free e-book on StudentConsult.
This book presents a detailed study on the vibration analysis of
functionally graded piezoelectric actuators excited under the shear
effect. Two types of actuator geometries viz. beam and annular
plate are considered, where the material properties are assumed to
have a continuous variation in accordance with a power law
distribution. The generalized differential quadrature method is
used to obtain the solutions, and is compared to exact analytical
results. The methodology reported and the numerical results
presented will be useful for the design of devices utilizing
functionally graded piezoelectric actuators under the influence of
shear.
