A new wave of thinkers from across different disciplines within the
analytical tradition in philosophy has recently focused on
critical, societal challenges, such as the silencing and
questioning of the credibility of oppressed groups, the political
polarization that threatens the good functioning of democratic
societies across the globe, or the moral and political significance
of gender, race, or sexual orientation. Appealing to both
well-established and younger international scholars, this volume
delves into some of the most relevant problems and discussions
within the area, bringing together for the first time different
essays within what we deem to be a "political turn in analytic
philosophy." This political turn consists of putting different
conceptual and theoretical tools from epistemology, philosophy of
language, philosophy of mind, and metaphysics at the service of
social and political change. The aim is to ensure a better
understanding of some of the key features of our social
environments in an attempt to achieve a more just and equal
society.
This book presents the current state of experimental philosophy of
language, drawing attention to corpus methods. The volume
highlights new trends in experimental philosophy of language, thus
exploring the future’s discipline. It includes cross-linguistics
studies that reveal the differences and similarities in how
speakers of different languages use specific terms, and scrutinizes
methodological advances used in experimental philosophy of
language. The book also includes politically engaged experimental
philosophy of language studies focusing on slurs, pejoratives, and
hate speech. The topic’s interdisciplinary nature makes the
volume of interest to a broad range of scholars across disciplines
including philosophy, linguistics, philology, psychology, and
computational linguistics.
This volume examines the role of English in academic and research
settings in Europe and provides recommendations on the challenges
posed by the dominance of English over national languages as
languages of science and research dissemination; the need for
language support for academics that need to disseminate their
research in English; and the effect of past and present language
policies.
While the historic roots of clinical chemistry originate from the
chemical sciences the growth of the subject has been dependent upon
the poli tical, social, economic and technologic national soil in
which it has developed. Thus the present leaders in this field have
backgrounds variously in chemistry, medicine, pharmacy or sometimes
biology. Today, clinical chemistry has attained stature as a
unified independent discipline. It is characterized by active and
productive international and national societies; its function
codified in the law of many countries; its scientific content the
sole subject of international and national journals as well as
textbooks and educational programs; and its inter national,
regional and national meetings have become focal points for major
exchange of scientific, clinical and technical information and
exhibition. The positive impact of the discipline upon the delivery
of health care has given it a significant position in the economics
of public health. As a consequence it has become the most
rapidly-growing segment of the industrial and commercial component
of health main tenance. These changes have brought the need to
define the educational and training processes to prepare future
leaders of clinical chemistry. The diverse backgrounds of the
present directors of clinical chemicallabora tories has required
that the viewpoints of chemists, pharmacists, physicians and
biologists be brought into harmony. This has been achieved by the
years of discussion, debate and review by colleagues of varied
professional backgrounds. This monograph reflects their consensus
viewpoint for the practice of clinical chemistry at its most
advanced level."
This edited book analyses current trends in science communication
and gathers research on practices related to the construction of
digital identity and visibility, emerging conflicts related to the
public availability and appropriation of scientific culture, and
ways of validating and disseminating scientific knowledge in new
digital contexts. Drawing on a selection of papers presented in the
InterGedi Conference (Zaragoza, December 2021), the main goal of
the volume is to identify and explore emerging professional
practices and challenges in the digital communication of science
through innovative multimodal genres. This book will be of interest
to postgraduates, doctoral students, practitioners and researchers
in the fields of discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, digital
media, multimodality and communication studies.
The post-independence integration endeavor of the East African
Community has been punctuated with challenges, culminating into the
collapse of the 1967-1977 regional organization. The renaissance of
the integration agenda since the re-establishment of the regional
organization in 1999 has rekindled epistemological debate among
scholars and practitioners on the East African Community raison
d'etre and integration process. This volume is the first of its
kind in this ongoing debate that puts into proper context the nexus
between the East African citizens and the integration agenda.
Focusing on the Partner States case studies, the authors of the
chapters operationalize the concepts of popular participation,
eastafricanness, eastafricanization, democratization, and
integration. Using political, national constitutions and EAC
treaty, communication and awareness dimensions the authors of the
chapters have analyzed the nexus between the EACcitizens and the
integration process. The study generally proceeds from the premise
that the exclusion of the EAC citizens from exercising their
sovereign rights through popular participation undermines the
prospects for the institutionalization and consolidation of the EAC
identity, eastafricanness, eastafricanization, democratization and
integration.
Six years after the symposium on "Stability and Stabilization of
Enzymes," a second symposium, "Stability and Stabilization of
Biocatalysts," on which this book is based, was organized. At the
symposium, 210 participants representing all continents came
together to learn from 150 oral and poster communications.
The volume brings up-to-date the work already going on, and
identifies possible breakthroughs in the research.
This timely book therefore presents cutting edge developments in
topics such as non-covalent processes in solution, protein
engineering and thermophile enzymes, immobilized enzymes,
non-conventional media, and whole cells.
An excellent addition to the available literature, it will make a
useful contribution to this key area of applied biocatalysis.

able to find a safe haven and a loving home in the country? Author
Bio: Julia Plous was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois where she
