Sources of Dramatic Theory: Volume 1, Plato to Congreve (Hardcover, New): Michael J. Sidnell Sources of Dramatic Theory: Volume 1, Plato to Congreve (Hardcover, New)

R3,658 Discovery Miles 36 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume includes major theoretical writings on drama from the Greeks, through the Renaissance up to the late seventeenth century, compiled and edited for students of drama and theatre. There are substantial extracts from twenty-eight writers including Plato, Aristotle, Horace, Scaliger, Castelvetro, Guarini, Sidney, Jonson, Corneille, Racine, Dryden and Congreve. The compilers have chosen writers who present detailed arguments about issues that are sill relevant to our understanding of drama and theatre. Many of the texts have been freshly translated and all have newly been annotated and introduced by the compilers, who draw attention to recurrent themes by a system of cross-references. Michael Sidnell's useful introduction explores the issues which frequently concern these writers and practitioners: the nature of imitation, the relation of dramatic text to live performance, the effect of stage action on audience emotion and behaviour - issues which still concern critics and theorists of drama today. Later volumes will cover the period from Diderot to Victor Hugo, modern dramatic theory and performance theory.

Faust has been called the fundamental icon of Western culture, and Goethe's inexhaustible poetic drama is the centerpiece of its tradition in literature, music and art. In recent years, this play has experienced something of a renaissance, with a surge of studies, theater productions, press coverage and public discussions. Reflecting this renewed interest, leading Goethe scholars in this volume explore the play's striking modernity within its theatrical framework. The chapters present new aspects such as the virtuality of Faust, the music drama, the modernization of evil, Faust's blindness, the gay Mephistopheles, classic beauty and horror as phantasmagoria, and Goethe's anticipation of modern science, economics and ecology. The book contains an illustrated section on Faust in modern performance, with contributions by renowned directors, critics and dramaturges, and a major interview with Peter Stein, director of the uncut 'millennium production' of Expo 2000.

Pia Kleber, Colin Visser
R936 Discovery Miles 9 360 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume offers a fresh appraisal of the importance of Bertolt Brecht's theory and practice through the documentation of his influence on other dramatists and directors, the examination of how his plays have been interpreted on stage and how his theories have been modified by his followers, and through a selection of the most challenging recent critical approaches to his work. Consideration is also taken of Brecht's influence on contemporary film criticism and his importance for feminist film and theatre. The book will be of interest to scholars and students of drama, literature, German studies and film.
