Part 1, "The Ego" is one of Paul Brunton's greatest and most unique
gifts to the literature of realisation - a truly earth-shaking
piece of work for serious spiritual seekers. With no holds barred,
it exposes, at an existential level, the most fundamental problems
that obstruct achieving a life of unfailing self-integrity. Part 2,
"From Birth to Rebirth", shows the role of death in the ongoing
cycle of life, clarifies beliefs about reincarnation, and explores
the creative relationships between fate, destiny, and free will.

Part 2 of the fourth volume of Paul Brunton's Notebooks series.
'The Body' is a practical course in reducing the physical obstacles
that retard progress in meditation and obstruct the unfolding of
spiritual intuition and/or stabilising higher awareness.
Part 1, "Practices for the Quest", explores and explains the
importance of fundamental practices in character development and
self-discipline without which stable progress on the spiritual
quest is simply not possible. Part 2, "Relax and Retreat", presents
effective methods for mastering tension, cultivating focused
calmness, and balancing periods of extroverted activity with
periods of introverted creative stillness.
Part 1, "The Religious Urge", carefully distinguishes the heart's
ineradicable religious instinct from cultural trappings and
conventional religious forms. It also evaluates services and
dis-services of institutional religion and points to ways in which
the current spiritual impulse is likely to unfold. Part 2, "The
Reverential Life", gives an individualised, practical approach to
honest communion with the sacred through intelligent devotion,
reverence, prayer, and mature humility. It features a section on
what Grace is, and how it can open us to the sacredness of each
moment of life.
Part 1, "Human Experience" explores the spiritual lessons implicit
in daily living, the need for educational reforms, the causes and
purposes of personal suffering, special problems and opportunities
of youth and age, problems of marriage and relationship, and how to
convert contemporary crises into opportunities for dramatic
spiritual growth. Part 2, "The Arts in Culture", reverently
explores the role of the Beautiful in human culture, with sections
on inspired art, creativity, genius, and the relationship of art
and spiritual life.
Part 1, "Advanced Contemplation" offers a direct route to the
deepest mystical states - yielding permanent results of a
metaphysical, transpersonal, and universal nature. It introduces
Short Path (sudden) practices (such as Zen, Krishnamurti, etc),
develops them, explains why they are so often insufficient, and
shows when, how, and in what spirit to use them effectively. Part
2, "The Peace within You", offers an uplifting and invigorating
approach to 'the peace which passeth understanding' at the core of
every human being, showing how its rich serenity can be consciously
integrated into daily living.
This is a sympathetic and often fascinating view of contemporary
and traditional customs, arts, architecture, philosophies, and
spiritual leaders of the Orient. Often reading like a colourful
travelogue, it has sections on India, China, Angkor Wat, Ceylon,
Japan, Egypt, Tibet, and other Himalayan countries. The book
emphasises that East and West can (and must) learn from and teach
one another as we stumble toward global community. It includes
notes on great teachers and schools of thought.
This volume offers a strong treatment of what enlightenment is and
is not, and of the principles that underlie its arisal. Examining
claims of "union with God", it addresses forcefully the fallacy of
equating even the highest degree of individual human illumination
with the universal intelligence in which individual realisation is
rooted. Paul Brunton carefully distinguishes stages of
enlightenment in the spiritual hierarchy of mystics, saints,
messengers, prophets, sages, and avatars.
One of Paul Brunton's truly significant contributions, this volume
offers a mature spiritual perspective on the importance of
character development, personality refinement, and proper use of
the thinking faculty. Part 1, "Emotions and Ethics" explores two
fundamental relationships. The first is that between character
development and spiritual progress; the second is that between
personality refinement and spiritual self-expression. Part 2, "The
Intellect" explains the important role, and the limitations, of the
thinking faculty as a transformative potency in spiritual practice.
This is the place to start reading Paul Brunton's posthumously
published "Notebooks" series. A representative survey of all the
topics addressed in the notebooks, it touches upon virtually every
conceivable aspect of the spiritual quest. Each of its 28 chapters
is devoted to one of the 28 "categories" into which Paul Brunton
filed his writings. Topics included are meditation, the body,
emotions and ethics, the intellect, the ego, world crisis, the arts
in culture, psychic experiences, philosophy, the Overself,
cosmology, the Absolute, and much more.
Paul Brunton gives voice to the profound teachings of immediate
spiritual awakening that have the power to short circuit the seeker
in us and reveal the true nature of reality here and now.
Adyashanti People who enjoy Eckhart Tolle (The Power of Now, A New
Earth), Michael A. Singer (The Untethered Soul), or Adyashanti
(Emptiness Dancing) will enjoy and benefit greatly from The Short
Path to Enlightenment. These accessible teachings distill the
essence of Advaita Vedanta, Zen, Sufism, Dzogchen Brunton calls
them Short Path teachings. A simple recognition, a brief moment of
grace, can make what seemed like a far-off spiritual goal actual
here and now. But we need reliable pointers for how and where to
look. This compilation of gems distills the essence and effective
practices of this path in direct, jargon-free language useful to
followers of any or no particular tradition. The true gift of this
wonderful book, says Adyashanti, is in how nuanced and subtle Paul
Brunton understood these profound and transformational teachings
and how directly he conveys them. Read this book as you would a
scripture or a sutra and let it open your eyes to eternity.
Includes: How to move from the Long Path of spiritual disciplines
to the Short Path of direct insight Short Path exercises

nature of lasting enlightenment"

This book offers an inward journey of initiation into the first
great secret of spiritual awakening: our home is not the body, but
the soul. The book presents the reader with a uniquely focused
exploration of ancient and modern Egypt; Paul Brunton goes in
search of the secret hinted at by the mysterious Sphinx and
deepened by his visions during his night in the Great Pyramid - the
secret means by which humankind can realise its spiritual destiny.
The author introduces us to the faith-based power of a real
snake-charmer (and becomes one himself!); he encounters a working
magician, a renowned fakir (Tahra Bey - Houdini's main competitor),
and even his own former self, now a ghostly presence amongst the
ruins of Karnak. If this book was only meant to display occult
phenomena for our entertainment, it would do that job admirably,
for it is a compelling account of many extraordinary, and somehow
believable experiences. But what sets this book apart is not its
occultism, nor is it the author's command of Egyptology, Asian
history, nor his openness to Islam. It is the thread that runs
through all these adventures that makes this book an essential part
of every seeker's library, and that thread is symbolised by the
mysteries of the Sphinx, the King's Chamber, and the myth of
Osiris.Paul Brunton applies all his erudition and insight towards
unlocking their deepest meanings; as he does so the purpose and
value of each encounter with a Dervish chief or a temple bas-relief
contributes to the successful unlocking of these age-old puzzles.
If you haven't read this book before, you should! and if you have
read it, read it again! It is a book of many secrets, and hides its
greatest one in plain sight: it is here that Paul Brunton unveils
the importance, method and consequences of properly seating the
body in the mind. Once assimilated, the doors of occult perception
are opened, and they open directly into the truly magical kingdom
of the Soul itself. This new specially illustrated edition is
designed to let you see for yourself all that the author saw on his
own journey. There are maps to guide you through Karnak, Luxor, and
Cairo; there are author's own photographs which document his
adventures, including his deadly work with the village
snake-charmer (who ultimately lost his life to a venomous cobra);
and of course there are wonderful, inspiring images of the magical
power and vivid mysteries which abound in the Egyptian landscape!
