During the era following the Second World War world peace was largely assured through American-European cooperation on the political, military, and economic level. This status quo was upset by the ratification of the Treaty on the European Union (Maastricht Treaty) which will, whatever obstacles still remain, inevitably lead to closer cooperation among (west)European countries and to a shift in Europe's position within world politics. This raises a number of questions that are discussed in this volume by an international team of experts from Europe (east and west), Russia and the United States.

Volume of new essays investigating Kleist's influences and sources both literary and philosophical, their role as paradigms, and the ways in which he responded to and often shattered them. Heinrich von Kleist (1777-1811) was a rebel who upset canonization by employing his predecessors and contemporaries as what Steven Howe calls "inspirational foils." It was precisely a keen awareness of literary and philosophical traditions that allowed Kleist to shatter prevailing paradigms. Though little is known about what specifically Kleist read, the frequent allusions in his enduringly modern oeuvre indicate fruitful dialogues with both canonical and marginal works of European literature, spanning antiquity (The Old Testament, Sophocles), the Early Modern Period (Shakespeare, De Zayas), the late Enlightenment (Wieland, Goethe, Schiller), and the first eleven years of the nineteenth century (Mereau, Brentano, Collin). Kleist's works also evidence encounters with his philosophical precursors and contemporaries, including the ancient Greeks (Aristotle) and representatives of all phases of Enlightenment thought (Montesquieu, Rousseau, Ferguson, Spalding, Fichte, Kant, Hegel), economic theories (Smith, Kraus), and developments in anthropology, sociology, and law. This volume of new essays sheds light on Kleist's relationship to his literary and philosophical influences and on their function as paradigms to which his writings respond.

Hermann Broch (1886-1951) war als Romancier ein poeta doctus, der sich auch als philosophischer Essayist, Menschenrechtstheoretiker, Massenpsychologe und Literaturkritiker einen Namen gemacht hat. Gleichzeitig beschaftigte er sich mit Kunst, Architektur, Musik und Film. Mit seinem Drehbuch Das Unbekannte X versuchte Broch, ein breites Publikum fur neue wissenschaftliche Themen zu interessieren. Wenn er auch selbst mit den Ideen zur Verfilmung seiner Romane nicht durchdrang, war er doch davon uberzeugt, dass dem Film als Massenmedium die Zukunft gehoere. Brochs letzter Roman, Die Schuldlosen, mit der darin enthaltenen und von Hannah Arendt so hoch geschatzten Erzahlung der Magd Zerline lebt nicht zuletzt von den Anspielungen auf Mozarts Don Giovanni. Es uberrascht nicht, dass einer der bedeutendsten franzoesischen Vertreter der musikalischen Moderne, Jean Barraque, sich ganz der Vertonung von Brochs Exilroman Der Tod des Vergil widmete. In seiner spaten kulturhistorischen Studie Hofmannsthal und seine Zeit lasst Broch noch einmal die Entwicklung der Moderne in den verschiedenen Kunsten Revue passieren, wobei er in der Malerei die Stationen von Paul Cezanne uber Vincent van Gogh bis Pablo Picasso markiert und in der Literatur zwei Richtungen - die asthetische und die ethische - profiliert, die sich mit den Namen Hugo von Hofmannsthal und Karl Kraus verbinden. Kraus' Satire ist in Brochs Augen paradigmatisch fur die Literatur und Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts. Im vorliegenden Band, Ergebnis eines internationalen Broch-Symposiums in Prag, wird das Interesse des Autors an den Kunsten erstmals herausgestellt und ihr vielfaltiger Einfluss auf sein Werk untersucht. Die Beitrage zeigen, wie stark die Kunste gerade in Werken der klassischen modernen Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts im Sinne von Intertextualitat, Ekphrasis und Verflechtung aufeinander gewirkt haben.

