Let them speak to me no more of Rome, and let Greece be silent lest she stand accused of knowing nothing but what she has derived from Egypt. Frederik Ludvig Norden (17081742), a Danish naval officer, wrote these words during a 1737 expedition to describe his amazement at the technical ingenuity of ancient Egyptian and Nubian art and architecture. Posthumously published in 1755, Nordens Travels in Egypt and Nubia proved to be of great importance for eighteenth-century discussions of the role of Egypt and Greece in the creation of European identity. This volume, supplemented by more than fifty of Nordens own drawings, is an analysis of the publication and its lasting cultural and intellectual influence.

This volume contains a number of contributions on a wide variety of Demotic subjects including a new version of the Introduction to the Teachings of 'Onch-Sheshonqy, fragments of Demotic word lists, an ancient Demotic name book, Demotic questions to oracles, two letters published for the first time, notes on the Setne Story, collations and corrections to earlier editions of papyri, and the unique account of a Rebellion against the Sun God. CNI Publications is the name of the series published by the Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies at the University of Copenhagen and Museum Tusculanum Press. The volumes in the series are written mainly in English, but also in French and German, and appeal to an international audience primarily within the fields of Assyriology, Near Eastern Archeology and Egyptology. While the publications are principally written by scholars working in the Danish research environment on Middle Eastern antiquity, including scholars from the Papyrus Carlsberg Collection, the Centre for Canon and Identity Formation, and the Old Assyrian Text Project, it also includes contributions by a wide array of distinguished international scholars.

For both ancient Egypt and Iran, as a cultural feature, incestuous relationships are usually dismissed on the grounds that they are only found as the exception, being allowed for royalty as representatives for the divine on earth, or that the evidence for such relationships are unreliable. Neither view, from the perspective of this study, is tenable. This work examines the evidence for marriage and sexual relations between siblings, and between a parent and child, in ancient Egypt and pre-Islamic Iran. The book restricts its examination to incestuous relationships between members of non-royal nuclear families and puts forth arguments against the generally held axiom that the prohibition of incest is a universal phenomenon.
