Democracy promotion in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) remains a central pillar of the foreign policy of the European Union (EU). Rather than concentrating on the relations between the incumbent authoritarian regimes and the opposition in the relevant countries, and on the degree to which these relations are affected by EU efforts at promoting democracy, human rights and the rule of law (an outside-in approach), this collection of articles inverts the focus of such relationships and attempts to look at them 'inside-out'. While some contributions also emphasise the 'outside-in' axis, given that this continues to be analytically rewarding, the overarching thrust of this book is to provide some empirical substance for the claim that EU policy making is not unidirectional and is influenced by the perceptions and actions of its 'targets'. Thus, the focus is on domestic political changes on the ground in the MENA and how they link into what the EU is attempting to achieve in the region. Finally, the self-representation of the EU and its (lack of a) clear regional role is discussed. This book was published as a special issue of Democratization.

Since the early weeks of the so-called Arab Spring, high hopes for democratic, social, and political change in the Middle East have been met with varying degrees of frustration. In the sub-region of the Levant, regional uprisings have turned to violent conflict in places such as Syria, Iraq, and the Gaza Strip. In Syria, popular unrest has caused enormous human suffering in one of the most brutal civil wars the region ever has witnessed, yet the international community has shown an appalling inability to act. Taking the war in Syria as its central point of reference, this book raises the question of whether the developments in the Levant might lead not only to processes of regime change, but also to a fundamental alteration of its entire state system.

Historians have always been studying contested places. Most studies of empires, ancient civilisations and cultures, of nation states, wars and diplomatic relations involve conflicts about territory in one way or another. However, it is only within the last 10-15 years that place has been integrated in historical studies as a theoretical and analytical concept. This volume offers 12 chapters written by academic staff from the History Department at the University of Southern Denmark which contribute to an increased theoretical and methodological consciousness of place as a concept and as an analytical tool within historical studies. The chapters cover historical epochs reaching from a study of the battle of Thermopylae in ancient Greece to a study of the contemporary debate surrounding Ground Zero in New York. The volume may be used as a text book in university courses dealing with territorial, cultural and national interconnectedness and globalisation in both a historical and a contemporary perspective.