Studies of one of the foremost 20c Austrian writers, as a critic and as a novelist and dramatist. The Austrian novelist Hermann Broch ranks with Kafka and Musil among the three greatest 20th-century Austrian novelists and belongs to the century's most gifted novelists in German from whatever country. He established his reputation with The Sleepwalkers, a trilogy of political and philosophical novels. His best-known work is The Death of Virgil, a long, challenging work in a lyrical, exuberant, and sometimes nearly incomprehensible style, akind of cerebral stream-of-consciousness of the dying Virgil. Broch also wrote extensively about modern art and architecture, Hofmannsthal, and mass psychology. He has a special connection to Yale, as he lived the last years of his life there after having escaped Austria in 1938. The participants in the Yale Symposium of April 2001 are among the world's most prominent Broch scholars. Fourteen of their presentations have been extensively revised for this volume, which focuses on Broch as critic and as novelist and dramatist. Topics include Broch's views on kitsch and art, and on drama; his cultural criticism; his cooperation with Borgese and Arendt; his theory of mass psychology; history in his works, Ernst Kretschmer's influence on him; Virgil and Celan's Atemwende; Jean Starr Untermeyer's translation of Virgil; guilt and the fall in Those without Guilt; and Broch reception in Japan. The prominent scholar-contributors to this volume share their experiences developing the field of US German Studies and their thoughts on literature and interdisciplinarity, pluralism and diversity, and transatlantic dialogue. The decisive contribution of the exile generation of the 1930s and '40s to German Studies in the United States is well known. The present volume carries the story forward to the next generation(s), giving voice to scholars from the US and overseas, many of them mentored by the exile generation. The exiles knew vividly the value of the Humanities; the following generations, though spared the experience of historical catastrophe, have found formidable challenges in building and maintaining the field in a time increasingly dismissive of that value. The scholar-contributors to this volume, prominent members of the profession, share their experiences of finding their way in the field and helping to develop it to its present state as well as their thoughts on its present challenges, including the question of the role of literature and of interdisciplinarity, pluralism, and diversity. Eingegangen wird auf die Herauskristallisierung des Europa-Gedankens von der Klassik bis zur Moderne durch neue Herangehensweisen an klassische und romantische Autoren (u.a. Lessing, Goethe, Novalis, Schlegel), die als "Seismographen" der Krise ihrer Zeit und zugleich als Stimmen fur kunftige Visionen gelesen werden. Auf einer ahnlichen Spur der Verbindung von methodologischer Diversitat beim grundlegenden einheitlichen Verstandnis des Erzahlens als anthropologische Eigenschaft bewegen sich die Beitrage der Sektion Vielheit und Einheit des Erzahlens? Moeglichkeiten einer historischen Narratologie (betreut und bearbeitet von Matias Martinez, Magdolna Orosz und Christopher Young). Prasentiert werden verschiedene Positionen der postklassischen historischen Narratologie, die sich in der Folge des cultural turn in den letzten 20 Jahren entfaltet und neue Zugange zu Erzahltexten vom Mittelalter bis in die Moderne ermoeglicht haben. Die Beitrage der Sektion Globalisierung - eine kulturelle Herausforderung fur die Literaturwissenschaft? Germanistische Abgrenzungen (betreut und bearbeitet von Regina Hartmann) gehen in einer Vielzahl von Forschungsansatzen auf die verschiedenen Dimensionen der Globalisierung durch das Prisma des kulturell Globalen ein. Das Spannungsfeld zwischen weltoffener Grenzuberschreitung und nationalistischen Abgrenzungsbestrebungen pragt die Gegenwart und findet vielfaltigen Eingang in die Literatur. Fokussiert werden verschiedene Globalisierungsnarrative: u.a. die literarische Verortung von turkischdeutschen und schweizerdeutschen Autoren, von Autoren mit osteuropaischen Wurzeln, die literarische Gestaltung des Raums (Danzig, Stettin, Berlin), die Probleme der Identitatsbildung in einer entgrenzten Welt.
