Book by Paul Romhany The Briefcase Illusion has been the opening for Paul Romhany's World Class Act for the past twenty years An illusion that is designed to set up in less than five minutes, and pack flat in less than two The possibilities are endless Use it as an appearance or vanish. Basic Performance: The MC walks on stage with a briefcase, no magician, just the case. He then places it on top of a writing desk. The lid of the case opens and the magicians makes his appearance out of the briefcase. Basic Vanish: The magician places the case on top of the writing desk, and a girl is pushed inside. The magician then picks up the case and walks off stage. Variations: Use this for other productions with or without the briefcase. In Romhany's routine the briefcase lid opens up and an eight foot ladder appears from it, then Romhany makes his appearance out of the briefcase as though he is climbing up the ladder. At FISM it was used to vanish TWO people. The briefcase was placed on the floor in front of the writing desk and a girl was pushed down inside. The magician then picked up the case and placed it on the table and another assistant was put inside the case. The case was then picked up and the magician walked off stage. Puppetry: This was also used for a puppeteer who was concealed inside the writing desk and able to operate a puppet while the performer interacted with the puppet. The magician shows hanging from a stand is a gift box, wrapped with ribbon. He talks about coincidences, asking if anybody in the audience has experienced any lately. He mentions the gift is for his niece's birthday, and he will present it to her next time he sees her, but for now wants to try and experiment. He throws out a beach ball in to the audience and has somebody catch it, and call out any color. He asks what color they would like, let's say BLUE, and he says that is a coincidence because that is his niece's favorite color. The all is thrown again and another person catches it. This time he asks another person to call out any number between 5 and 100 - let's say they call out $25. he says what a coincidence because that's exatly how much he spent on his nieces' gift. One more time the ball is thrown until a lady catches it. Asking her name, the magician says, what a coincidence, that is my niece's name. The lady is invited on stage and asked to look at a long selection of gifts he could have bought for his niece. The lady chooses one, which the magician replies is a coincidence because that's what he bought. To prove that these were really coincidences the gift box is lowered, open up and inside is the matching color gift (a blue teddy bear) with a price tag of the same amount called out AND a birthday card addressed to his niece with the same name as the spectator. Included in this book are several bonus routines which Paul performs in his act using Teddy Bears. These have been taken from his shows on cruise ships, corporate entertainment and private house parties.

The idea of predicting raffle ticket numbers, chosen at random by audience members, can be found in 13 Steps to Mentalism. However, the original method required an offstage assistant. For the past twenty years, Paul has been developing and performing his version of this amazing effect, without the need for an offstage assistant. This one person routine is easy to perform, and like all of Paul's work, is taken from real-world working situations. The method is highly practical, and so easy to perform, you can put this to your act straight away. Paul explains THREE different versions of this routine that he has been performing on cruise ships, private functions and trade shows. Effect One: A prediction is handed out to an audience member at the beginning of the show. At anytime during the performance, a bowl of two hundred tickets are handed out, with three spectators each choosing their own ticket. The prediction is then read out, and the winning numbers match the ticket numbers chosen by the spectators. Effect Two: A prediction with three raffle tickets inside is given to an audience member to hold. A bowl of raffle tickets is handed out and three different audience members each take one ticket. The three prediction tickets match the numbers of the three random tickets chosen by the spectators. Effect Three: A large envelope is hanging on stage. A bowl or raffle tickets is passed through the audience, with five people each taking out, and looking at the numbers on their tickets. The envelope is opened by an audience member and a large piece of paper with raffle ticket numbers is read out, they match the ticket numbers chosen by the five spectators.
