'By the gods, look what the goat dragged in by the knackers! Never did I see such a pitiful aggregation of sweat- soaked, grovelling jobbards!' General Braggadocio is a pompous and lecherous bully who makes life miserable for all around him. His enslaved concubine and a quick-thinking servant join forces in a bid to escape his household and teach him a lesson he will never forget. With the help of a randy old magistrate, a mischievous pet monkey and an imaginary visitor from Greece, they play upon the General's many vices and vanities as they attempt to regain their freedom and return home. Loosely based on Miles Glorious by Plautus, Vice Versa is a madcap, farcical, feel-good comedy from multi-award-winning playwright Phil Porter.
You know, I honestly believe he has two hearts? A heart that fails him, of course. But another that keeps him going - a heart that won't be beaten! A story of hope, from Afghanistan to Wales. Herat, Afghanistan, 2000. A young mother makes a speech demanding freedom for Afghan women, angering local Taliban leaders who issue a warrant for her execution. With no choice but to run, the Amiri family embark on a long and terrifying journey out of Afghanistan and across Europe with the UK as their ultimate goal. Thrown into an unfamiliar world of fake passports and untrustworthy handlers, the Amiris must learn how to live with nothing and avoid capture at all costs. But with their eldest son Hussein's life-threatening heart condition growing steadily worse, the journey soon becomes a race against time. Will they beat the odds and reach the UK in time for Hussein to receive the surgery he so badly needs? The Boy with Two Hearts is the story of a family in danger and a love letter to the NHS. This extraordinary true story reveals the courage and humanity behind each refugee story, showing that hope and a sense of home can be found in the most unlikely places. This edition was published to coincide with the production at the National Theatre in London in October 2022.
"This is a true story and it's a love story. This is our love story. And the first thing I want to tell you is this: Love is not a castiron set of symptoms. Love is whatever you feel it to be." Blink is the story of Jonah and Sophie, two introverts thrown together by grief and fate. Newly arrived in a city too busy to notice them they embark on a heartfelt romance without ever exchanging a word. Will their relationship rescue them from loneliness or are their scars too deep to heal? A sweet, off-beat romantic comedy from multi-award-winning playwright Phil Porter.
Titus obeys every rule but the older Miranda wants some questions answered - would their hands really turn into claws if they had kippers for breakfast? Would she go egg-shaped if she broke an egg? Miranda gleefully smashes an egg. Hey presto - nothing happens! The two children confront Angela and then run away. Excitement turns to fear when things start to get creepy and they discover the home of the sinister Mouth Collector...-2 women, 2 men
This is the tale of Jonah, Sophie, and a fox called Scruffilitis. It's a love story. A dysfunctional, voyeuristic and darkly funny love story, but a love story all the same. This new play by the Bruntwood Playwriting Prize winner Phil Porter, is an exciting collaboration between Soho Theatre - London's most vibrant venue for new writing, comedy and cabaret - and internationally acclaimed Fringe First winners nabokov.
December 1914. As families across Europe gather to celebrate Christmas, a generation of young men find themselves far away from their loved ones in the trenches of the Western Front. There they face a world seemingly devoid of any peace or goodwill. But on Christmas Eve 1914, as the men of the Warwickshire Regiment shelter in their trenches, something astonishing happens. Across no-man's land they hear music. The German soldiers are singing Christmas carols; the same carols their families are listening to, hundreds of miles away in Birmingham, Warwick and Stratford-upon-Avon. Leaving their trenches, carrying only their courage and their humanity, they go to meet their enemies; not to fight, but talk, to exchange gifts, to celebrate Christmas. And the next day, together, they play an unforgettable game of football.
Luke's world is in chaos. His 'mates' want to hurt him, his love-life's a mess, he misses his dad and hates his mum's new boyfriend. He's even lost his passion for piano. When the sound of a child crying starts to haunt him, Luke thinks he's going mad. But the noise soon leads him to an attic room in a creepy house and the strange and secretive people who live there. Can he resolve the complex mysteries of the house before the bullies close in on him? And will the journey free him from his sadness? Adapted from Carnegie medal-winner Tim Bowler's popular book, "Starseeker" is a thrilling rites-of-passage tale.
Thomas Middleton's outrageous 'city comedy': a brilliantly plotted, farcical satire of lies and lust, translated from Jacobean London to the Soho of the 1950s. A dashingly impecunious bachelor, Dick Follywit, in need of quick cash and a good time has to live on his wits so turns con-man to fool his rich uncle. He variously becomes a Lord, a high-class call girl and a poor actor. Meanwhile, Truly Kidman, a high-class call girl - poor but quick-witted - needs to fool and then marry a rich young man... Sean Foley and Phil Porter's edited version of Middleton's play is faithful to the original text but adapts it to fit the seedy world of 1950s Soho, updating character names and including songs of the time to enhance the biting satire of lust and deception in the life of Bohemian London.
Janie's a force of nature, like some considerable disaster zone. It's baking hot, her mouth is peeling away and now she's got horns. Been on her head for yonks apparently, growing. Roper can feel his grandson Linden pulling away from him, pushing him away, like his eyes are mini pebbles all suddenly. Like everyone, Josefa needs a bit of a miracle to happen. One summer's night, with the help of a paddling pool, a baby dragon and a bottle of gin, it does. But how long can anything perfect last? Funny, open-hearted, surprising and strange, The Cracks in My skin is a new kind of love story...a new kind of family.
Phil Porter is an award-winning new playwright currently under commission at the Bush Theatre.
