Globalisation has evolved to become the dominant economic,
cultural, environmental and political phenomenon of our time. In
economic terms, debates now extend beyond concepts of 'winners and
losers', to key questions of how to deal with the problems
unleashed by globalisation while preserving its benefits. However,
if the benefits of globalisation are fairly shared and the costs
properly dealt with, a deeper economic understanding of how
globalisation is impacting our economic world is needed. This
important book addresses this task, featuring contributions from
many of the world's leading economists. Seven key aspects of
globalisation are considered: trans-border trade, trans-border
movement of people and capital, the emergence of a new
international order, the homogenization of economic cultures,
technology and institutions, labour market consequences, corporate
governance issues, and prospects for a global society. These
carefully chosen themes illuminate the complex path that
globalisation is following by showing it to be a process consisting
of various transitions and subplots, the totality of which is
closely examined in this comprehensive and authoritative work.
Economics of Globalisation is essential reading for academics,
researchers, policy-makers and business professionals.
The Middle East is at an unprecedented crossroads between the
established Euro-centric system and the emerging Asian powerhouses
like India and China. Their economies, policies and social
structures are a half-way-house between these two dominant groups
and are an important case study to examine in order to highlight
future prospects and problems of the global system. The Middle East
is an important missing piece in a huge global puzzle. This book
makes a significant step towards understanding that puzzle and
offers solutions for how to fully integrate this missing jigsaw
piece into the global economic system. Analytical Peace Economics:
The Illusion of War for Peace focuses on three critical issues in
the Middle East that dominate discussions about their place in the
global political economy: conflict, oil and (regional) development.
Examining economic and social development in juxtaposition with
conflict and peace, this book adapts, develops and applies
historical, geographical, economic and psychological methods,
creating a nuanced approach to the collective understanding of the
economic and social dynamics in the region. By developing
theoretical models and analysing empirical research, this book
offers an economic analysis of the attempt to find peace through
war and seeks to find alternative solutions. This book will be of
interest to researchers, policy makers and doctoral students of
economics, finance and social sciences as well as advanced
undergraduate students of peace economics and development studies.

The process of globalisation has its own dynamics and several
serious flaws that have resulted in significant economic, political
and social imbalances in the global political economy. "Peace
Science: Theory and Cases" examines the implications of these
imbalances for achieving lasting global peace. The poorer regions
of the current global system are beset with serious non-mutuality
of interests, rivalry and potential conflicts over scarce
resources, fragile environment, alternative energy sources and due
to declining agricultural productivity and food shortages,
contracting markets and owing to bifurcations in and social
beliefs, mores and norms while the list of flaws goes on ad
infinitum. The global system will need huge collective efforts and
mediation from all branches of modern knowledge in overcoming the
above problems for a sizeable section of the global population.
"Peace Science: Theory and Cases" offers original research to
understand the problems and prospects of global peace in the
context of the above dichotomy of the global system.

Over the last century the world economy has encountered deep and
rapid changes. Over the years these changes have internationally
regionally and locally been transforming our global economic and
social systems. These changes are in political and economic
spheres. Since the last few years of the previous century a new
phenomenon in international economic relations has been on the rise
which aims to increase free international trade and eliminate trade
barriers and restrictions between countries. In addition, joint
efforts are afoot to increase the economic cooperation among
nations in all possible ways. Towards this end, since World War II
several international organizations have been established, such as
the International Monetary Fund, Arab Monetary Fund, Arab League
and the Arab Organization of Investment Guarantee. These
organizations are involved, directly or indirectly, to promote and
grow international trade by a gradual decrease of trade barriers.
They have achieved significant improvements in the field of
international trade, investment and economic growth.
This book offers an extensive and original study of the dynamics of
rivalry, evolution of costly and violent conflicts, and potential
cooperation among powerful players. It unravels the special
features of the global socio-economic system that can make it
extremely fragile and vulnerable. It serves as a good reference
source for anyone interested in some of the pressing and emerging
problems of the global system, such as intra-national and
interethnic conflicts, climate change challenges, poverty and
terrorism, and provides useful and rigorous insights into the
collective bid to resolve some of these problems. Written in a
simple and accessible manner, this book will help researchers and
policy makers in understanding and abetting costly conflicts.
