Based on the third International Conference on Symmetries, Differential Equations and Applications (SDEA-III), this proceedings volume highlights recent important advances and trends in the applications of Lie groups, including a broad area of topics in interdisciplinary studies, ranging from mathematical physics to financial mathematics. The selected and peer-reviewed contributions gathered here cover Lie theory and symmetry methods in differential equations, Lie algebras and Lie pseudogroups, super-symmetry and super-integrability, representation theory of Lie algebras, classification problems, conservation laws, and geometrical methods. The SDEA III, held in honour of the Centenary of Noether's Theorem, proven by the prominent German mathematician Emmy Noether, at Istanbul Technical University in August 2017 provided a productive forum for academic researchers, both junior and senior, and students to discuss and share the latest developments in the theory and applications of Lie symmetry groups. This work has an interdisciplinary appeal and will be a valuable read for researchers in mathematics, mechanics, physics, engineering, medicine and finance.
This volume comprises some of the key work presented at two IMA Workshops on Computer Vision during fall of 2000. Recent years have seen significant advances in the application of sophisticated mathematical theories to the problems arising in image processing. Basic issues include image smoothing and denoising, image enhancement, morphology, image compression, and segmentation (determining boundaries of objectsùincluding problems of camera distortion and partial occlusion). Several mathematical approaches have emerged, including methods based on nonlinear partial differential equations, stochastic and statistical methods, and signal processing techniques, including wavelets and other transform theories. Shape theory is of fundamental importance since it is the bottleneck between high and low level vision, and formed the bridge between the two workshops on vision. The recent geometric partial differential equation methods have been essential in throwing new light on this very difficult problem area. Further, stochastic processes, including Markov random fields, have been used in a Bayesian framework to incorporate prior constraints on smoothness and the regularities of discontinuities into algorithms for image restoration and reconstruction. A number of applications are considered including optical character and handwriting recognizers, printed-circuit board inspection systems and quality control devices, motion detection, robotic control by visual feedback, reconstruction of objects from stereoscopic view and/or motion, autonomous road vehicles, and many others.
There has been a resurgence of interest in classical invariant theory driven by several factors: new theoretical developments; a revival of computational methods coupled with powerful new computer algebra packages; and a wealth of new applications, ranging from number theory to geometry, physics to computer vision. This book provides readers with a self-contained introduction to the classical theory as well as modern developments and applications. The text concentrates on the study of binary forms (polynomials) in characteristic zero, and uses analytical as well as algebraic tools to study and classify invariants, symmetry, equivalence and canonical forms. A variety of innovations make this text of interest even to veterans of the subject; these include the use of differential operators and the transform approach to the symbolic method, extension of results to arbitrary functions, graphical methods for computing identities and Hilbert bases, complete systems of rationally and functionally independent covariants, introduction of Lie group and Lie algebra methods, as well as a new geometrical theory of moving frames and applications. This textbook is designed for a one year course covering the fundamentals of partial differential equations, geared towards advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students in mathematics, science, engineering, and elsewhere. The exposition carefully balances solution techniques, mathematical rigor, and significant applications, all illustrated by numerous examples. This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications SOLITONS IN PHYSICS, MATHEMATICS, AND NONLINEAR OPTICS is based on the proceedings of two workshops which were an integral part of the 1988-89 IMA program on NONLINEAR WAVES. The workshops focussed on the main parts of the theory of solitons and on the applications of solitons in physics, biology and engineering, with a special concentration on nonlinear optics. The name Mathematics Mechanization has its origin in the work of Hao Wang (1960s), one of the pioneers in using computers to do research in mathematics, particularly in automated theorem proving. Since the 1970s, this research direction has been actively pursued and extensively dev- oped by Prof. Wen-tsun Wu and his followers. It di?ers from the closely related disciplines like Computer Mathematics, Symbolic Computation and Automated Reasoning in that its goal is to make algorithmic studies and applications of mathematics the major trend of mathematics development in the information age. The International Workshop on Mathematics Mechanization (IWMM) was initiated by Prof. Wu in 1992, and has ever since been held by the Key L- oratory of Mathematics Mechanization (KLMM) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. There have been seven workshops of the series up to now. At each workshop, several experts are invited to deliver plenary lectures on cutting-edge methods and algorithms of the selected theme. The workshop is also a forum for people working on related subjects to meet, collaborate and exchange ideas."

A solid introduction to applications of Lie groups to differential equations which have proved to be useful in practice. The computational methods are presented such that graduates and researchers can readily learn to use them. Following an exposition of the applications, the book develops the underlying theory, with many of the topics presented in a novel way, emphasising explicit examples and computations. Further examples, as well as new theoretical developments, appear in the exercises at the end of each chapter.
