Wind describes in detail the two-way interaction between wind and
ocean waves and shows how ocean waves affect weather forecasting on
timescales of 5 to 90 days. Winds generate ocean waves, but at the
same time airflow is modified due to the loss of energy and
momentum to the waves; thus, momentum loss from the atmosphere to
the ocean depends on the state of the waves. This volume discusses
ocean wave evolution according to the energy balance equation. An
extensive overview of nonlinear transfer is given, and as a
by-product the role of four-wave interactions in the generation of
extreme events, such as freak waves, is discussed. Effects on ocean
circulation are described. Coupled ocean-wave, atmosphere modelling
gives improved weather and wave forecasts. This volume will
interest ocean wave modellers, physicists and applied
mathematicians, and engineers interested in shipping and coastal

Veranlassung zur Abfassung dieses fUr Studierende und fUr Arzte
bestimmten Lehrbuches gibt die fast taglich sich aufdrangende Beob
achtung, daB die in die praktische Tatigkeit hinaustretenden Arzte
doch wohl nicht den Anforderungen gewachsen sind, welche die immer
mehr zunehmende Bedeutung der Urologischen Chirurgie an sie stellt.
Wie oft kommen die nicht mehr besserungsfahigen Kranken endlich in
die Hand des Chirurgen, denen bei rechtzeitig gestellter richtiger
Diagnose hatte geholfen werden konnen: Es sei nur an die zahIlosen
Falle von Veranderungen der Prostata und von Urophthise erinnert
Die Urologische Chirurgie wird stets ein Gebiet sein, auf das
besondere Millie und auch Zeit verwendet werden muB: Die
Durchfiihrung der endoskopischen-, Rontgen- und anderer
Untersuchungen wird immer komplizierter, aber auch ergebnisreicher.
Sie konnen vom praktischen Arzt ebensowenig restlos beherrscht
werden, wie er etwa in der Lage ist, allen operativen
Notwendigkeiten gerecht zu werden. Das ist auch keineswegs zu
verlangen. Aber eine Forderung gibt es: Der Arzt soIl befahigt
sein, in der Urologischen Chirurgie seine Diagnose bis zu ge wissem
Grade selbst zu stellen. Daruber hinaus soIl er in der Lage sein,
seine Kranken zu beraten, er soIl wissen, was die Urologische
Chirurgie zu leisten vermag und wie bedeutungsvoll es ist,
rechtzeitig den Kranken einer genau differenzierten
Diagnosenstellung und damit in vielen Fallen einer chirurgischen
Therapie zuzufiihren, die so oft lebensrettend fUr den Kranken ist,
der aber leider haufig zeitliche Grenzen gezogen sind dadurch, daB
