Women's Religious Experience (RLE Women and Religion) (Paperback): Pat Holden Women's Religious Experience (RLE Women and Religion) (Paperback)
Pat Holden
R1,169 Discovery Miles 11 690 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Most of the early literature concerning women's religious experience is about exceptional women; those who diverged from the traditional female role to become nuns, mystics or charismatic leaders. While women were permitted to be prophets and visionaries they rarely played an important part in church organisation. This paradox is explored in this book and a number of themes emerge: in particular, the dominance of male symbolism within the great religions. The question of whether men and women apprehend religious systems and signs in the same way is also explored. In considering the contemporary scene, the book is able to look at the ways in which religion affects the lives of women in different societies and in different historical periods; this gives us a larger view of the ways in which our own perceptions of 'femaleness' have been constructed out of the religious world views of both the past and the present. First Published in 1983.

Anthropology and Nursing (Paperback): Pat Holden, Jenny Littlewood Anthropology and Nursing (Paperback)
Pat Holden, Jenny Littlewood
R1,232 Discovery Miles 12 320 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Nursing has been described as the most 'natural' female occupation of all, embodying the so-called feminine ideals of tenderness and caring. Yet these ideals are juxtaposed with images of nurses as sex objects, or as ruthlessly efficient harridans. How have these very different images been constructed? And how do they relate to the reality of nursing - the close contact with blood, urine and faeces, and the involvement with the rites of birth, illness and death? This book, first published in 1991, explores the alternative ways different societies have developed to reconcile these contradictions. Using contemporary, historical and cross-cultural case material, the contributors trace the historical development of the role, and investigate the expected qualities of nurses within different cultural settings, such as India, Uganda and Japan. They look closely at 'the nurse' as a social construct, and demonstrate how the stereotypes relate to a particular society's notions of gender. Designed primarily for anthropologists and sociologists interested in health, illness and systems of health care, this book challenges some of the myths of traditional nursing studies and provides an original perspective on doctor/nurse/patient relationships.

1972 Uganda. Freya, naïve and newly married, arrives from England, anxious to settle into expatriate life at an agricultural project with her husband, Roger. When the house servant, Keziah, becomes pregnant, Freya suspects Roger may be the father. Her struggle to come to terms with this, and the eventual birth of the baby, leads her into relationships with Satish, the Asian director of a charity where she takes a job, and with Wensley, a visiting West Indian cricketer. Increasingly at odds with Roger and the narrow world of the expatriate community, Freya’s struggle is set against a backdrop of violence and political turmoil, which culminates in Idi Amin’s expulsion of the Asian community. The upheaval forces a life-change dilemma upon Freya. Her story explores a young woman’s coming of age intellectually, emotionally and sexually. It confronts what is it to be threatened with expulsion from home, and asks where people really belong.
