Over the past century, universities have assumed an important role in the political and cultural emancipation of women, minorities, and the lower socioeconomic classes. This expansion in educational institutions was not an isolated event in the years after the World War II, but rather a phase in a longer, secular process of modernization which started in the late nineteenth century and continues up to the present day.Expansion and Structural Change explores this development, focusing on the social background of students and the institutional transformation of higher education in several countries. Who have been the beneficiaries of this remarkable process of educational expansion? Has it made Western society more open, mobile, and democratic? These questions are analyzed from a historical perspective which takes into account the institutional change of universities during this century.Based on archival data for the United States, Germany, Japan, France, and Italy, this study combines both comparative and historical perspectives. It documents the political struggle of different social groups for access to univeristies, as well as the meritocratic selection for higher status positions. This work will be an indispensable reference for anyone searching for a comparative and historical analysis of higher education in the most advanced countries.

Die meisten Sammelbande haben eine langere Vorgeschichte, und dies gilt auch fur diesen Band. Den AnstoB gaben die Herausgeber der Kolner Zeitschrift flir Soziologie und Sozialpsychologie im Mai 2002 mit dem Vorschlag, ein Sonderheft liber die ge- genwartig zu beobachtende Transformation okonomischer und sozialer Institutionen in Deutschland herauszugeben. Ich habe diesen Vorschlag gerne akzeptiert. Das Thema wurde auf einen spezifi- schen Aspekt des sozialen und okonomischen Wandels fokussiert. Es geht in diesem Band urn die Frage, in welcher Weise das "Modell Deutschland" sich an ein neues Pro- duktionsregime anpasst, das hier als Finanzmarkt-Kapitalismus bezeichnet wird. Der Ti- tel dient als Chiffre fur einen Transformationsprozess, in dem globale Finanzmarkte einen erheblichen Einfluss auf die Veranderungsrichtung und auf die Veranderungsge- schwindigkeit einer Gesellschaft ausliben. In vielen Unternehmen sind Investment- und Pensionsfonds die "neuen" Eigentlimer, die haufig liber die Mehrheit des Aktienkapi- tals verfugen. Der "Fall Mannesmann" (2000) hat gezeigt, dass nicht die Manager, son- dern die neuen Eigentlimer bestimmen, was mit einem Unternehmen und mit der Be- legschaft geschieht. 1m Marz 2004 fand eine Konferenz in der Evangelischen Akademie in Bad Herren- alb statt. Auf dieser Konferenz haben die Autorinnen und Autoren ihre Beitrage vorge- stellt und diskutiert. Die Konferenz hatte ohne die Unterstlitzung der Fritz Thyssen Stiftung (Koln) nicht stattfinden konnen. Die Thyssen Stiftung hat auch die abschlie- Bende Edition dieses Bandes unterstlitzt.
