Traditional studies of the property market have tended to focus solely on commercial and legal issues, but the growing importance of the issue of sustainability means that a different approach is needed. Since the Renaissance, at least, the medium of sculpture has been associated explicitly with the sense of touch. Sculptors, philosophers and art historians have all linked the two, often in strikingly different ways. In spite of this long running interest in touch and tactility, it is vision and visuality which have tended to dominate art historical research in recent decades. This book introduces a new impetus to the discussion of the relationship between touch and sculpture by setting up a dialogue between art historians and individuals with fresh insights who are working in disciplines beyond art history. The collection brings together a rich and diverse set of approaches, with essays tackling subjects from prehistoric figurines to the work of contemporary artists, from pre-modern ideas about the physiology of touch to tactile interaction in the museum environment, and from the phenomenology of touch in recent philosophy to the experimental findings of scientific study. It is the first volume on this subject to take such a broad approach and, as such, seeks to set the agenda for future research and collaboration in this area.

Like any self-respecting cloud, the words of this, Dent's latest volume, have occasion to slip into and out of focus as well as flit between meanings. To recognise such moments is to ensure we are party to an intrigue more about delight and imagination than dissecting (or, heaven help us, directing) a life. An eye for weather (physical / mental) is a cannier companion here than any Baedeker or mind that frets. To be fully present within the action of the text is to see that what we'd first interpreted as 'the finishing line' was, shockingly, 'birds migrating'. The mind is vulnerable, matter is contrary, life is in a state of flux. 'Skip all that tosh about modelling clouds: for every big storm / or soul in torment, I've a shedful of u/s machinery.' This resourceful and energetic new collection acknowledges not just the world we (think we) know but the many and various others. Being here, being reactive to 'all that is', is key.
One might be looking at a game of consequences with serially switched pronouns ...or a stranger-than-life biography where missed moves and alternatives compete with the actualite for attention. Nothing here, however, is blessed by what is commonly understood as 'finality', realised or imagined. Tripping Daylight, Peter Dent's latest collection, finds its unlikely protagonist connecting (or attempting to connect) the experiences of a 'life lived' with a welter of convenient 'truths'-known or suspected-and which may be seen as arguable every step of the way. Shared words and wisdom, occasioned by this singular work, allow both for the making of an expansive public field and the leaving of private tracks.
Peter Dent was born in Forest Gate, London in 1938. He married and began taking writing seriously in the early 1960s. After working in offices and a library, he trained for teaching, from which he retired in 1991. He ran Interim Press for twelve years, publishing a number of books by or on individual writers and artists. His own work has been widely published, in pamphlets, magazines, books and anthologies. He lives in Budleigh Salterton, Devon. 'Handmade Equations' collects over eighty poems written since the beginning of the new century, and exemplifies Peter Dent's quiet but forceful lyric voice, which is both engaged with and yet distanced from the empirical world.
