DEGREESIThe Assault on Equality DEGREESR critiques the social theory underpinning the social policies of the new political right. It focuses on the attempt by Herrnstein and Murray in DEGREESIThe Bell Curve DEGREESR to provide theoretical justification for social program cutbacks and coercive social policies. DEGREESIThe Assault on Equality DEGREESR reanalyzes Herrnstein and Murray's own data and demonstrates that their conclusions are questionable results of polemic and ideology that ignore and contradict the fundamental findings and methods of 20th-century sociology and genetics. The policy proposals of Newt Gingrich are the political counterpart to the flawed social theory of DEGREESIThe Bell Curve DEGREESR. Both scholarly and readable, this is an appropriate supplement in courses such as race relations, stratification, theory, policy, and research methods. It shows the contemporary relevance of basic theoretical and methodological insights of sociology contradicted by DEGREESIThe Bell Curve DEGREESR and other works of the new political right. Appendices present the statistical issues and the theoretical background ignored by such works. From a multi-disciplinary perspective, the authors take issue with the social policy positions of the new right concerning affirmative action, educat
Crisis and Change Today provides a solid introduction to Marxist social theory. The work's unique voice is expressed in its Socratic-dialogic approach, structured around forty questions that students have about society and social change. Topics range from theories of history, economics, unemployment, racial oppression, the state, fascism, the collapse of the Soviet bloc, and points of convergence and difference between the dialectical approach and other approaches to social science. The content and tone of the work invites students to evaluate various traditional and current explanations of social institutions and social processes and encourages them to weigh the debates and investigate further. The first edition was very well received (Distinguished Scholarship Award of the Section on Marxist Sociology of the ASA), and the second edition has been thoroughly revised and updated to be relevant for students today. Though the first edition was written during the wake of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union, the growing gap between the rich and the poor and the economic crisis have generated more interest in using Marxist analysis both as a tool to analyze and understand capitalism and the weaknesses of past Marxist praxis.
GLMFII is devoted to examining how the impact of the French language between 1100 and 1300 affected a virtually homogeneous language area and to what extent this impact can be shown to represent a differentiating factor in relation to the geography of language.
GLMF I presents an examination of the bearers of cultural exchange in spiritual and intellectual matters as well as the dissemination of Gallo-Latin encyclopedias, allegories, poetry, and works of literary criticism. It summarizes the transmission of Latin sermons, devotional literature, biblical exegesis, bible epics, arts literature, philosophy, and theology from France, and also shows interconnections between educational and vernacular texts.
Fashion photography occupies an unknown place, although of great importance, in Antoni Miralda's career. This book allows us to understand how influential his work was at that time. After settling in Paris, the artist began to collaborate regularly with ELLE magazine between 1964 and 1971, working on contemporary seasonal collections linked to the art world.Among the many reports carried out by Miralda for ELLE magazine there is one that stands out for the notoriety of the model who stars in it, the iconic Twiggy. Most images at the time showed models in studios, while Miralda took these models out into the street, into an uncodified and unpredictable space, requiring from the photographer and the team a decision-making process that was never entirely aprioristic. Faced with the Grand Paris of Haussmann or the Paris of museums and imposing cathedrals, Miralda prefers the blind points of historicist urbanism; popular, uncliched places with a great human density. No-Flash Fashion, with its contemporary design and its references to fashion magazines and archives, presents for the first time a detailed view of the undiscovered work of one of the most versatile and iconic artists of the twentieth century.

For the first time, this volume presents a German translation of the Old French heroic epic Aliscans, which served as a model for Wolfram von Eschenbach s novel Willehalm, one of the most important works of the German Middle Ages. The primary source for the text is the edition based on the Venetian manuscript M (Holtus 1985). The aim is to allow students of German Studies to directly compare the two works. Such a comparison reveals both the affinities of the two texts and the completely new form and interpretationpresented by Wolfram."
