The act of blessing is a powerful one in Christianity with deep
biblical roots, reaching back to the early chapters of Genesis. It
expresses a very basic human instinct - the longing for protection,
peace and happiness. So it is not surprising that the world is full
of blessings for that most basic of human provisions - a place to
call home. Peter Watkins has collected together over 100 house
blessings from widely differing cultures and sources - the Bible,
Celtic spirituality, Latin prayers (translated here!), prayers of
St Francis and other saints, poems of blessing from Robert Herrick
and other literary figures, contemporary liturgies for rites of
blessing for each room of a home - and much more.
This innovative book links theory to practice with regard to
teaching pragmatics. In laying out why this is useful, how it is
achievable, and what to teach when it comes to pragmatics, this
book outlines the theoretical background and offers a wide range of
hands-on activities. While offering coverage of timely issues like
pragmatics in text messaging, the authors expertly provide further
guidance for developing pragmatics curricula for learners of
different ages and languages, and at different proficiency levels
in a research-based, practical way. This reader-friendly resource
gives pre- and in-service FL/L2 teachers the tools and confidence
to understand and implement these principles in the classroom and
beyond. Advanced students and researchers of applied linguistics,
education, and psychology, as well as curriculum developers,
teacher trainers, and aspiring teachers around the world – and
their students – will benefit from this unique book.

This is a first-hand account of one of the most important
scientific discoveries of the twentieth century. In 1983, two
groups of scientists working at CERN near Geneva collected data,
which were subsequently shown to be consistent with the W and Z
bosons. This work earned two of those scientists the 1984 Nobel
Prize in Physics. The author of this book, Peter Watkins, was a
member of one of those groups. His book opens with a brief
statement of the background, explaining in non-technical terms the
theoretical developments that led to the prediction in the late
1960s of the existence of the W and Z bosons. He then moves on
rapidly to describe the background to the experiments, explaining
as he does so the problems that had to be overcome, and giving
details of the accelerators, detectors and computers used in these
very advanced- and difficult- experiments.
This book is for anyone who wants to provide their learners with
rich and rewarding reading experiences. Drawing on current reading
theory, the book promotes the teaching of reading in a
theoretically sound way, moving beyond a comprehension-testing
approach to reading. The practical part of the book provides a
collection of accessible, generic activities so that teachers can
support and develop learners' reading skills and strategies. Its
scope is wide-ranging, from promoting reading and developing
fluency, to exploiting digital sources, using learner-generated
texts and assessing reading. Further activities support teachers
develop excellence in the teaching of reading through guided
reflection and action research.
This practical guide provides legal practitioners, participants,
witnesses and all those with an interest in public inquiries, with
stage-by-stage 'hands on' guidance on the process of public
inquiries into matters of public concern. With its user-friendly
format of summaries, checklists, 'top tips' and flow charts, this
book looks at the setting up of a public inquiry through to its
close. It includes information on: - the appointment of the chair
and inquiry team; - the choice and significance of the venue; - the
drawing up of inquiry procedures, protocols and rulings; - the
appointment and role of core participants; - evidence taking; -
conducting and attending hearings; - the role of experts; - the
writing and publication of the inquiry report. Drawing on the
authors' extensive experience as public inquiry lawyers, working on
inquiries such as the Bloody Sunday Inquiry, Mid Staffordshire NHS
Foundation Trust Inquiry, Leveson Inquiry and Grenfell Tower
Inquiry, together with contributions from a number of other eminent
practitioners in the field, this book provides valuable,
comprehensive guidance on the public inquiry process.
Mastering the fundamentals of physical chemistry is a challenge for
many. The new edition of "Elements of Physical Chemistry" is the
perfect resource for smoothing the path to a clear and thorough
understanding of this vital branch of chemistry. With its emphasis
on the physical principles, conveyed through lucid explanations and
careful exposition of the essential mathematical concepts, and
enhanced by enriched pedagogy and a new two-colour text design,
"Elements of Physical Chemistry" is the perfect text for opening up
this fascinating subject to more students than ever before
Supplementary resources. The companion web site will contain
illustrations from book and 'Living Graphs', which give students
the ability to alter parameters displayed in the graph and follow
the consequences. A solutions manual will provide worked solutions
to all the problems in the book. It will be provided free to
adopters of the book.
A delicious collection of the very best of wit, satire and humorous
quotations about the Church, its clergy, the people who put up with
them - and vice versa. Spanning the centuries from Chaucer to the
present day, it is a glorious send tup of the human foibles that so
often get in the way when the Church tries to live up to its
calling. Many familiar figures from literature and letters are
included, but there are endless surprises and novelties too, making
The Soul of Wit not only a book to give great pleasure, but an
essential resource for speakers, writers and preachers too.
Quantum mechanics embraces the behavior of all known forms of
matter, including the atoms and molecules from which we, and all
living organisms, are composed. Molecular Quantum Mechanics leads
us through this absorbing yet challenging subject, exploring the
fundamental physical principles that explain how all matter
behaves.
With the clarity of exposition and extensive learning features that
have established the book as a leading text in the field, Molecular
Quantum Mechanics takes us from the foundations of quantum
mechanics, through quantum models of atomic, molecular, and
electronic structure, and on to discussions of spectroscopy, and
the electronic and magnetic properties of molecules. Lucid
explanations and illuminating artworks help to visualise the many
abstract concepts upon which the subject is built.
Fully updated to reflect the latest advances in computational
techniques, and enhanced with more mathematical support and worked
examples than ever before, Molecular Quantum Mechanics remains the
ultimate resource for those wishing to master this important
subject.
