In The Image Business, Steve Powell's autobiography lifts the lid
on the development of sports photography and photojournalism. With
a no holds barred account of his life as a working photographer and
business innovator, he tells of covering world-beating sporting
successes and occasional failures, and of how he built the Allsport
Photographic agency into an industry leader that made him a
millionaire. "The authors' experiences are so vast and often
outrageous that it's easy to forget that this is a true story." L
Lemay. He has worked with everyone from world beating powerboat
racers to Olympic greats such as Seb Coe and Daley Thompson.
Muhammad Ali, Bjorn Borg, Seve Ballesteros and Diego Maradona have
all been his subjects during a lifetime of capturing iconic images.
"In a book market full of often told stories, this is a unique and
compelling read." MarcoVB. Unique insights into the athletes and
administrators who shaped sport over thirty years could only come
from a true insider. He gives a fascinating and fast-paced
narrative of a career that began on the gritty streets of London
and took him to every global arena where sport is played, working
with every major publication and sponsor as he developed ways to
help them deliver their messages. - "This book is right up there
with Phil Knight's "Shoe Dog"." Anonymous Powell reveals the
struggles of an emerging independent agency as it fought to gain
recognition, how it helped break the union stranglehold on Fleet
Street and established Allsport and its photographers as the go-to
source for all that was best in the emerging sports photography
industry. - "This is a thoroughly entertaining book and, I believe,
an important one." R Bundy. Follow his riveting personal narrative
as he describes how he overcame personality clashes that almost
brought the agency to its knees and how riding the tide of
advancing technologies helped create a unique business model.
Always just one step ahead of the opposition, his career mirrors
how he harnessed fast moving changes in the industry to create his
own unique place in sports media history. "(The author) has you
feeling as if you are right there living it alongside him."
Anonymous. This is the story of the man who built the world's
biggest and most famous sports photography business and under whose
guidance, became the first official photographer to the
International Olympic Committee and worked with every major
sporting organisation, governing body and athlete in Europe, and
North America. "A truly inspiring read, by a truly inspiring guy.
His life, his travels keep you reading until the end. What a life,
great read." J Tilley. Finally, the book traces with engaging
candour his learning curve in preparing the company for sale,
turning the business of capturing images into capitalising images
as a business. The buyer was Mark Getty and guided by Powell,
Allsport became a bedrock in the rapidly emerging Getty Images and
made Powell more successful than he could have imagined.
This book presents a translation of and detailed commentary on
Galen's De alimentorum facultatibus - his major work on the
dynamics and kinetics of various foods. It is thus primarily a
physiological treatise rather than a materia medica or a work on
pathology. Galen commences with a short section on the epistemology
of medicine, with a discussion on the attainment, through apodeixis
or demonstration, of scientific truth - a discussion which reveals
the Aristotelian roots of his thinking. The text then covers a wide
range of foods, both common and exotic. Some, such as cereals,
legumes, dairy products and the grape, receive an emphasis that
reflects their importance at the time; others are treated more
cursorily. Dr Powell, an expert in gastroenterology, discusses
Galen's terminology and the background to his views on physiology
and pathology in his introduction, while John Wilkins' foreword
concentrates on the structural and cultural aspects of the work.

This pioneering volume explores time series analysis and
interpretation using a wide range of methods and examples from
terrestrial, marine, and freshwater ecology. The book challenges
readers to discern interdisciplinary processes that can unify
fields as diverse as climatology and epidemiology. The first
section of the book explores the basic concepts of environmental
analysis, reviews state-of-the-art techniques and methodologies,
and offers innovative solutions to analytical problems of longer
time series with special attention to climate change, providing the
reader with the conceptual and methodological tools to analyze
environmental data accurately. The second section examines a
variety of time scales used to describe change, and the variability
within and between different ecosystems, so that diverse systems
may be studied in an integrated way. The final section of the book
illustrates key concepts and themes, based on the results of major
investigations in various time scales, including studies from
arctic sites to human epidemiology. Investigating time series in
the context of ecological functions such as population processes,
community structure, and patch dynamics, this insightful volume
will stimulate cross fertilization among the ecological
disciplines. The broad spectrum of ideas and applications examined
in this volume makes it a useful resource for all ecologists.

Social Welfare, Aging and Social Theory explores how we can
understand the changing relationship between social welfare and
human aging. The book begins by reviewing how historical changes in
society impacted on shaping emergence of scientific approaches to
understand and problematize and bio-medicalize aging as akin to an
illness and disease. The discussion moves to trace how particular
social science theories were developed to reinforce negative
perceptions of aging. The book also develops its own reflexive
approach with in-depth examples of social welfare in national,
international and global contexts in how aging is theorized in the
postmodern world were alternative possibilities can be encountered.

