This resource provides teachers, librarians, parents, and others who work with children with an annotated bibliography of children's books that contain characters who display positive values as they relate to others. These stories will help children build associations related to their family values, help them understand the importance of the way values support a family, and recognize how values help overcome certain obstacles. A feature of this volume is the inclusion of sample activities and lessons related to the books in the bibliography. Educators and parents can use the activities as Dr. Roberts presents them, or they can use them as starting points for their own activities and lessons. The activities extend the literature by providing thought-provoking exercises and topics for discussion. They reinforce the sometimes subtle presentation of moral qualities by focussing the student's attention on the decision and actions that express them. Parents and educators, including home schooling parents and instructors in religious settings, will benefit from this helpful resource.
All children can benefit from building new friendships and repairing old ones. For the librarian, teacher, or parent who wishes to foster compassionate multicultural relationships between and among children, this manual offers help. It includes an annotated bibliography of children's books that contain characters of different cultural heritages who display friendship with others. For each book listed, Roberts highlights the heritage of the book's main character(s), the age levels for which it is intended, and includes detailed plans, materials to use, objectives, activities, and discussion questions. The stories and accompanying activities will help children build associations with others, understand the value of support groups, and recognize the value of friendships. Sample lessons from selected books show educators and parents how such literature can be used to help children develop friendship skills. Children's books are categorized by family friendships, neighborhood and community friendships, and world friendships. Contains a broad sampling of quality picture books for children ages 5-8, as well as books without pictures for children ages 9-14.
James T. Scott's 1923 lynching in the college town of Columbia, Missouri was precipitated by a case of mistaken identity. Falsely accused of rape, the World War I veteran was dragged from jail by a mob and hanged from a bridge before 1000 onlookers. Patricia L. Roberts lived most of her life unaware that her aunt was the girl who erroneously accused Scott, only learning of it from a 2003 account in the University of Missouri's school newspaper. Drawing on archival research, she tells Scott's full story for the first time in the context of the racism of the Jim Crow Midwest.
