Bis zum Beginn des Weltkrieges befasste sich die wissenschaftliche Arbeit in England auf dem Gebiet der Entwicklung der Verbrennungs motoren, mit Forschungen und Versuchen an verhaltnismassig schweren, langsamlaufenden ortfesten Maschinen, einer Maschinenart, die, wie man heute erkennt, nur beschrankte Aussichten hat, weil sie fur wirk lich grosse Leistungen kaum mit der neuzeitlichen Dampfturbine in Wettbewerb treten kann, wahrend im Bereich geringerer Leistungen ihr Arbeitsfeld taglich durch die fortschreitende Ausbreitung der Elektri zitat .eingeengt wird. Kurze Zeit nach dem Beginn der Feindseligkeiten konnte man aber erkennen, dass die leichte fahrbare Schnellaufer-Verbrennungsmaschine in ihrer Anwendung fur Landverkehr, Luftfahrt und spater fur Schlepper dazu bestimmt war, eine sehr wichtige, wenn nicht gar entscheidende Rolle bei der Fuhrung des Krieges zu spielen. Man bemuhte sich daher damals, die gesamte wissenschaftliche Begabung auf die weitere Ent }Vicklung der schnellaufenden Verbrennungsmaschine zu verwenden. Unabhangige Wissenschaftler und Forscher und staatliche Institute, wie das Royal Aircraft Etablishment und das National Physical Laboratory wurden ersucht, ihr Augenmerk auf diese Frage zu richten. Ihren Ar beiten wurde freigebig jede Erleichterung gewahrt; man forderte sie auf, mit den Fabrikanten zusammenzuarbeiten, alle einschlagigen mechanischen und thermodynamischen Fragen sorgfaltig theoretisch zu bearbeiten und Vorschlage zu machen, wie und nach welcher Richtung hin der Gesamtwirkungsgrad der leichten Kraftmaschinen erhalten und verbessert werden konne."
