The scope of detector materials for semiconductors and
scintillators includes a wide variety of molecular compounds such
as cadmium zinc telluride (CZT), lanthanum halides, and others. An
additional class of scintillators is based on organic compounds and
glasses. Ideally, attributes of materials used for radiation
detection include appropriate-range bandgaps, high atomic numbers
of the central element, high densities, performance at room
temperature, strong mechanical properties, and low production cost.
Unfortunately, there are significant gaps in the knowledge required
to produce radiation detection materials of higher quality - in
terms of reproducible purity, homogeneity and mechanical integrity.
This book explores the latest results in radiation detection
materials from both experimental and theoretical standpoints, as
both are needed to grow and characterize materials that will
produce better detectors in the future.
A fascinating history of an ancient place, now utterly transformed
by progress and modernity, a place unrecognisable even to those who
lived there in the 1950s. From the first mention of Tallaght in
legend in the Book of Invasions, through early Christian monastic
settlements, castles and grand residences, Fenian raids and the
Battle of Tallaght, car and motorcycle racing and an aerodrome, the
rise and fall of a chocolate factory and a pioneering
telecommunications firm, Albert Perris tells the often-surprising
story of Tallaght. The once-tiny village in Dublin’s foothills
changed utterly towards the end of the twentieth century, with a
massive population explosion and huge modernisation. This
accessible, entertaining and occasionally humorous book is
beautifully presented with carefully selected and arranged images,
photographs and original illustrations by the acclaimed illustrator
Michael O’Brien.

Preserving your own food is a fundamental part of a healthy
lifestyle. Not only do you source produce from your garden,
farmer's market, or local shop, you can also ensure the preparation
is wholesome and the ingredients are pure. In this detailed guide,
1950s icon Irma Harding offers her firm guidance on how to properly
prepare and preserve your own foods. The book explains how to
preserve foods by canning, pickling, freezing, smoking and curing
fresh vegetables and meats. Step-by-step techniques and tasty
recipes from food artisans in Austin, Texas, Wisconsin, Michigan
and other places are included. Along the way, Irma Harding provides
her no-nonsense advice and some colorful images and a brief history
of her checkered red cloth past. This colorful book delivers both
the techniques and recipes necessary to keep their food local and
fresh and the life path direct and true.
The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), an agency of the Department of
Defense (DOD), supplies more than 8,000 different items ranging
from uniforms and body armour to tents and canteens. Military
uniforms are procured through competitive contracts. This book
provides an overview of military uniform assessment and
procurement.
Historical observations of abolition have ranged from
perspectives of contempt to acclamation, and now show signs of a
major change in interpretation. The literature often has been
dominated by hostile appraisals of William Lloyd Garrison and other
abolitionist leaders until the 1960s, when historians equated
abolitionism may have fluctuated from one period to the next, most
of this scholarship shared certain assumptions--that abolitionists
provided pivotal factors toward the onset of the Civil War, that
their internal disputes were intensely interesting, and that
somehow they were emblematic of other generations of radicals in
the American experience.
Today the scope of antislavery scholarship was widened to
examine abolition in light of the social, economic, and political
climate of nineteenth-century society and culture. Thus volume of
fourteen new and original essays comprises the first survey of
current directions in abolitionist writings and represents an
advanced perspective in contemporary American historical research.
The contributors include such well-known scholars on abolitionism
as BertramWyatt-Brown, Leonard Richards, James Brewer Stewart, and
William Wiecek.
The authors examine various dimensions of abolitionism from its
religious context to its international effect, from its attitude
toward the northern poor to its impact on feminism, and from wars
of words waged with southern intellectuals to the bloodier
conflicts begun in Kansas. These essays, rather than expounding a
single revisionist attitude, include every major approach to
antislavery -- women's history, quantitative history, comparative
history, legal history, black history, psychohistory, social
history. Antislavery Reconsidered allows both specialists and
laymen a chance to survey recent scholastic trends in this area and
provides for them the assumptions, methods, and conclusions of the
best current literature on antislavery.
