The GAttinger Hain is generally considered to have been the most
close-knit circle of poets in the Sturm und Drang (Storm and
Stress) period. Its collection of poetry called the ABundesbuchA
(1772/73) has only come down to us in manuscript form. This volume
combines the first complete edition of the poems with a full-scale
study of its significance and an extensive commentary section. The
collection encompasses most of the poetic genres familiar at the
time, and the poems address almost all the significant topics and
currents prevalent in the period of upheaval around 1770. It is the
last major document in the history of 18th century German poetry
that has not yet been accorded the attention it merits.

Very few examples of medieval Arabic drama have survived, a fact
which constitutes a serious loss to our knowledge of Arab literary
history. However, we can form some idea of the kind of work of
which we have been deprived by examining the three shadow plays
preserved for us, those of Ibn Daniyal, the thirteenth century poet
and wit. These three plays display in all their vitality,
directness and even coarseness the kind of entertainment popular in
medieval Egypt. They are literary, social and historical documents,
unique of their kind, presenting a veritable gallery of characters,
high and low, from all sides of Egyptian life. This edition offers
for the first time the complete text, edited over a long period by
a number of scholars and provided with a critical apparatus. The
language used entails great textual problems yet it rewards study,
combining wit, dramatic entertainment and sophisticated poetry.
These shadow plays cannot be ignored in any history of Arabic
literature.
Paul Kahle publishes here a German translation, with critical
notations, of twelve Aramaic Marka hymns, which are an important
piece in the early Samaritan liturgy. Kahle's work supplements
other works that contain the Aramaic texts by providing a modern
translation.
