Even the Angels (Hardcover): Patricia Kelly Santelmann Even the Angels (Hardcover)

R846 Discovery Miles 8 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this recollection of a family tragedy, the author has created a book brimming with life. This skillfully written memoir begins with the report of a car crash that causes the death of the author's mother, brother, sister and aunt, but moves quickly to recount the lives of these vibrant people. Their stories are the heart of this book.
In Aunt Leona's chapter we learn what happens to this timid, conscientious woman when she makes her third confession within ten minutes. In Michaels' chapter, we see mischievous Michael's 8th grade report card with its forest of demerits, and we watch him grow to become a sensitive, witty, law student. We laugh over tomboy Sharon, who becomes a Franciscan nun and sets the convent abuzz with her impulsive ways.
The spirit of the book, however, resides in the story of Agnes, the author's mother. After Agnes's mother died, Agnes was separated from her father and raised by an aunt. Agnes grew up to be an outgoing and optimistic woman. At the age of 21, she married Lloyd Kelly and together they raised 11 children.
Unlike many memoirs that tell of a dysfunctional family, this is a story of a husband and wife who worked together to raise seven sons and four daughters. Both mother and father were shrewd observers of each child's personality and character, and they used their insights to treat each child as an individual. Raising one child to be a successful adult is not easy; raising 11 is a monumental task. The Kellys approached that task with energy and zest.
Even the Angels is a story larger than the family itself. It is the story of how families can live together, work together, play together, and struggle together to make a living and to maintain themselves against the threat of loss and separation. In its essence, this is a book about the ability to appreciate the sweet times of life, yet meet adversity with courage and grace.

Ollam - Studies in Gaelic and Related Traditions in Honor of Tomas O Cathasaigh (Hardcover): Matthieu Boyd Ollam - Studies in Gaelic and Related Traditions in Honor of Tomas O Cathasaigh (Hardcover)
Matthieu Boyd; Anders Ahlqvist, Fergus Kelly, Patricia Kelly, Kim R. McCone, …
R3,066 Discovery Miles 30 660 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Ollam ("ollav"), named for the ancient title of Ireland's chief poets, celebrates the career of Tomas O Cathasaigh, Henry L. Shattuck Professor of Irish Studies at Harvard University, who is one of the foremost interpreters of the rich and fascinating world of early Irish saga literature. It is a complement to his own book of essays, Coire Sois, the Cauldron of Knowledge: A Companion to Early Irish Saga, also edited by Matthieu Boyd (University of Notre Dame Press, 2014), and a sequel to his classic monograph The Heroic Biography of Cormac mac Airt (Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, 1977) and as such it begins to show the richness of his legacy. The essays in Ollam represent cutting-edge research in Celtic philology and historical and literary studies. They form three clusters: heroic legend; law and language; and poetry and poetics. The 21 contributors are among the best Celtic Studies scholars of their respective generations, whether they are rising stars or great professors at the finest universities around the world. The book has a Foreword by William Gillies, Emeritus Professor at the University of Edinburgh and former President of the International Congress of Celtic Studies, who also contributed an essay on courtly love-poetry in the Book of the Dean of Lismore. Other highlight include a new edition and translation of the famous poem Messe ocus Pangur ban; a suite of articarticles on the ideal king of Irish tradition, Cormac mac Airt; and studies on well-known heroes like Cu Chulainn and Finn mac Cumaill. This book will be a must-have, and a treat, for Celtic specialists. To nonspecialists it offers a glimpse at the vast creative energy of Gaelic literature through the ages and of Celtic Studies in the twenty-first century.

Ressourcement Theology - A Sourcebook (Hardcover): Patricia Kelly Ressourcement Theology - A Sourcebook (Hardcover)
Patricia Kelly
R3,378 Discovery Miles 33 780 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Ressourcement Theology: A Sourcebook offers a collection of texts previously unavailable in English from leading Dominicans and Jesuits, who initiated a movement for renewal that contributed to the reforms of the Second Vatican Council. In the last decade, theologians have undertaken a serious reappraisal of the contribution of Ressourcement theology to 20th century theology in the Catholic tradition and beyond. This 'return to Ressourcement' has resulted in many of the principal texts being translated into English and (re-)issued, ensuring their accessibility to scholars across the globe. Despite this, many of the earliest documents relating to the history of Ressourcement theology are unavailable to most English-speaking scholars, as they are largely journal articles and book chapters published in French. Patricia Kelly has selected the most significant texts that so far have been unavailable in English, including the controversial piece by Jean-Marie LeBlond ('The Analogy of Truth') that was condemned in the 1950s by the Vatican, as well as the response to Labourdette's attack on LeBlond, penned anonymously by a group of Jesuits. All of these documents will help students and scholars to engage deeply with the history of the Ressourcement movement and its relevance for the developments of the Catholic tradition.

The main character, Melissa, is girl of seventeen when the story begins, and just a few years older when the book ends. When the Revolution of 1964 killed her parents, she was taken in by a cousin and her husband. Work for an Asian girl was impossible to find after the professional men fled the island with their families. She not have the necessary 56000 shillings the government demanded in order to pay to leave. That amount, in that time, amounted to the total wages of a professional man for seven years.
The parents of Melissa and Tonio always expected them to marry, and they were happy with that. Tonio was already in Tanzania and doing well in the Tax office for which he has been well trained in the English System. He was saving money, but it was impossible to get 56 000 shillings.
After a sad day of looking for non-existent work, Melissa ran into Saidi, a dhow captain and long -time friend of her parents. He knew of her engagement to Tonio, the death of her parents and realized she simply had to flee Zanzibar or she'd be forced into marriage with a man not of her race or religion, who probably already had a wife or two.
Every step of her way seems to bring her to extremely dangerous circumstances, she is blackmailed in Dar, stranded in Masai country, bitten by a mamba, two attempts on her life in one afternoon, massacre of her uncle and his family, as well as knowing kind and good people of every color.
Being married and happy with Tonio, having enough money and friends, turned out not to be enough when Idi Amin and his ilk were in charge. They managed once again to flee, and this time they have sailed into harbor in Australia.
I made up these characters. Ididn't make up the circumstances. I either heard about them from friends or read about them in the Dar Standard. The usual grapevine in Dar is word of mouth, and it works a charm.
I have one other book published, Faraway Rivers, which is, fictionalized history of the life of Etienne Brule.
