manuscrit, complet et precis. Le chapitre introductif presente les
proprietes physico-chimique de la Galaxie ainsi que sa structure.
Le chapitre 2 est consacre a une compilation de donnees
d'abondances de pres d'un millier d'etoiles. Sur la base d'un
echantillon plus fiable, une nouvelle classification de ces etoiles
en terme cinematique est proposee. Ce travail represente une
avancee significative sur notre connaissance de la Galaxie
(relations age-metallicite, gradients d'abondances, etc.). Dans le
chapitre 3, il explique l'amelioration apporte a un outil de mesure
automatique d'abondance des elements des atmospheres stellaires. Le
jury souligne l'interet evident de ce nouvel outil d'analyse, dont
illustration est faite dans le chapitre 4. Il a ete unanimement
reconnu que le travail de P.Girard, original et relativement
exhaustif, a permis des percees significatives concernant les
