In 2002 the 21st Colloque of Chateau Gaillard was held in Maynooth in Ireland. This well-presented and richly illustrated volume presents the proceedings. Thirty-one papers present recent archaeological discoveries or research developments at castles and their environs across Europe. Specific case studies are accompanied by more general syntheses of castles and castle-building across broad geographical regions, including Germany, Switzerland, Norman England, the Netherlands, Finland, Bohemia, Andalusia, the Rhineland, and Ireland.
