The Science of Sound is widely recognized as the leading textbook in the field. It provides an excellent introduction to acoustics for students without college physics or a strong background in mathematics. In the Third Edition, Richard Moore and Paul Wheeler join Tom Rossing in updating The Science of Sound to include a wide range of important technological developments in the field of acoustics. New exercises and review questions have been added to the end of each chapter to help students study the material.
The primary goal of this text is a practical one. Equipping students with the enough knowledge and creating an independent research platform, the author strives to prepare students for professional careers. Providing students with a marketable skill set requires topics from many areas of optimization. The initial goal of this text is to develop marketable skill set for mathematics majors but also for students of engineering, computer science, economics, statistics, and business. Optimization reaches into many different fields. This text provides a balance where one is needed. Mathematics optimization books are often too heavy on theory without enough applications; texts aimed at business students are often strong on applications, but weak on math. The book represents an attempt at overcoming this imbalance for all students taking such a course. The book contains many applications but also explains the mathematics behind the techniques. There are even definitions and theorems. Optimization techniques are at the heart of the first spam filters, are used in self-driving cars, play a great role in machine learning and can be used in such places as determining a batting order in a Major League Baseball game. Additionally, it has seemingly limitless other applications in business and industry. In short, knowledge of this subject offers an individual both a very marketable skill set for a wealth of jobs as well as useful tools for research in many academic disciplines. Many of the problems rely on using a computer. Microsoftâs Excelis most often used as this is common in business, but Python and other languages are considered. The reason for this is to experience mathematics and engineering students using MatLab or Mathematica, the economics and business majors using Excel, and the computer science students writing their own programs in Java or Python.
High end digital cinematography can truly challenge the film camera in many of the technical, artistic and emotional aspects of what we think of as 'cinematography'. This book is a guide for practising and aspiring cinematographers and DOPs to digital cinematography essentials - from how to use the cameras to the rapidly emerging world of High Definition cinematography and 24p technology. This book covers the `on-the-set' knowledge you need to know - its emphasis lies in practical application, rather than descriptions of technologies, so that in this book you will find usable `tools' and information to help you get the job done. From `getting the look' to lighting styles and ratios, what is needed for different types of shoots and the technical preparation required, this is a complete reference to the knowledge and skills required to shoot high end digital films. The book also features a guide to the Sony DVW in-camera menus - showing how to set them up and how they work - a device to save you time and frustration on set. Paul Wheeler is a renowned cinematographer/director of photography and trainer, he runs courses on Digital Cinematography at the National Film & Television School and has lectured on the Royal College of Art's MA course and at The London International Film School. He has been twice nominated by BAFTA for a Best Cinematography award and also twice been the winner of the INDIE award for Best Digital Cinematography.

Filmmaking is an art, but, like so many art forms, there are basic underlying tools and techniques and a body theoretical knowledge that must be understood and mastered before artistic expression can flourish. This book is an invaluable resource for all aspiring DoPs. Practical Cinematography can be dipped into for quick reference - perhaps to answer a specific question or deal with practical problems relating to a shoot - or read from cover to cover. It discusses the principles of cinematography and the expertise which is unique to the Director of Photography (DoP). It deals with all the basic theory such as color temperature and sensitometry, and all the practical things a DoP needs to know, from the make-up of the crew to how to prepare an equipment list.

Devon, England 1805. James Morgan, a 10 year old orphan runs away from a brutal life slaving on a farm. After narrowly escaping the hangman's rope from an incident in a coastal town, he stows away in an American cargo ship heading for Charleston South Carolina. He is soon found but is treated well by the elderly captain who becomes his guardian when he retires from the sea after they disembark. They live for seven years near the Mississippi river where James completes his education and develops a precocious gift of using the English language. When he reaches seventeen years of age, his guardian dies and he moves down river to New Orleans and finds work in a gambling saloon. He meets Harry Parfitt, the disowned son of a millionaire father at the moment he is facing death after having been accused of cheating. Using his skill with words, James persuades the other card players to put away their daggers. From that day, Parfitt refers to James as 'Gentle' Morgan. They have several adventures in the dangerous Swamp area of New Orleans before war breaks out with Great Britain and they have many more when they go to sea to fight the enemy. They are eventually captured and taken to Dartmoor, a notorious prison in England. An American prisoner already there is a massively built black slave called Richard Crafus who has been bribed by the prison governor to report anyone planning to riot or escape, for which the penalty is death. Parfitt and James suffer considerable hardship but make friends with a French prisoner from the Napoleonic wars in Europe and develop an extraordinary plan to break out that relies on taking Crafus with them. Although the escape is successful and they become friends with the huge man who helped them capture a ship, more trouble awaits when they return to America and Crafus is convicted as a runaway slave and arrested to return to the plantation .
In the early nineteen eighties, Charles Revill was one of four young graduates who become multi millionaires when they joined a New York investment bank at the time computers were being installed to accelerate the growth and value of world wide bond markets. Fifteen years later, one of them is shot dead in a London street and another found hanged in a Rome hotel. With a failed marriage behind him and little else to do but sit alone in his Vermont country mansion, Revill decides to find the reason for their murders and sets out on a perilous journey that takes him to America, England, Italy and Azerbaijan. As he draws closer to the truth he realises he is not only risking his own life but those of his family when he discovers he has entered the underworld of organised crime that is planning to empty all the banks of the developed world.
This book is both a timely and challenging exploration of providing personal care for people with learning disabilities, an area of care provision that tends to be neglected in comparison with high profile areas of care management today. Well researched and presented, there is comprehensive coverage of all main aspects of providing intimate and personal care, ranging from the wider context (culturally sensitive provision, sexuality, health and hygiene, and law) to more specific practice areas (multi-disciplinary working, teaching independent living skills, people with profound/multiple disabilities, children and young people and older adults).' - Professional Social Work 'Intimate and Personal Care with People with learning Disabilities edited by Steven Carnaby and Paul Cambridge (Jessica Kingsley Publishers, GBP19.99) is an academic book but it is fascinating and written to inform and change practice. Giving intimate care is possibly the most difficult and complex area of care work, yet it is rarely analysed and understood in this sort of depth. We tend to write rather pompous and detached policies about dignity and privacy and they don't actually help staff to discuss and think through the realities that they face when helping clients with the most intimate situations. Care plans may generalise and skate over the details, leaving residents and staff to do their best in situations that are personally and professionally challenging. This is a book for managers (of care homes of all kinds) who want to develop their team's capacity to think and to understand, and thereby to provide the very best care.' - Caring Times 'Probably the first substantial discussion of and guide to this essential area of care practice. A wideranging volume which deserves to be read and kept as a reference volume by all professional teams providing intimate care.' - Current Awareness Service This important guide is the first to consider the management and practice of intimate and personal care for people with learning disabilities. It examines in detail aspects of care such as training, ethnicity, sexuality and competence in practice, drawing on the extensive practical experience of the contributors. They discuss important issues including the nature of touch, how physical contact is intended and experienced, carers' duty of care, and risk management. Against the backdrop of a recent government strategy for people with learning disabilities, the book will also explore management considerations of best value, care standards, performance monitoring and inspection. Providing academic, professional and learning outcomes from research, this book will be an invaluable guide to managers, policy makers, carers, academics and students in the field of social care and learning disability.
