A vital collection of interdisciplinary essays that illuminates the
significance of Marian shrines and promises to teach scholars how
to “read” them for decades to come. American Patroness: Marian
Shrines and the Making of US Catholicism is a collection of twelve
essays that examine the historical and contemporary roles of Marian
shrines in US Catholicism. The essays in this collection use
historical, ethnographic, and comparative methods to explore how
Catholics have used Marian devotion to make an imprint on the
physical and religious landscape of the United States. Using the
dynamic malleability of Marian shrines as a starting place for
studying US Catholicism, each chapter reconsiders the American
religious landscape from the perspective of a single shrine to Mary
and asks: What does this shrine reveal about US Catholicism and
about American religion? Each of the contributors in American
Patroness examines why and how Marian shrines persist in the
twenty-first century and subsequently uses that examination to
re-read contemporary US Catholicism. Because shrines are not
neutral spaces—they reflect and shape the elastic yet strict
boundaries of what counts as Catholic identity, and who controls
prayer practices—the studies in this collection also shed light
on the contested dynamics of these holy sites. American Patroness
demonstrates that Marian shrines continue to be places where an
American Catholic identity is continuously worked on, negotiations
about power occur, and Marian relationships are fostered and
nurtured in spaces that are simultaneously public and intimate.
In a time when the global and national economies seem to favor so
few and harm so many, when the threats to the common good are so
prevalent and so deep, how do people of faith think about these
issues and act with those who are most vulnerable? Living the
Catholic Social Tradition: Cases and Commentary addresses these
challenges through contemporary theory and research conducted
within the framework of the rich Catholic social tradition.
Co-editors Kathleen Maas Weigert and Alexia Kelley combine four
essays from leading scholars with eight concrete case studies based
on community social justice projects across the country. This
unique combination of theory and reflective practice provides
university students and adult learners with a framework for
understanding the Catholic social tradition and a demonstration of
its positive social impact on the people it serves. The reader
first learns about the challenges facing Catholic universities in
educating the current generation about the Catholic social
tradition. The next essays provide insights into the ways in which
the tradition frames and contributes to social change; approaches
to understanding the key concepts and documents that make up the
tradition; and an understanding of the forces confronting change
agents in major metropolitan areas. Undertaken by younger scholars
and activists, the eight case studies tackle the issues that grass
roots groups and visionary leaders face as they try to bring about
positive change in their communities. Living the Catholic Social
Tradition will help readers assess and address different social
justice issues within the framework of Catholic social thought. In
that process, readers are called upon to think how they might not
only contribute to the tradition, but develop it further, thus
bringing the Catholic social tradition alive in contemporary times.

Combining the insight of two-dozen expert contributors to examine
key figures, events, and policies over 200 years of U.S.
immigration history, this work illuminates the foundations of the
ethnic and socioeconomic makeup of our nation. The two-volume The
Making of Modern Immigration: An Encyclopedia of People and Ideas
is organized around a series of four dozen in-depth essays on
specific aspects of American immigration history since the founding
of the Republic. This encyclopedia addresses the major historical
themes and contemporary research trends related to U.S.
immigration, canvassing all the major policy endeavors on
immigration in the last two centuries. In addition to documenting
immigration policy, the contributors devote extensive attention to
the historiography of immigration, supplementing theories with
cutting-edge sociological data. Not content with providing a
comprehensive overview of immigration history, however, the work
also offers probing investigations of key figures behind the ideas
that have shaped the nation's self-understanding. Taken as a whole,
this seminal work lifts out the personalities and policies that
surround the composition of America's national identity,
illuminating the past as a series of lessons for the future. 45
entries covering such issues as the Alien and Sedition Acts,
asylees, immigration and customs enforcement, immigration and
religion, and U.S.-Mexico border relations Contributions from an
international collaborative of 24 scholars from the social and
human sciences Photographs A timeline Entry-specific bibliographies
and a lengthy general bibliography

cross-cultural conceptions of miracles that cut across
denominational lines. Multidisciplinary in approach, this
informative yet entertaining encyclopedia covers major aspects of
miraculous phenomena through more than 150 alphabetically arranged
entries that document how humanity's belief in religious miracles
over multiple places, periods, and faiths have affected
society-even changed the course of history. Written for high school
students and general readers, the coverage enables readers to learn
about different civilizations and cultures, the controversies
surrounding different beliefs, and the often uncomfortable
engagement of religion with science. This single-volume book
provides a one-stop ready-reference that addresses a broad variety
of subject matter on miraculous phenomena and guides further
investigations into the subject. Helpful illustrations and lucid
explanations of the ancillary concepts associated with miraculous
phenomena make learning about this topic more engaging. Readers
will be able to link the doctrinal concepts, such as "grace" or
"prayer," with the descriptions of miraculous events, especially
those associated with saints or holy objects. The examination of
the controversial aspects of different belief systems along with
the book's balanced coverage of the interpretation of miracles will
encourage students to weigh different explanations, thus fostering
the development of their critical thinking skills. Provides the
