A pracitcal guide to opening and strengthening your reiki channels. Since originating in Japan in 1922, Reiki has been adapted to cultural traditions across the world. Reiki practitioners use a technique called palm healing or hands-on healing through which a "universal energy" is transferred through the palms of the practitioner to the patient in order to encourage emotional or physical healing. Reiki is used for healing oneself and others and for spiritual development. It works by combining two things: initiations that awaken and open your energy channels and techniques for using your hands, eyes, and intention to direct this energy flow where needed. Anyone who wishes to do this work must prepare by following particular methods and steps, all wonderfully explained in this introductory guide. Discover why Reiki is so unique and learn about its origins, five precepts, attunements, basic hand positions, and special treatments created by Reiki's founder, Mikao Usui. All the spiritual practices here have been specifically chosen to guide readers on a path of love, light, healing, and self-knowledge.
The author of more than 50 books - 125 million copies in print - Clive Cussler is the current grandmaster of adventure literature. Dirk Pitt, the sea-loving protagonist of 22 of Cussler's novels, remains among the most popular and influential adventure series heroes of the past half-century. This first critical review of Cussler's work features an overview of Pitt, the supporting characters and other heroes, an examination of Cussler's themes and influences, a review of his most important adventures, such as Raise the Titanic! and Iceberg, and a look at adaptations of his work in other media. Cussler joins the pantheon of such acclaimed adventure writers as Rudyard Kipling, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Ian Fleming, and this overdue volume demonstrates that beneath Cussler's immense popularity lies a literary depth that well merits scholarly attention.
John Maynard Keynes was the most influential economist of the 20th Century, whose doctrines had a huge impact on American prosperity in the years following the Second World War. This new book by John Philip Jones describes the main features of Keynes's work, including the fiscal and monetary policies he recommended, together with a detailed tracking of how his theories played out in the American economy. The book focuses on each individual aspect of Keynes's doctrines: his revolutionary emphasis on the economy as a whole (the study that would later become known as macroeconomics); consumer demand and where it leads; investment demand and where it leads; the rate of interest and the influence of monetary policy; the role of government in controlling fiscal policy; and the overarching importance of expectations, optimism and pessimism. The book concludes with the seven major lessons drawn from the American economy in the latter half of the 20th Century and how these lessons were forecast by Keynes. An excellent introduction to Keynes and his legacy for students and non-specialist members of the public who want to know more about how the economy is controlled and stimulated, it is also of considerable interest to students of modern economic history.

Pakistan’s 2018 general elections marked the second successful transfer of power from one elected civilian government to another—a remarkable achievement considering the country’s history of dictatorial rule. Pakistan’s Political Parties examines how the civilian side of the state’s current regime has survived the transition to democracy, providing critical insight into the evolution of political parties in Pakistan and their role in developing democracies in general. Pakistan’s numerous political parties span the ideological spectrum, as well as represent diverse regional, ethnic, and religious constituencies. The essays in this volume explore the way in which these parties both contend and work with Pakistan’s military-bureaucratic establishment to assert and expand their power. Researchers use interviews, surveys, data, and ethnography to illuminate the internal dynamics and motivations of these groups and the mechanisms through which they create policy and influence state and society. Pakistan’s Political Parties is a one-of-a-kind resource for diplomats, policymakers, journalists, and scholars searching for a comprehensive overview of Pakistan’s party system and its unlikely survival against an interventionist military, with insights that extend far beyond the region.

?????? Philip Jones Griffiths is renowned as the foremost photographer of the war in Viet Nam. President of Magnum for a record five years, his 1971 publication Viet Nam Inc was a crucial influence in changing public opinion in the US at the time of the conflict. ?????? This new book however presents a period much closer to home, with a departure towards many previously unseen images taken of Britain in the 1950s, 60s and 70s. ?????? Griffiths's images depict social and political affairs and landmark events over three decades of change and upheaval in Great Britain. ?????? From the Beatles in Liverpool and coalminers in Wales, to CND marches on the streets of London and funeral processions in Northern Ireland, the images are acute, human, and often wry, moments describing an important transition in British society. ??????Tock! presents a domestic revolution, from a photographer whose international fame covering a country on the other side of the world is now put in the context of his equally incisive work at home. ?????? An exhibition of over 50 images from the book was exhibited in 2007 at Trolley Gallery, London and afterwards at Savignano Festival, Italy. ?????? In 2008 the images will be exhibited in Liverpool, England, as part of their 'City of Culture' celebrations. ?????? Philip Jones Griffiths was recently honored for Achievement in Photojournalism, at the 5th Annual Lucie Awards in New York, October 2007.
Description: Viet Nam at Peace is the monumental chronicle of a country struggling to emerge from the apocalyptic destruction of war--a destruction so seismic that many thought (vainly) that it would end all contemporary imperial aggression. Philip Jones Griffiths has visited VietNam 25 times since the end of the war. The first Westerner to travel by road from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City after the war, and later the Ho Chi Minh trail, he has amassed an unparalleled photographic record of the post-war transformation of the country. Featuring 300 black and white images, Viet Nam at Peace chronicles not only the country's shattered terrain, but also the destruction of its citizens' culture, minds, hearts, and hopes. Limbless heroes, Amerasian children, and boat people are shown here alongside horrific attempts by the Vietnamese to curb the hydra of today's increasing consumerist excesses. From the first days of terrible hardships, as joys of victory were quickly tempered by the reality of the extent of the destruction, to today's re-emergence of social problems like prostitution and drug addiction, Griffiths paints a comprehensive and complex portrait of a society forever marked by the brutality of war.
Italy in the Middle Ages was unique among the countries of Europe in recreating, in a changed environment, the urban civilization of antiquity - the society, culture, and political formations of city-states. This book examines the origins and nature of this phenomenon from the fall of Rome to the eve of its consummation, the Italian Renaissance. The explanation is sought in Italy's singular `double existence' between two contrasted worlds - ancient and medieval. The ancient was characterised by the total predominance of the landed aristocracy in economy and society, enforced through a peculiar system of city states embracing town and country. The new medieval influences were marked by the separation of town, country and aristocracy, by the identification of towns with trade and a mercantile bourgeoisie, and by commercial and proto-industrial revolution. Italy shared in both worlds. It remained a land of cities and of an urbanized ruling class (except in the Norman South) and re-established territorial city states; but the staes were very different from those of antiquity, the city leaders in the commercial revolution, and Italy itself seen as a nation of shopkeepers, birthplace of capitalism. In this fascinating and ground-breaking study, Philip Jones traces in detail the tension and interaction between the two traditions, civic and patrician, mercantile and bourgeois, through all phases of Italian life to their culmination in two rival regimes of communes and despots.
We are told that the future of work will be increasingly automated. Algorithms, processing massive amounts of information at startling speed, will lead us to a new world of effortless labour and a post-work utopia of ever expanding leisure. But behind the gleaming surface stands millions of workers, often in the Global South, manually processing data for a pittance. Recent years have seen a boom in online crowdworking platforms like Amazon's Mechanical Turk and Clickworker, and these have become an increasingly important source of work for millions of people. And it is these badly paid tasks, not algorithms, that make our digital lives possible. Used to process data for everything from the mechanics of self-driving cars to Google image search, this is an increasingly powerful part of the new digital economy, although one hidden and rarely spoken of. But what happens to work when it makes itself obsolete. In this stimulating work that blends political economy, studies of contemporary work, and speculations on the future of capitalism, Phil Jones looks at what this often murky and hidden form of labour looks like, and what it says about the state of global capitalism.
