Der Autor dieses umfangreichen Werkes untersuchte anlasslich zweier Vortrage, die er im Jahr 1854 in Berlin halten durfte, das soziale Leben und die kirchlichen Zustande in den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika. Seine Bemuhungen bezogen sich hier insbesondere auf die Deutschen in den USA. Schaff geht dabei zunachst auf die Grosse und das Wachstum sowie die politischen Verhaltnisse in Nord-Amerika ein. Er erlautert den vorhandenen Nationalcharakter und das gesellige Leben sowie Religion und Kirche im Allgemeinen. In der Tiefe erlautert er die unterschiedlichen Kirchen und Sekten der damaligen Zeit und erganzt diesen Abschnitt um die deutschen Kirchen in Amerika. Philipp Schaff lebte von 1819 bis 1893. Er war ein geburtiger Schweizer, der in Deutschland als protestantischer Theologe und Kirchenhistoriker ausgebildet wurde. Nach seiner Ausbildung lebte und lehrte er in den Vereinigten Staaten von Nordamerika, wo er im Mai 1893 in New York verstarb
