An Analysis of Selected Poetry by William Butler Yeats between 1918 and 1928 (Paperback, 4th Enhanced edition): Patricia Hughes An Analysis of Selected Poetry by William Butler Yeats between 1918 and 1928 (Paperback, 4th Enhanced edition)

The point about poetry, my father used to say, is that you can't pretend. It has to come from the heart, in the same way that a painting reflects your own colours, dictated by your own emotions. It talks about something rational but has to include the warmth of your personal feelings as well as the intensity of rhyme and metre to make it work. Reading Yeats' poetry systematically for the first time I was looking for a relationship with a young woman, leading to the birth of a son brought up by another woman as her own.

Leafing through the Guardian I found a picture of William Butler Yeats receiving his Nobel Prize in 1923. It was a photograph my father used to show me as a child. I always assumed that both men were from a hot country because of their black hair and thick, pale, fast-tanning skin. My father used to avoid Irish people, so I didn't know what they looked like. Suddenly I realised there was a strong, personal resemblance.

William Butler Yeats had an extra-marital lover, Lily O'Neill or Honor Bright, from 1918 to 1925. Garda Superintendent Leopold Dillon murdered her on orders from Kevin O'Higgins, Minister of Justice of the Irish Free State. George, Senator Yeats's wife, reported falsely that Lily was a Republican spy. O'Higgins wanted to restore credence in the Free State, which would otherwise have been reclaimed by the British due to maladministration. Afterwards a bogus trial was concocted outside the court circuit by Chief Superintendent David Neligan, at which Lily was reinvented as a prostitute to conceal Yeats's affair and son, and hide the involvement of Free State officials. On the strength of false evidence the jury unanimously acquitted the assassin after three minutes deliberation.

Seek pirate treasure said to be hidden in Brooklyn, Windham County, Connecticut (you'd have to look out for the headless horseman who was killed for the gold in question). Pirate treasure is said to be buried on Money Hill in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Iakovos Kambanellis wrote 'Freedom came in May' as a result of time spent in Mauthausen Concentration camp in Upper Austria, and the title refers to his unexpected release by American forces in May 1945. His personal memoir is of being arrested with no recourse in law, and of freight journeys between different camps. At the same time ordinary people completely ignored those heading for the camps as they led their normal lives. It was proof of Hannah Arendt's "banality of evil". Further proof is given in the lack of human language for detainees. Human beings controlled as units or numbers are remade as non-human, with no family, occupation or personality, and so can be disposed of at will. Why does such evil occur, and why are there no monsters involved, only ordinary people?Hannah Arendt also spoke of the lack of language among the perpetrators of such evil; if one is unable to apply words of all-pervasive custom to one's actions, such as "no murder', one cannot form the pervasive custom in one's brain.

This is the first part of their story. As far as possible their own words have been used to tell their tale, and the letters and notes in secret code have been translated to give insight into their lives. Anne Lister was born in 1791, the eldest living child of an extended landed family in Halifax in the West Riding of Yorkshire in northern England. As a girl with two brothers she would not inherit, so she decided to write for a living. From 1806 she wrote notes and described events in her life, but from 1817 her life changed - and she wrote her extensive journal every day until her death in 1840. Anne Lister's Diaries are recognised by the European Union as unique. They were donated in 1923 to Halifax Archives in West Yorkshire, England. The recent TV Series 'Gentleman Jack' is based on her life.

Selections from William Butler Yeats' poetry revealing an autobiographical account of his sudden heart problem and severe depression. Both my father and I loved poetry; we quoted it to each other all the time.He had racks of it on his bookshelves and delighted in showing me the beauty and honesty of the mere arrangement of words. When I began to systematically read the later poetry of William Butler Yeats I was looking for the story of his extra-marital lover, a young Catholic woman who gave birth to his first beloved son. But she was murdered and he had to abandon his son. I found everything I was looking for right here in the poetry.
