In 1675, a female vampire possessing the secret of immortality was
burned alive. Forty-five years later, during a dinner at the table
of the French Regent, her then-lover, Marquis de la Roche-Maubert,
discovers that another guest, Chevalier d'Esparron, is in love with
the same immortal woman. However, her attraction to him is not to
satisfy her hunger for blood, but to implement one of the greatest
secrets of alchemy: the transmutation of lead into gold
Pierre-Alexis Ponson du Terrail (1829-1871) was a French popular
writer and a master of the serialized novel, having penned over 200
such works in 20 years. He is justly famous for his character of
Rocambole and his ground-breaking horror novel, The Vampire and the
Devil's Son (1852). The Immortal Woman (1852) is a forgotten
masterpiece of early vampire fiction, and another of Ponson's
classic flirtations with the supernatural.

Paris. Mid-19th century. As the old aristocracy dies off, vast
inheritances become the object of a colossal struggles between the
forces of good and evil. The stalwart Comte de Kergaz and the
dashing reformed courtesan known as Baccarat clash with the
infamous Club of the Jack of Hearts; their leader is none other
than Armand's half-brother, the evil Andrea, a.k.a. Sir Williams.
Standing alone in the midst of this struggle is Rocambole, a
resourceful young man who owes allegiance to none but himself and
whose actions will eventually tilt the balance. The immortal hero
created in 1857 by Ponson du Terrail stars here in two plays, one
written contemporaneously in 1864 chronicling the fall of the Jack
of Hearts, and the other, a modern adaptation penned in 1951
revisiting the very first exploits of a young Rocambole. Both are
translated by playwright Frank J. Morlock who also adapted Lord
Ruthven the Vampire, The Return of Lord Ruthven and the Arshne
Lupin vs Sherlock Holmes stage play for Black Coast Press.
1723. The fearless Baron de Nossac returns from a daring military
mission in Eastern Europe when, crossing the forests of Bohemia, he
is captured by the legendary Black Huntsman, a 900-year-old wraith
who is none other than the Devil's own son. Held prisoner in an
enchanted castle, the Baron is then seduced by a female vampire who
eerily resembles his dead wife... Written in 1852 by the creator of
Rocambole, The Vampire and the Devil's Son is a significant
contribution to the development of modern horror fiction and a
foreshadowing of literary things to come, bringing together for the
first time two major modern archetypes: the seductive female
vampire and the Son of the Devil.
