The act of blessing is a powerful one in Christianity with deep biblical roots, reaching back to the early chapters of Genesis. It expresses a very basic human instinct - the longing for protection, peace and happiness. So it is not surprising that the world is full of blessings for that most basic of human provisions - a place to call home. Peter Watkins has collected together over 100 house blessings from widely differing cultures and sources - the Bible, Celtic spirituality, Latin prayers (translated here!), prayers of St Francis and other saints, poems of blessing from Robert Herrick and other literary figures, contemporary liturgies for rites of blessing for each room of a home - and much more.

This is a first-hand account of one of the most important scientific discoveries of the twentieth century. In 1983, two groups of scientists working at CERN near Geneva collected data, which were subsequently shown to be consistent with the W and Z bosons. This work earned two of those scientists the 1984 Nobel Prize in Physics. The author of this book, Peter Watkins, was a member of one of those groups. His book opens with a brief statement of the background, explaining in non-technical terms the theoretical developments that led to the prediction in the late 1960s of the existence of the W and Z bosons. He then moves on rapidly to describe the background to the experiments, explaining as he does so the problems that had to be overcome, and giving details of the accelerators, detectors and computers used in these very advanced- and difficult- experiments.

Summer in San Francisco and a killer is on the loose. Twelve victims so far. Scrawled in each victim's blood, a single word: "Morningstar." Two innocents suddenly find their lives swept up in a maelstrom of madness and murder. Shelley Masterton -- her dreams invaded by a dead friend, one of the killer's victims -- becomes an unwitting recruit in a plan for revenge from beyond the grave. And freelance journalist Donovon Moon receives a phone call offering the scoop of a lifetime: Morningstar is on the line...and wants to talk. When Peter Atkins' debut novel Morningstar was first published in the U.K., the praise was unanimous. Clive Barker called it "Vividly imagined and stylishly realized -- a mingling of thriller and horror story that makes for an irresistible ride" and Neil Gaiman declared it to be "The best first novel I've read in a long time." Morningstar now reveals its terrors and wonders to a new generation of readers.
A delicious collection of the very best of wit, satire and humorous quotations about the Church, its clergy, the people who put up with them - and vice versa. Spanning the centuries from Chaucer to the present day, it is a glorious send tup of the human foibles that so often get in the way when the Church tries to live up to its calling. Many familiar figures from literature and letters are included, but there are endless surprises and novelties too, making The Soul of Wit not only a book to give great pleasure, but an essential resource for speakers, writers and preachers too.
