Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made

Recent scholarship on the role of the state in designing regulatory
policies in the industrialized democracies has identified a shift
from the increasingly direct role of the state in the 1970s to a
diminishing role in the 1980s. The essays in this volume provide a
systematic analysis of the contemporary means of regulation
employed in a range of economic and social policy areas in Italy.
They support the general thesis that policy in Italy is
characterized by a complex interaction of state, market and social
regulation, rather than by a general trend away from state
intervention.
First published in 1981, The Communist Parties of Italy, France,
and Spain presents a comparative and integrative overview of the
development of three Communist parties in the postwar Europe.
Through the systematic presentation of the most important documents
of the Communist parties, the book provides an access to the basic
declarations and positions to illustrate the strategic and
ideological evolution of these three parties in the advanced
industrial democracies. Eurocommunism, the editors argue cannot be
usefully understood as a phenomenon which suddenly appeared and
equally as rapidly disappeared, in the 1970s. Rather it is a
process of adaptation and change which characterizes the
development of all three parties since World War II. The explicitly
comparative organisation of the documents into five basic themes
-general strategy, alliances, party organization, international
policy, policy toward the communist movement, allows the reader
both to follow any single party in a specific policy area or to
compare the parties in response to major domestic or international
events of significance. Rich in archival material, this book will
be an invaluable resource to scholars and researchers of European
Politics, comparative politics, comparative communism and modern
European history. .
First published in 1982, Unions, Change and Crisis represents the
first detailed, comparative, historical and theoretically grounded
study of two of the major trade union movements of Europe. It
brings together the results of the first part of the first major
study from Harvard University's Centre for European Studies. The
book explores, first individually and then comparatively, the
evolution of the French and Italian Union movements through the end
of the 1970s. It will be of particular interest for students of
trade unions, industrial relations and political economy in France
and Italy, but also those interested in the comparative analysis of
advanced industrial democracies more generally.
First Published in 1980. Routledge is an imprint of Taylor and
Francis, an informa company.

This comparative study brings together academics and practitioners
who work in the field of media and elections to provide a set of
national case studies and an analysis of the legal and regulatory
frameworks that are employed by nation states to ensure that the
media perform according to certain standards during election
periods. In setting out the legal and regulatory framework each
chapter provides an account of the socio-political conditions and
media environment in each of the countries and subsequently details
the laws that govern the print and broadcast media during election
campaign periods. The countries included are France, Germany,
Italy, Russia, South Africa, the United States, and the United
Kingdom. A set of reflections by a Member of the European
Parliament and a set of recommendations for good practice in media
and elections are also included. Thus, the book is organized to
provide a practical guide so that it can be used as a handbook.
This book covers the science of interfaces between an aqueous phase
and a solid, another liquid or a gaseous phase, starting from the
basic physical chemistry all the way to state-of-the-art research
developments. Both experimental and theoretical methods are treated
thanks to the contributions of a distinguished list of authors who
are all active researchers in their respective fields. The
properties of these interfaces are crucial for a wide variety of
processes, products and biological systems and functions, such as
the formulation of personal care and food products, paints and
coatings, microfluidic and lab-on-a-chip applications, cell
membranes, and lung surfactants. Accordingly, research and
expertise on the subject are spread over a broad range of academic
disciplines and industrial laboratories. This book brings together
knowledge from these different places with the aim of fostering
education, collaborations and research progress.
This book, first published in 1990, analyzes the relative impact of
class and status groups versus demographic composition and
political structures on the growth of welfare spending in Italy.
Special attention is given to the role of the aged as
representative of the importance of ascription and middle-class
groups in welfare growth. The authors conclude that the primary
beneficiaries of welfare benefits are not the poor but middle
income groups and that income inequality is reinforced by welfare
spending.
The conference ESSDERC '89 held in September 1989 in Berlin was
concerned with the physics, electrical characteristics, reliability
and processing of solid state devices and electronic materials. The
proceedings contain all invited and contributed papers of the
conference and thus becomes a state-of-the-art-report of solid
state device research in Europe 1989.
Capitalist democracies have always displayed considerable diversity in their key political and economic institutions, such as the organization of economic interest groups and private enterprises, the public sector and the welfare state, as well as political parties and social movements. This book asks whether the challenges of new technologies, citizens' preferences, and growing political and economic interdependence in the 1980s and 1990s force all polities to adopt similar institutional reforms. The authors argue that established arrangements have become difficult to sustain, but that countries choose unique trajectories of reform, not a common approach. The diversity among capitalist democracies persists in a new fashion.
