This book is a compendium of peer reviewed papers resulting from the International Symposium on Spatial Data Handling (SDH), held in Ottawa, Canada, July 9-12, 2002. It presents a selection of papers that demonstrate a maturing in geographical information science (GISc). Of the many challenges under the general topic of spatial data handling, a number of key areas provide the focus for this book. They tackle issues such as database design and architecture, interoperability, integration, fusion, spatial reasoning, visualisation and web-based mapping, among a number of other aspects.
The increase in private property value, growth of underground and multilevel development, and the emergence of 3D technologies in planning and GIS drives the need to record 3D situations in cadastral registration. 3D Cadastre in an International Context: Legal, Organizational, and Technological Aspects demonstrates how to record 3D scenarios in order to improve insight into overlapping constructions. This book emphasizes the technical aspects of cadastral registration, focusing on four main topics: context (in which 3D situations in seven countries are studied); the framework for modeling 2D and 3D situations; models for a 3D cadastre; and realization of a 3D cadastre. The book presents preliminary solutions for issues related to efficient methods for 3D data collection, 3D data structuring and modeling, organization of 2D and 3D objects in one environment, 3D database creation and 3D analyzing.
Initiatives, such as INSPIRE and the US DHS Geospatial Data Model, are working to develop a rich set of standards that will create harmonized models and themes for the spatial information infrastructure. However, this is only the first step. Semantically meaningful models must still be developed in order to stimulate interoperability. Creating Spatial Information Infrastructures (SII) presents solutions to the problems preventing the launch of a truly effective SII. Leading experts in SII development present a complete overview of SII, including user and application needs, theoretical and technological foundations, and examples of realized working SII's. The book includes semantic applications in each discussion and explains their importance to the future of geo-information standardization. Offering practical solutions to technical and nontechnical obstacles, this book provides the tools needed to take the next step toward a working semantic web-one that will revolutionize the way the world accesses and utilizes spatial information.

This book, entitled Advances in Spatial Data Handling, is a compendium of papers resulting from the International Symposium on Spatial Data Handling (SDH), held in Ottawa, Canada, July 9-12, 2002. The SDH conference series has been organised as one of the main activities of the International Geographical Union (IGU) since it was first started in Zurich in 1984. In the late 1990's the IGU Commission of Geographic Information Systems was discontinued and a study group was formed to succeed it in 1997. Much like the IGU Commission, the objectives of the Study Group are to create a network of people and research centres addressing geographical information science and to facilitate exchange of information. The International Symposium on Spatial Data Handling, which is the most important activity of the IGU Study Group, has, throughout its 18 year history been highly regarded as one of the most important GIS conferences in the world.
