All Religion Is Inter-Religion analyses the ways inter-religious
relations have contributed both historically and philosophically to
the constructions of the category of "religion" as a distinct
subject of study. Regarded as contemporary classics, Steven M.
Wasserstrom's Religion after Religion (1999) and Between Muslim and
Jew (1995) provided a theoretical reorientation for the study of
religion away from hierophanies and ultimacy, and toward lived
history and deep pluralism. This book distills and systematizes
this reorientation into nine theses on the study of religion.
Drawing on these theses--and Wasserstrom's opus more generally--a
distinguished group of his colleagues and former students
demonstrate that religions can, and must, be understood through
encounters in real time and space, through the complex relations
they create and maintain between people, and between people and
their pasts. The book also features an afterword by Wasserstrom
himself, which poses nine riddles to students of religion based on
his personal experiences working on religion at the turn of the
twenty-first century.
In the early postwar era, Britain enjoyed a very close relationship with Australia and New Zealand, through their common membership of the Sterling Area and the Commonwealth Preference Area. This book examines the breakdown of this relationship in the 1950s and 60s, and the various economic factors involved. Special emphasis is given to the implications for Australia and New Zealand of Britain's proposal for a European free trade area, and of Harold Macmillan's unsuccessful bid to join the EEC in 1961-3.
Power of the Land is the first in-depth look at the past 120 years
of struggle over the Oglala Lakota land base on Pine Ridge Indian
Reservation in South Dakota.
This book is the first in-depth look at the past 120 years of struggle over the Oglala Lakota land base on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. An unholy alliance between the federal government and regional economic interests has led to progressive disenfranchisement of the majority of the Oglala people, and to the development of an ethnically distinct class of Oglala who control the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation land base. The small group of so-called "mixed-blood" Oglala has come to control the grazing land on the reservation, and to exercise a disproportionate control of the Oglala Sioux Tribal Government. Conflicts growing out of that situation are central to understanding of the reservation situation.
Thoroughly updated to reflect today's recent advances in adult and
pediatric endocrinology, DeGroot's Endocrinology, 8th Edition,
remains the comprehensive, international reference of choice for
today's endocrinologists and fellows. A full peer review of the
previous edition, conducted by a largely new group of renowned
editors, was used to update this trusted, two-volume resource.
In-depth coverage of both basic and clinical aspects of
endocrinology and up-to-date information on the treatment and
management of endocrine disorders are provided by a diverse group
of expert contributors from six continents. A full-color format and
helpful algorithms summarize clinical decision-making and practical
approaches to patient management. Organizes content by all the
glands that regulate the endocrine system while integrating basic
science and clinical presentations of disease. Includes new
chapters: Anatomy and Physiology of the Hypothalmus and Pituitary,
Differentiated Thyroid Cancer, Medullary Thyroid Cancer, Drugs that
Affect Thyroid Function, Genetic Disorders of the Adrenal Cortex,
Adrenal Pathology, Primary Aldosteronism, Transgender Healthcare,
Erectile Dysfunction, Prevalence and Causes of Male Infertility,
Sexual Dysfunction in the Female, Glucose Toxicity and Oxidative
Stress. Emphasizes basic science and evidence-based practice
throughout. Features extensive updates to content on thyroid and
adrenal disfunction, endocrine-disrupting chemicals and human
disease, clinical management of diabetes, and advances in genetics.
Includes algorithms to outline effective treatment protocols.
Contains new emphasis boxes that highlight key points in each
chapter. Enhanced eBook version included with purchase. Your
enhanced eBook allows you to access all of the text, figures, and
references from the book on a variety of devices.
In 2008 Paul Robertson, the renowned violinist and leader of the
Medici Quartet, suffered a ruptured aorta. After dying for a
lengthy period on the operating table, he remained in a coma for
many weeks. During this time, he experienced visions which afforded
him profound insights and when he awoke, he found his understanding
of the world fundamentally altered. This surprising and rewarding
memoir offers a fascinating perspective on creative endeavour: the
rigours of learning, the challenges of performance and the
spiritual nourishment that drives us on. It is a poignant and wise
book that draws on a lifetime of experiences, in both life and
death.

The 18 revised full papers presented in this book together with an introductory survey were carefully reviewed and constitute the documentation of the Second International Workshop on Self-adaptive Software, IWSAS 2001, held in Balatonfüred, Hungary in May 2001. Self-adaptive software evaluates its own behavior and changes it when the evaluation indicates that the software does not accomplish what it is intended to do or when better functionality or better performance is possible. The self-adaptive approach in software engineering builds on well known dynamic features familiar to Lisp or Java programmes and aims at improving the robustness of software systems by gradually adding new features of self-adaption or autonomy.
In the early postwar era, Britain enjoyed a very close economic
relationship with Australia and New Zealand through their common
membership of the Sterling Area and the Commonwealth Preference
Area. This book examines the breakdown of this relationship in the
1950 and 1960s. Britain and Australasia were driven apart by
disputes over industrial protection, agriculture, capital supplies,
and relations with other countries. Special emphasis is given to
the implications for Australia and New Zealand of Britain's growing
interest in European integration.
Self-adaptive software evaluates its own behavior and changes its behavior when the evaluation indicates that the software does not accomplish what it is intended to do or when better functionality or better performance is possible. The self-adaptive approach in software engineering builds on well-known features like the use of errors and the handling of exceptions in languages like Lisp or Java and aims at improving the robustness of software systems by gradually adding new features of self-adaption and autonomity. This book originates from the First International Workshop on Self-Adaptive Software, IWSAS 2000, held in Oxford, UK in April 2000. The revised full papers presented in the volume together with an introductory survey by the volume editors assess the state of the art in this emerging new field and set the scene for future research and development work.
The Erewash Valley line, linking the busy railway junctions at
Trent through the once bustling yards of the iconic railway
location of Toton and to the main line at Clay Cross, has seen much
in the way of change over the last half a century. Infrastructure,
traffic types, wagon and locomotive classes have all seen a mixture
of rationalisation, overhaul, replacement, withdrawal and
investment. This changing scene has provided enthusiasts and
photographers with outstanding variety and opportunities to record
the changing times, and while the amount of traffic lost can be
lamented, the modern-day photographer can still find good variety.
With 180 previously unpublished photographs, this book provides a
snapshot of diesels working over the route through this period of
change, from the corporate British Rail era to the early years of
privatisation and up to the present day.

This book will be of special interest to English teachers and those
in professional development in the region and/or who have
classrooms with Asian learners. Paradigms appear to be shifting in
Asian L2 learning in a region providing huge growth in English
education. This will have an important bearing on the profession,
including researchers, worldwide
Toton first saw railway yards built on the site in the 1850s to
support the growing need to transport coal from the collieries of
the Erewash Valley and, later, the Leen Valley area to towns and
industry. Later, growth in wagonload traffic saw British Rail
invest heavily in the yards, including mechanised hump shunting
equipment and a modern diesel locomotive facility. However,
wagonload traffic was soon to decline, and the transport of coal
was revolutionised by the merry-go-round concept utilising new HAA
wagons, sweeping away the numerous older vacuum-braked types. Toton
was once the heart of coal on the railway, but the decline in use
of fossil fuels in the UK has decimated the coal train from the
national network, with Toton yards now partly abandoned and the
remainder in use mostly as a base for engineering trains and
traincrew relieving point. This book illustrates the changing scene
at Toton from the last days of British Rail, through privatisation,
up to the present day.
