All of us are confronted with complex phenomena occurring in daily life and in the living and inanimate nature surrounding us. Our scientific curiosity strives to unravel the mechanisms at work to create such complexity. Among various approaches to solve this problem, the field of synergetics, developed by Hermann Haken, has proven very successful as a general and interdisciplinary concept for describing and explaining complex phenomena that appear in systems under non-equilibrium conditions. These comprise dynamical states in evolving systems, spatial structure-forming processes, synchronization of states and regulatory mechanisms, and many other examples. The encompassing concepts have been applied to many disciplines, like physics, chemistry, biology, and beyond those also from synergetics to information theory, brain science, economics, and others. Starting from basic methods of complexity research and synergetics, this volume contains thirty contributions on complex systems that exhibit spontaneous pattern formation far from thermal equilibrium. Written by international experts and young researchers assembled under one roof, this volume reflects state of the art research from a variety of scientific fields and disciplines where complexity theory and synergetics are important or even indispensable tools today and in the future.

The concept of this book was developed during the Winter Seminar held in the Austrian mountains at the Alpengasthof Zeinisjoch, Tirol-Vorarlberg, from February 27 to March 3, 1988. Leading experts and advanced students in math ematics, physics, chemistry and computer science met to present and discuss their most recent results in an informal seminar. These were the circumstances that led to the idea of compiling some of the essential contributions presented at this seminar together with others describing basic features of "optimal struc tures in heterogeneous reaction systems". The aim of this book is to present the scientific results of the intensive work carried out in each of the specific fields of research. Each contribution therefore presents the current state of the art together with a deeper treatment enabling a more comprehensive understanding of that particular field of work. The common ideas which unite all the different contributions are already ex pressed in the title of this book. The nature of heterogeneous reaction systems is quite varied. An example is provided by the chemical systems such as noble metal particles which may act as heterogeneous catalysts for gaseous chemical compounds. Under these circumstances the metal particles and/or their sur faces may undergo phase transitions during reaction. Imbihl and Plath report on special catalytic systems of this kind, which are of industrial importance.

Chemie ist bekannt als Anhaufung einer unubersehbaren Fulle von Formeln, mit denen die Chemiker wie mit den Worten einer geheimen Sprache jonglieren. Die Erfahrungswelt jedoch, in der uns die Chemie tagtaglich entgegentritt, sind z.B. Kristalle von Zucker und Salz, Autoabgaskatalysatoren, die Verbrennung von Benzin, polymere Kunststoffe, verchromte Metalle oder die Fulle von Arzneimitteln. Auch diese Formen der Chemie sind heute teilweise bereits einer verallgemeinernden Beschreibung zuganglich, die nicht notwendig auf die molekulare Ebene zuruckgeht. Auf dieser nichtmolekularen Ebene lassen sich solch faszinierenden Strukturen finden wie z.B. schwingende Katalysatoren, fraktale Kristalle beim Galvanisieren und chemische Wellen in einzelligen Lebewesen.Neue Entwicklungen auf dem Gebiet der Synergetik chemischer und einfacher zellbiologischer Systeme werden mit aufgenommen und unter dem Aspekt der nicht-molekularen Strukturbildung erlautert.

Die jahrlich erscheinende Reihe bietet eine praxisbezogene Fort- und Weiterbildung speziell fur den niedergelassenen HNO-Arzt und den Klinikassistenten. Die Themen werden so gewahlt, dass in regelmassigem Turnus alle fur die HNO-Praxis wichtigen Bereiche je nach Aktualitat abgehandelt werden. Der HNO-Arzt kann sich mit dieser Reihe eine komprimierte und standig aktuelle Bibliothek der praktischen Hals-Nasen-Ohren-Heilkunde aufbauen, die ihm modernes Fachwissen und das notige "know-how" vermittelt. In Band 8 werden folgende Themen behandelt: Systematik hereditarer Horstorungen einschliesslich der Otosklerose, die Meniere'sche Erkrankung, neue Moglichkeiten der Klinik in der Stirnhohlenchirurgie, Nebenhohlenzysten und deren Differentialdiagnose, Speichelsteinkrankheit, Prakanzerosen der Mundhohle sowie Lippenmalignome. Mit der Rehabilitation von Kehlkopfexstirpieten wird das grosse Problem der Tumornachsorge aufgegriffen mit besonderer Berucksichtigung der Tatigkeit von Kehlkopflosen-Vereinen. Eine Fragensammlung am Ende des Bandes dient der Selbstkontrolle.

1m vorliegenden vierten Band wird das Angebot an Weiterbildungs- themen aus dem Gebiet der Audiologie und Padaudiologie durch Beitrage tiber objektive Horprtifung, tiber die Hordiagnostik im ersten Lebensjahr und zur Friihforderung Horbehinderter abge- rundet und in etwa vervollstandigt. Die ausfiihrliche Darstellung der Aggravationstests wird besonders dem gutachterlich tatigen Kollegen willkommen sein. Angesichts der lawinenartig zunehmenden serosen Mittelohr- katarrhe ("glue ears") besitzt der Beitrag tiber die Erkrankungen der Ohrtrompete besondere Aktualitat. Vielleicht ist eine Unter- dosierung bei der antibiotischen Behandlung der akuten Mittel- ohrentziindung die Ursache der kind lichen Mittelohrergtisse. Der Beitrag zur Otitistherapie hilft bei Antibiotikaauswahl und in Dosierungsfragen. Aus der Traumatologie wird mit den Verletzungen des zentra- len Mittelgesichtsdrittels ein Gebiet abgehandelt, das auch den niedergelassenen HNO-Kollegen viel beschaftigt und innerhalb seiner diagnostischen und therapeutischen Moglichkeiten liegt. Wichtige und therapeutisch schwer beeinflu bare Traumafolgen sind die Stenosen von Larynx und Trachea. Der entsprechende Beitrag gibt eine Dbersicht tiber Diagnostik und Therapie und zeigt eigene Wege der ZUrcher Klinik auf. Die Tumoren der Speicheldrtisen sind infolge ihrer oberflach- lichen Lage einfachen diagnostischen Verfahren zuganglich und deshalb fUr die Praxis besonders wichtig. Der Beitrag vermittelt u.a. neuere Erkenntnisse zur Klassifizierung und Prognose dieser Gesch wiilste.
