What was supposed to be a short business trip to Equatorial Guinea turned into a journey to the depths of hell.
Black Beach, located on Bioko island off the mainland of Equatorial Guinea, is one of the world’s most feared prisons, notorious for its brutality and inhumane conditions.
In 2013, South African businessman Daniel Janse van Rensburg set off to the West African country to finalise a legitimate airline contract with a local politician. Within days, Daniel was arrested by the local Rapid Intervention Force and detained without trial in the island’s infamous ‘Guantanamo’ cells, and was later taken to Black Beach. This is his remarkable story of survival over nearly two years, made possible by his unwavering faith and the humanity of a few fellow inmates.
In this thrilling first-person narrative, Daniel relives his ordeal, describing the harrowing conditions in the prison, his extraordinary experiences there, and his ceaseless hope to return to South Africa and be reunited with his family. A story of courage in the face of overwhelming adversity, Black Beach demonstrates the strength of the human spirit and the toll injustice takes on ordinary people who fall foul of the powerful and corrupt.

Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made

Originally published in 1974 this book examines the problems
confronting the London public transport system in the 1970s. After
a brief historical introduction the book then pays particular
attention to planning, capital investment, co-ordination, the
relationship between transport and housing, the competition between
road and rail and the grants paid by central government. There are
15 case studies of significant topics ranging from station car
parks to bus lanes, new tube trains to facilities for pedestrians.
Although the focus is on London, many of the issues are common to
other UK cities and across the world.

We have not yet unravelled how HIV/AIDS is changing South Africa's
social fabric, despite the fact that over 5 million South Africans
are living with the virus. Do we know how HIV/AIDS may affect
different sectors of society, possibly altering the course set for
development? Is it possible that the way in which the epidemic is
being fought - through health and human rights activism - is
adjusting our expectations of justice and equality? This title is a
multidisciplinary overview of the discourse on HIV/AIDS and
explores the concept of human security and the global development
agenda. Contributions are drawn from a diverse group of academics
and activists who examine how the epidemic intersects with
politics, society, culture and the economy in South Africa,
addressing human rights, gender inequality, prisons, the military,
the education sector, rural livelihoods and the orphan crisis.

Television adaptation of Thomas Hardy's classic novel, starring
Keeley Hawes and Tom Georgeson. In a rural English village in the
mid-19th century, an impoverished young man falls in love with a
middle-class schoolteacher and attempts to win her over. At the
same time, in the local church the traditional choir is about to be
replaced by a brand new modern organ, with, controversially, a
female organist.
Genetics, Health Care and Public Policy is an introduction to the
new discipline of public health genetics. It brings together the
insights of genetic and molecular science as a means of protecting
and improving the health of the population. Its scope is wide and
requires an understanding of genetics, epidemiology, public health
and the principles of ethics, law and the social sciences. This
book sets out the basic principles of public health genetics for a
wide audience from those providing health care to those involved in
establishing policy. The emphasis throughout the text is on
providing an accessible introduction to the field. The content
moves from the basic concepts, including definitions and history,
through chapters on genetics, genetic technology, epidemiology,
genetics in medicine, genetics in health services, ethical, legal
and social implications, to the implications for health policy. It
provides one-stop, introductory coverage of this rapidly developing
and multidisciplinary field.

This book is born from the complexities of life. Unorthodox poetry,
brief anecdotes and life observations, quotes, written in a form
that is this author's own unique style. Each portraying the roads
traveled through the many hardships, as well as joys encountered,
in one simple and ordinary life. After having been dealt a blow
from the diagnosis of chronic auto-immune illness after only ten
years into her marriage, Linda recounts the simple things of life
that can be considered blessings. And reveals the ongoing struggle
with depression, pain, and illness, that have spanned over thirty
years of trying to live normally despite them. Being alone in life
at age fifteen was preparation for the physical battles that lay
ahead. The feelings of isolation, loneliness and of 'being out of
place' most all of her life, helped build the mental stamina to
endure the illnesses that were to come later on. Through it all,
she's kept the optimistic view that life still mattered. These
compiled works, some from the time she was very young, through
today, encompass the multitude of emotions experienced in a
sometimes difficult life, and will hopefully serve as an
encouragement to others who struggle.
Django "Jake" Shepherd has finally arrived at the bottom. Once a
chart-topping songwriter hanging out with stars, these days he's
working the bar at Jezebel's, the wildest and most notorious
gentlemen's club in Nashville. Haunted by demons both past and
present, yet stubbornly clinging to the faint hope of a comeback,
Jake's life is about to take an abrupt turn, launching him on a
brutal and poetic journey of violence, sex, and murder that will
take him from the underbelly of Music City to the stately mansions
of Atlanta and beyond, barreling on at full-tilt boogie to the
music of Jake's impending dance with Death.

The subsurface of the East Midlands region has been intensively
explored by boreholes and seismic surveys on account of its rich
resources of coal and hydrocarbons. This memoir is based on an
exhaustive use of such data, acquired during seven decades of
exploration, and aims to present a concise review of the tectonic
and sedimentary history of the Carboniferous rocks of the East
Midlands region. It is the fourth in a series of subsurface memoirs
relating to Upper Palaeozoic basins, and forms a sequel to a
previously published account of the adjacent south-west Pennine
Basin (Smith et al., 2005).

John Coltrane left behind a legacy of experimental and extremely
spiritual work whose timeless quality still reverberates today.
After his untimely death many poseurs came out to stake their claim
as the next Coltrane. Many tried and many failed. Then in 1969 a
former sideman of Coltrane's, Pharoah Sanders, stepped out from the
shadow of his mentor and recorded Karma, which bore the soul of
Coltrane's musical and spiritual passion.
