Tell the story of Wales over the last 1000 years, as you discover how Welsh history, cynefin, culture and language are connected, from the past to the present. Underpinned by the four purposes of the new Curriculum for Wales, this book empowers pupils with the knowledge and skills that they need for learning, life and work. > Design a curriculum that is unique to your school. Use the content flexibly to craft a historical education that reflects your pupils and your local area, as well as covering 'What matters' statements within the Humanities AoLE. > Follow an enquiry-based approach. Starting in early medieval times, this book establishes a strong chronological spine, with later enquiries looking at changes in Wales thematically. > Develop analytical and evaluative skills. A wide range of sources and interpretations encourage pupils to think like historians, using evidence to consider change and continuity, cause and consequence. > Put progression at the heart of the curriculum. End-of-topic Activities build towards more in-depth end-of-enquiry Review and Research tasks. All activities and tasks enable each pupil to move through their individual learning journey towards their next 'Progression step'. > Explore the rich history of Wales and the global context. Understanding events and issues in Wales and the wider world - and the development of Wales as a multicultural society - will help pupils to become ethical, informed citizens.

'Engrossing ... grips you and doesn't let go.' The Spectator 'Waterdrinker's gift for savage comedy and his war correspondent's eye have few contemporary equivalents.' The Times A thrilling escapade through the Soviet Union of the '90s and early 2000s by a tour guide turned smuggler turned novelist, that tells the unputdownable story of modern Russia. One day, in 1988, a priest knocks on Pieter Waterdrinker's door with an unusual request: will he smuggle seven thousand bibles into the Soviet Union? Pieter agrees, and soon finds himself living in the midst of one of the biggest social and cultural revolutions of our time, working as a tour operator ... with a sideline in contraband. During the next thirty years, he witnesses, and is sometimes part of, the seismic changes that transform Russia into the modern state we know it as today. This riveting blend of memoir and history provides startling insight into the emergence of one of the world's most powerful and dangerous countries, as well as telling a nail-biting, laugh-out-loud adventure story that will leave you on the edge of your seat.
8 February 2015 marked the 200th anniversary of the birth of Thomas Erskine May. May is the most famous of the fifty holders of the office of Clerk of the House of Commons. His continued renown arises from his Treatise upon the Law, Privileges, Proceedings and Usage of Parliament, first published in 1844 and with its 25th edition currently in preparation. It is known throughout those parts of the world that model their constitutional arrangements on Westminster as the 'Bible of Parliamentary Procedure'. This volume celebrates both the man and his book. Bringing together current and former Clerks in the House of Commons and outside experts, the contributors analyse May's profound contribution to the shaping of the modern House of Commons, as it made the transition from the pre-Reform Act House to the modern core of the UK's constitutional democracy in his lifetime. This is perhaps best symbolised by its enforced transition between 1834 and 1851 from a mediaeval slum to the World Heritage Palace of Westminster, which is the most iconic building in the UK. The book also considers the wider context of parliamentary law and procedure, both before and after May's time. It constitutes the first sustained analysis of the development of parliamentary procedure in over half a century, attempting to situate the reforms in the way the central institution of our democracy conducts itself in the political contexts which drove those changes.
On a snowy Christmas Eve, a young man named Thomas on his way home for a family celebration realizes that the candle in his lantern is about to expire. He stops in a chandler's shop filled with fantastic wax creations, but instead of admiring them Thomas scorns the chandler for wasting his time on sculptures that will only melt. The mysterious old chandler sells him a special Christmas candle. Back on the bitterly cold street, the young man is accosted by an old beggar woman. When he lifts his lantern to get a better look, the candlelight reveals that she is his mother. He gives her his cloak and only then sees the truth: She is not his mother after all, but a stranger. The candle tricks him again before he reaches home, cold and penniless, but richer for his newfound realization that we are all part of one family. This intriguing original fable about charity is accompanied by lavish, mood-filled oil paintings by artist Jacob Collins. Together, author and artist have created an exquisite holiday gift book that will be treasured by the entire family.
