Every elementary teacher deals with students who struggle as
readers on a daily basis. Each struggling child is complex and each
has a unique history as a learner. In "One Child at a Time,"
experienced literacy specialist and consultant Pat Johnson provides
a framework she has used in numerous K-6 classrooms to help
teachers understand and assist individual children. The four-step
process outlined in the book enables teachers to focus carefully on
specific strategies and behaviors; analyze them with theoretical
and practical lenses; design targeted instruction in keeping with
current research on reading process; and then assess and refine the
teaching in conferences with the child. The framework is by no
means an easy answer to a difficult problem, but through its use
teachers learn how the reading process works for proficient readers
and how to support struggling readers as they construct their own
reading process.
The text is packed with examples of actual conferences with
students, detailing how and when Pat and her colleagues intervene
to instruct and assess. The examples of follow-up assessment and
analysis of struggling readers over days and weeks provide an
indispensable model for teachers.
Pat shows how to use this framework successfully with a range of
learners, including young children, English language learners, and
students in the upper elementary grades who are stalled in their
literacy progress. She builds upon her decades of work as a
classroom teacher, literacy specialist, and consultant in schools
with high poverty and diversity, to demonstrate how this framework
can be useful in any setting.
Every teacher of reading plays a vital role in helping to catch
those readers for whom learning to read does not come easily. If
you have ever been at a loss for what to say and do when confronted
with a child who struggles—this book is for you. Through examples
from both adults and children, the authors explain and describe the
complex integrated network of strategies that goes on in the minds
of proficient readers—strategies that struggling readers have to
learn in order to construct their own reading processes. The
examples and scenarios of teacher/student interactions in Catching
Readers Before They Fall provide a sense of how it looks and what
it sounds like to teach strategic actions to struggling readers.
This book is essential reading for all who work with struggling
readers in any context and contains a wealth of resources: A
thorough explanation of all the sources of information readers use
to solve words, including examples of what beginning or struggling
readers might do, and how teachers can respond. Ways in which
teachers can prompt struggling readers to use skills and strategies
effectively. Lessons that model how to use the sources of
information and how to teach for strategies, such as, checking and
confirming, visualizing, questioning, inferring, and others. Ways
to obtain ongoing assessment data consistent with strategy teaching
and suggestions for organization and management. Practical answers
to commonly asked questions from parents. Pat Johnson and Katie
Keier will help you acquire a bounty of teaching ideas to employ as
you work with your readers who struggle
Effective book introductions during guided reading set the stage
for young readers to navigate new texts independently and
successfully and often shape the outcome of small-group lessons.
Many teachers struggle with decisions about what these
introductions should address, what they should include, and how to
conduct them. In Powerful Book Introductions literacy leaders
Kathleen Fay, Chrisie Moritz, and Suzanne Whaley speak to these
concerns by taking a close look at the purposeful planning that
goes into preparing for this small but vital part of today’s
guided reading lessons. Through relatable classroom examples and
the wisdom of their shared teaching experiences, the authors show
you how to: select texts for your small-group lessons specifically
based on your students’ needs amplify meaning making from the
first moments of your guided reading book introductions and
maintain this emphasis introduce visual and structural information
as a way to support your readers in meaning making No matter where
you are in your understanding of guided reading, Powerful Book
Introductions will help you as you learn to craft student-centered,
meaning-driven book introductions that prepare your readers for
success.

Copper enamelling - essentially, the melting of glass enamel grains
onto a copper surface - is an exciting and fascinating technique.
Enamelling on Copper highlights the unique interactions between
copper and enamels, and gives a detailed account of working with
this wonderful combination. The basic technique - simply sifting
ground enamels onto a copper surface and firing the two in a kiln
for one minute - is a thrilling experience, but delving deeper into
the techniques pays even greater rewards. Starting with an
introduction to enamels, this new book goes on to explain how to
work with an enamelling kiln, including temperatures and timings;
the different kinds of enamels and how they work together; the
enamelling process and how to control small sifted particles of the
glass enamels to achieve your designs. A final chapter is devoted
to the practice of firing the enamels higher than is necessary in
order to transform their colours to create unique effects.
