Bad Year Economics - Cultural Responses to Risk and Uncertainty (Paperback, New Ed): Paul Halstead, John O'Shea Bad Year Economics - Cultural Responses to Risk and Uncertainty (Paperback, New Ed)
Paul Halstead, John O'Shea
R1,296 Discovery Miles 12 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Bad Year Economics explores the role of risk and uncertainty in human economics within an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural framework. Drawing on archaeology, anthropology, and ancient and modern history, the contributors range widely in time and space across hunting, farming and pastoralism, across ancient states, empires, and modern nation states. The aim, however, is a common one: to analyse in each case the structure of variability - particularly with regard to food supply - and review the range of responses offered by individual human communities. These responses commonly exploit various forms of mobility, economic diversification, storage, and exchange to deploy local or temporary abundance as a defence against shortage. Different levels of response are used at different levels of risk. Their success is fundamental to human survival and their adoption has important ramifications throughout cultural behaviour.

Landscape and Land Use in Postglacial Greece (Paperback): Paul Halstead, Charles Frederick Landscape and Land Use in Postglacial Greece (Paperback)
Paul Halstead, Charles Frederick
R4,812 Discovery Miles 48 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Collaboration between prehistorians and palaeoecologists is radically changing our understanding of the relationship between landscape, land use and human settlement in Greece. The chapters in this volume include case studies and broader syntheses, developments of both on-site and off-site field methodology, explorations of palaeoecological and archaeological evidence, and discussions of how the palaeoecological and archaeological records are formed. Contributions range geographically over the contrasting natural and cultural landscapes of northern and southern Greece and the lowlands and highlands, and chronologically over the whole postglacial period, including studies of plant and animal ecology and of palaeoecological formation processes in the present. The difficulty of disentangling climatic and anthropogenic causes of palaeoecological change is a recurrent theme.

Neolithic Society in Greece (Paperback): Paul Halstead Neolithic Society in Greece (Paperback)
Paul Halstead
R3,742 Discovery Miles 37 420 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Understanding of early farming societies in Greece has been revolutionized by major field projects, by the growing application of specialist 'scientific' studies, and by new approaches to interpretation. This volume reviews the most significant recent field research, ranging from regional survey, through large-scale excavation of an extensive open settlement, to the investigation of caves. Contributors critically evaluate or revise current ideas on the nature of these early societies at a range of scales from the individual to the region.>
