Understanding Political Science Statistics using SPSS - A Manual with Exercises (Hardcover, annotated edition): Peter Galderisi Understanding Political Science Statistics using SPSS - A Manual with Exercises (Hardcover, annotated edition)
Peter Galderisi
R4,474 Discovery Miles 44 740 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This manual walks students through the procedures for analysis in SPSS and provides exercises that go hand-in-hand with online data sets. The manual complements the textbook Understanding Political Science Statistics: Observations and Expectations in Political Analysis, by Peter Galderisi, making it easy to use alongside the book in a course or as a stand-alone guide to using SPSS. Galderisi demonstrates how to use both syntax and GUI driven formats and shows sample results of the analyses. Filled with annotated screenshots from SPSS version 22 (but compatible with all versions, including the student version), the students will be guided through standard processes replete with examples and exercises to ready them for future work in political science research. The diverse group of data sets provided include subsamples of both the 2008 and 2012 American National Election Studies, a Eurobarometer survey, single year and longitudinal congressional district files, the 2012 Comparative Congressional Election Study data set, and a comparative, crossnational country file. Versions with reduced case numbers and variables are also included that are compatible with the student version. This manual (and a parallel Stata manual) are available as stand-alone products or packaged with the textbook Understanding Political Science Statistics.

Redistricting in the New Millennium (Hardcover): Peter Galderisi Redistricting in the New Millennium (Hardcover)
Peter Galderisi; Contributions by Florence P. Adams, Thomas L. Brunell, Barry C. Burden, Bruce Cain, …
R3,157 Discovery Miles 31 570 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Politics, and the redistricting process through which it is carried out, has always been part of our history. In the last four decades, however, the frequency with which redistricting has taken place has grown dramatically. Through a series of theoretical, historical, and case study essays by leading scholars, Redistricting in the New Millennium addresses the complications of redistricting from before the 1812 plan setting gerrymandering to the latest Congressional races. The essays take the reader through the complicated issues of redistricting, addressing partisan, incumbent, racial, and judicial concerns. The book is essential for students of politics as well as anyone interested in the political process.

Peter Galderisi
R2,272 Discovery Miles 22 720 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

By emphasizing the underlying logic of statistical analysis for greater understanding and drawing on applications and examples from political science, Understanding Political Science Statistics illustrates how students can apply statistical concepts and techniques in their own research, in future coursework, and simply as an informed consumer of numbers in public discourse. Here, the book is paired with the corresponding manual that walks students through the procedures for analysis in Stata and provides exercises that go hand-in-hand with online data sets.

Understanding Political Science Statistics - Observations and Expectations in Political Analysis (Hardcover): Peter Galderisi Understanding Political Science Statistics - Observations and Expectations in Political Analysis (Hardcover)
Peter Galderisi
R5,699 Discovery Miles 56 990 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In politics, you begin by asking theoretically interesting questions. Sometimes statistics can help answer those questions. When it comes to applied statistics, students shouldn't just learn a vast array of formula-they need to learn the basic concepts of statistics as solutions to particular problems. Peter Galderisi demonstrates that statistics are a summary of how to answer the problem: learn the math but only after learning the concepts and methodological considerations that give it context. With this as a starting point, Understanding Political Science Statistics asks students to consider how to address a research problem conceptually before being led to the appropriate formula. Throughout, Galderisi looks at problems through a lens of "observations and expectations," which can be applied to myriad statistical techniques, both descriptive and inferential. This approach links the answers researchers get from their individual data analysis to the research designs and questions from which these analyses are derived. By emphasizing the underlying logic of statistical analysis for greater understanding and drawing on applications and examples from political science (including law), the book illustrates how students can apply statistical concepts and techniques in their own research, in future coursework, and simply as an informed consumer of numbers in public discourse. The following features help students master the material: Legal and Methodological sidebars highlight key concepts and provide applied examples on law, politics, and methodology; End-of-chapter exercises allow students to test their mastery of the basic concepts and techniques along the way; A Sample Solutions Guide provides worked-out answers for odd-numbered exercises, with all answers available in the Instructor's Manual; Key Terms are helpfully called out in both Marginal Definitions and a Glossary; A Companion Website (www.routledge.com/cw/galderisi) with further resources for both students and instructors; A diverse array of data sets include subsets of the ANES and Eurobarometer surveys; CCES; US Congressional district data; and a cross-national dataset with political, economic, and demographic variables; and Companion guides to SPSS and Stata walk students through the procedures for analysis and provide exercises that go hand-in-hand with online data sets.

Understanding Political Science Statistics - Observations and Expectations in Political Analysis (Paperback): Peter Galderisi Understanding Political Science Statistics - Observations and Expectations in Political Analysis (Paperback)
Peter Galderisi
R2,895 Discovery Miles 28 950 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Any student can learn the basic concepts of statistics if they are introduced as solutions to particular problems, and not formulas with a life of their own. In this text, students are introduced to a problem, asked to consider, conceptually, how one would address that problem, and then led through the derivation of the appropriate statistical formula. This applied method of teaching statistics through political science examples allows students to see the research method as problem solving. They learn the math, but only after they learn the concepts that give the math context.

The concepts throughout are presented through the lens of "observations and expectations," applied to myriad statistical techniques, both descriptive and inferential, as well as more generalized concepts of research methodology itself, such as hypothesis testing. Galderisi highlights that with each advance in technical sophistication, each statistical procedure is built on a small set of basic concepts, such as the reasons for standardization or the concept of paired comparisons, to show that they are cumulative. More important than just memorizing a series of formula, this text emphasizes the underlying logic of statistical analysis for greater understanding. Further, the applications and examples drawn from political science allow students to better see how they can apply these concepts and techniques in their own research and in future coursework.

The following pedagogical tools and study aids help students in mastering the basic concepts in order to build on each progression:

  • To help connect with familiar "law and order" type scenarios, at many points throughout the research process is viewed as analogous to a court case, with evidence, motive, and potential negation by opposing attorneys, substituting for data collection and hypothesis testing, theory, and testing for alternate explanations;
  • To help students become better consumers of data ("statistical literacy"), boxed sidebars are used to demonstrate how in the real world minor variations in statistical procedures can produce different results;
  • End-of-chapter exercises allow students to test their mastery of the basic concepts and techniques along the way;
  • Companion guides to SPSS, the open-source program PSPP (a proxy for SPSS), and STATA walk students through the procedures for analysis in these common statistical packages;
  • A broad array of data sets compiled and edited by the author allow students to practice the techniques learned in the text;
  • A companion website, the Research Skills Center, with in-depth and exhaustive practice exercises and additional resources, will be students one-stop shopping for acing the test and mastering the concepts.
