In the summer of 1942 one of the main issues in the balance was the
fate of Malta. The island was still a bastion of the Royal Navy in
the Mediterranean and a constant threat to the supply route for the
enemy land forces in North Africa. It bravely resisted every
onslaught of the Axis powers, but food supplies were desperately
short and fuel oil running low. In August of that year Operation
Pedestal was launched - a last attempt to relieve Malta. Fourteen
merchant ships were allocated to it and the Royal Navy provided the
most powerful force ever to escort a convoy including four aircraft
carriers. Operating from Sardinia and Sicily, the Germans and
Italians let fly with their shore-based aircraft on an
unprecedented scale. The losses on the British side were appalling,
but the objective was achieved and the blockade of Malta was
finally lifted.
Procurement with Purpose describes a growing and powerful movement
- how organisations can use the money they spend with suppliers to
help address wider environmental, social and economic issues. That
is not just about emissions and climate change, but includes how to
address issues such as biodiversity and habitat loss, plastics and
waste, modern slavery, inequality and discrimination, and more.
That organisational 'buying power' is now being used to drive
change across the business and political world. With case studies
from leading organisations, insightful analysis of 'business
purpose' concepts and practical guidance on implementing these
ideas through the procurement and contracting cycle, Procurement
with Purpose is a fascinating and valuable resource for anyone
interested in how organisations can help protect and nurture this
planet and its people.

covering guidelines and procedures on process plants and
interconnecting piping systems. As a follow up with Smith s
best-selling work published in 2007 by Gulf Publishing Company,
"The Fundamentals of Piping Design," this handbook contributes more
customized information on the necessary process equipment required
for a suitable plant layout, such as pumps, compressors, heat
exchangers, tanks, cooling towers and more While integrating
equipment with all critical design considerations, these two
volumes together are must-haves for any engineer continuing to
learn about piping design and process equipment."
The only book of its kind on the market, this book is the companion

The ideas, people, and events that developed art education are
described and analyzed so that art educators and educators in
general will have a better understanding of what has happened (and
is happening) to visual art in the schools. Peter Smith raises the
issue of art education's inordinate emphasis on Eurocentric art. He
challenges the often expressed notion that the field of education
is the cause of art education's problems and proposes that confused
conceptions within the art world are just as much a root of the
difficulty. No other book in art education history gives such close
and analytical attention to the careers of women in the field. The
materials on Germanic cultural and historical influences are
unequaled as is the scholarly treatment of Viktor Lowenfeld,
probably the most influential single figure in 20th-century
American art education.

The Global Maritime distress and Safety System (GMDSS) is becoming
the all-embracing term for communication and data transfer between
ship and shore, and ship and ship. It's a highly automated system
of terrestrial satellite communications technology whose primary
role is to maintain safety of life at sea. Within the next five
years all vessels over 300 tonnes will be required to carry GMDSS
equipment. The seafaring nations of the world have together
established the rules and regulations for good working practices
within the system, and every serving and future navigating officer
will be required to hold the GMDSS General Operator's Certificate.
GMDSS for Navigators brings together in one publication the
knowledge required by anyone who wants to become a qualified and
competent operator of GMDSS communications equipment. It should
prove to be the accepted universal reference for GMDSS training.
SELLING POINTS
* All vessels will soon need to carry true equipment
