Glucose syrups (commonly known as corn syrups in North America) are
derived from starch sources such as maize, wheat and potatoes.
Offering alternative functional properties to sugar as well as
economic benefits, glucose syrups are extremely versatile
sweeteners, and are widely used in food manufacturing and other
industries. They are a key ingredient in confectionery products,
beer, soft drinks, sports drinks, jams, sauces and ice creams, as
well as in pharmaceuticals and industrial fermentations.
This book brings together all the relevant information on the
manufacture and use of glucose syrups. Drawing on forty years'
experience in the international glucose industry, the author
provides a valuable reference for all those involved in the
processing and buying of these syrups, and for scientists involved
in the manufacture of a full range of food (and some non-food)
products in which the syrups are ingredients. The emphasis is on
practical information - recipes are included where relevant in the
applications chapters, and appendices offer commonly-used
calculations and useful data. Food technologists can use the book
to make choices about the most suitable glucose syrup to use in a
particular application, and also to adapt recipes in order to
replace sugar (sucrose) or other ingredients. A glossary of terms
reflecting the international terminology of the industry completes
the book.
Protest songs are united by the fact they all have something to
say, something to dispute, or something to rile against, whether it
be political, social, or personal. "Story Behind the Protest Song"
features 50 of the most influential musical protests and statements
recorded to date, providing pop-culture viewpoints on some of the
most tumultuous times in modern history. Among the featured: songs
about the Vietnam War, the civil rights movement, the most recent
upheaval over policy in the Middle East, as well as teenage
rebellion, animal rights, criticisms of mass media, and even
protest songs that lambaste other protest songs.
This indispensable guide tackles it all: the behind-the-scenes
stories of the most influential protest songs in American popular
culture, examining the subjects they address, the legacy they left,
and the fabric of the songs themselves. Chronically arranged
entries cover nearly 70 years of music and offer an expansive range
of genres, including rock, punk, pop, soul, hip-hop, country, folk,
indie, heavy metal, and more.
Each entry discusses the songwriter(s); the inspiration behind
the song; and the social, cultural, and political context in which
the song was released. Following a detailed musical and lyrical
analysis, the entries explain the songs' impact and relevance
today. Among the featured:
The Unknown Soldier (The Doors)
Masters of War (Bob Dylan)
Say It Loud-I'm Black and I'm Proud (James Brown)
Get Up, Stand Up (The Wailers)
Big Yellow Taxi (Joni Mitchell)
Their Law (Prodigy)
American Idiot (Green Day)
Sweet Home Alabama (Lynrd Skynrd)
Born in the USA (Bruce Springsteen)
Southern Man (Neil Young)
Entries are accompanied by further readings and a select
discographies as well as a comprehensive resource guide at the end
of the book. A must-read for students of music, history, and
politics, this volume offers a unique reflection on the most
significant and moving protest songs in American history.
Core to psychiatry is the practice of assessment, diagnosis and
management. All three elements are subject to identifying the
correct diagnosis and all three influence the clinical management
of individuals with a mental disorder. This easy-to-comprehend,
list-based book presents mnemonics to aid immediate recall of the
International Classification of Diseases and Related Health
Problems (ICD 10) for prompt diagnosis in psychiatry. Used in
conjunction with other ICD 10 guides, this remarkable resource is
ideal for memorising the myriad complexities of the ICD 10 for
anyone with an interest in learning about diagnostic coding in
psychiatry including medical students, psychiatry trainees and
mental health professionals. During my time revising for my
psychiatry postgraduate examinations, I found learning of ICD 10
for diagnosis particularly testing, especially given the depth and
complexity of the criteria. I found aide memoires in the form of
mnemonics particularly helpful to support my learning of the
subject, allowing for much more efficient recall. From the Preface
Research shows that biochemical imbalances caused by nutritional
deficiencies are a contributory factor in chronic illnesses such as
cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune conditions and
cancer. This handbook for practitioners explains how to identify
and treat such biochemical imbalances in order to better understand
and manage a patient's ill-health. The book examines a range of
biochemical imbalances, including compromised adrenal or thyroid
function, gastro-intestinal imbalances, immune system problems and
sex hormone imbalances, and explains how and why such states occur.
It pulls together a wide range of evidence to show how such
imbalances are involved in the most common chronic diseases. It
helps practitioners to understand how to identify the imbalances
through appropriate case history taking and laboratory testing, and
how to design and implement effective nutritional interventions.
Developed by leading academics and practitioners in the fields of
nutritional therapy and functional medicine, this evidence-informed
approach can be used with all patients who present in clinic,
regardless of whether or not they have a 'named medical condition'.
In the final chapter, a case example illustrates how to use the
theoretical information in the practice of treating patients with
chronically compromised health. Biochemical Imbalances in Disease
is an essential text for nutritional therapy practitioners, as well
as for students, and will be welcomed by complementary and
conventional healthcare practitioners alike.
