contrasts. Peter Tucker presents a fascinating photographic survey
of the region's current bus and coach scene. From the urban streets
of Billingham, Blyth, Darlington, Philadelphia and Newcastle to the
gentler areas of Belford, Edmondsley, Norton and Ryhope, plus
everything in between, Peter Tucker has produced a valuable
photographic record of the modern bus scene. Featuring Arriva, Go
North East and Stagecoach, plus various independent operators
including Borders Buses, Scarlet Band and Weardale, full coverage

Teesside is a conurbation and industrial area in the north-east of
England. Less well known than other key industrial areas such as
Tyneside, the Potteries and the Black Country, Teesside has a
valuable industrial heritage. Based principally on the towns of
Billingham, Middlesbrough, Redcar, Stockton-on-Tees and Thornaby,
Teesside was a key area for engineering, iron and steel,
shipbuilding and the production of chemicals. Today, chemicals and
engineering are still important in an area that has been hit hard
by industrial decline. Intrigued by the stark functional beauty of
Teesside's heavy industry, Peter Tucker began photographing the
area’s industrial landscape in the 1990s. This book provides a
valuable visual record of Teesside's heavy industry in recent
times, plus some of the more surprising more conventionally
attractive places in the area. It will be of immense interest for
enthusiasts of local history, industry, photography and the
north-east region.
The English Lake District and North Lancashire is one of the most
beautiful regions of Great Britain. It is also one of less
documented areas of the modern bus scene, being sparsely populated,
relatively remote and lacking in bus services. Here, Peter Tucker
presents a photographic survey of the area since the 1990s. Packed
with a wealth of largely unpublished photographs, the book features
a wide variety of places including Ambleside, Barrow-in-Furness,
Kendal, Keswick, and Windermere – plus Carlisle and the Lancaster
and Wyre districts of modern Lancashire. In addition to the
well-known towns of Lakeland, the book features less photographed
locations including Brough, Buttermere, Dalton-in-Furness,
Greenodd, Kirkstone, Levens Bridge, Portinscale, Troutbeck Bridge,
and Warton, plus many more.

The Metropolitan counties of South and West Yorkshire have some of
the most intensive bus operations outside Birmingham and London.
The former metropolitan counties include considerable amounts of
rural terrain alongside densely populated urban areas. Author Peter
Tucker takes us on a lively photographic tour of the region’s
transport scene. The journey takes us everywhere from genteel towns
like Horsforth, Ilkley and Wetherby down to areas of heavy industry
such as the Don Valley in Sheffield. In between we visit places as
contrasting as Barnsley, Dewsbury, Pontefract and Rotherham and
Swinton. Yorkshire’s cosmopolitan cities are not forgotten
either, as we explore Bradford, Leeds, Sheffield and Wakefield.
Featuring operators such as Arriva, First and Stagecoach, this
publication also looks back to the 1990s with photographs depicting
buses of the now defunct Yorkshire Rider, Yorkshire Traction and
West Riding.
This book is Peter Tucker's response to the requests of many of his
former co-workers and friends to put on the record for the benefit
of posterity his experience in over half a century of public
service. Always meticulous and orderly, he begins from his roots in
Shebar and goes through the various aspects of his life, describing
in simple terms the trials, tribulations and triumphs of his long
career in the public Service. He gives a clear and very informative
story of the origin of his ancestors, who founded the Tucker
Kingdom in the Sherbro region of Sierra Leone, their wealth and
power, as well as their relationship with the British Crown. In his
peculiar modest way, he describes his life and successes in his
beloved St. Edwards School and his triumphs at Fourah Bay College.
He entered the Public Service of Sierra Leone in 1955, and in the
year of Independence he was deployed in the Prime Minister's
Office, where he was given the responsibility of recruiting and
training Sierra Leoneans to replace the expatriate staff of the
colonial administration and for the transformation of the Civil
Service into one for an Independent State. He describes the way he
did it and the immense satisfaction he found in serving his country
well at that important turning point in its history. The Author
also gives an insider's account of the 1967 General Elections and
the conflict arising therefrom. He candidly describes the events of
that period and refutes many of the speculations, distortions and
guesses about what really happened in those few days. Working with
the NRC, with all the eccentricities of Brigadier Juxon-Smith is an
unforgettable experience, and the reader is given a glimpse of it
in this book.