Legislative term limits are reshaping the political landscape in
numerous states; however, few of the effects are consistent across
all states. Everything from the political environment to the level
of legislative professionalism within a state influences the trends
that are often attributed to term limits. To cut through these many
trends and isolate the ones most likely created by term limits,
this volume develops comparisons of states with term limits to
similar states without term limits. The comparisons are organized
by levels of legislative professionalism. The richness of the case
study approach allows the contributors to Legislating Without
Experience to offer valuable insights into the legislative process
in each of the specific states. They also illuminate the individual
idiosyncrasies that enhance or dilute the effects of term limits in
a given state. Rarely does a case study book with multiple
contributors offer apples-to-apples data comparisons. This project
engaged nationally recognized scholars to collect and analyze
comparable data in each state. The loss of major power brokers and
their institutional memory makes the legislature a more chaotic
place. Legislating Without Experience argues that on the whole, the
legislature as an institution has been weakened by term limits.
However, these effects vary from state to state based on the
specifics of the limit and the degree of legislative
professionalism. Importantly, legislative actors are adapting to
the limits and making the best of a difficult situation. This book
will be an excellent reference for students and scholars of state
politics, legislative process, and term limits.

This fifth volume of Advances in Health Care Management examines
international health care management. It consists of 12 papers, one
of which serves as an introduction, with the other papers arranged
into three sections. The first section on patients and providers
focuses on such issues as how socio-cultural forces affect the
health care experience; how hospital providers function differently
under various governance structures; how global strategies affect
providers and patients; and why and how provider organizations
should consider integrating within a health delivery system. The
second section on policy and management addresses such dilemmas as
whether some health care issues are impossible to solve through
traditional policy reforms; how international refugees should
receive health care; and whether policy reform lessons from other
countries can be adapted and applied to transform another country's
health system. The third and final section on performance and
management addresses issues such as whether the quality of care can
be managed at the hospital level, how human resource management can
be benchmarked within and across health care organizations, how
health care informatics and telemedicine can improve the continuity
of care, and whether different ways of accessing care within health
systems can be systemically compared and improved.
Authors from Australia, Chile, Finland, France, Germany, Greece,
South Africa, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States of
America contributed to this volume. They explore the delivery and
organization of care in health systems from Africa, Asia,
Australia, Europe, North America, and South America, encompassing
more than 20countries in their comparisons. The papers included in
this volume were only accepted following a rigorous peer review
process. Each paper, whether solicited or responding to our open
call, went through a double-blind review and revision process. The
result is a select collection of outstanding papers.

From the preface by Joel E. Cohen: "A century from now humanity
will live in a managed - or mismanaged - global garden. We are
debating the need to preserve tropical forests. Farming of the sea
is providing an increasing part of our fish supply. We are
beginning to control atmospheric emissions. In 100 years, we shall
use novel farming practices and genetic engineering of bacteria to
manipulate the methane production of rice fields. The continental
shelf will be providing food, energy, possibly even living space.
To make such intensive management possible will require massive
improvements in data collection and analysis, and especially in our
concepts. A century hence we will live on a wired earth: the oceans
and the crust of the earth will receive the same comprehensive
monitoring now devoted to weather. As the peoples of currently
developing countries increase their levels of wealth, the need for
global management will become irresistible as impatience with the
accidents of nature and intolerance of mismanagement of the
environment - especially of living resources - grow. Our control of
physical perturbations and chemical inputs to the environment will
be judged by the consequences to living organisms and biological
communities. How can we obtain the factual and theoretical
foundation needed to move from our present, fragmented knowledge
and limited abilities to a managed, global garden?" This problem
was addressed in the lectures and workshops of a summer school on
patch dynamics at Cornell University. The school emphasized the
analysis and interpretation of spatial patterns in terrestrial and
marine environments. This book contains the course material of this
school, combining general reviews with specific applications.
We need a bigger vision for the city. It's not enough to plant
individual churches in isolation from each other. The spiritual
need and opportunity of our cities is too big for any one church to
meet alone. Pastors Neil Powell and John James contend that to
truly transform a city, the gospel compels us to create localized,
collaborative church planting movements. They share lessons learned
and principles discovered from their experiences leading a
successful citywide movement. The more willing we are to
collaborate across denominations and networks, the more effectively
we will reach our communities-whatever their size-for Jesus. Come
discover what God can do in our cities when we work together.

This is the first biography of General Sir Edward Bulfin, who rose
to high rank despite his Catholic Irish republican background, at a
time when sensitivities were pronounced. Not only that but by the
outbreak of the Great War, Bulfin was a brigade commander despite
having not attended Sandhurst or Staff College and never commanding
his battalion. In his early career he was a prot g of Buller's and
he made his name in the Boer War. In 1914 Haig credited him with
saving the day at First Ypres despite being wounded and gave him
28th Division. Unable to get on with Gough, he was sent home. He
raised the 60th London Division and took it to France, Salonika and
Egypt where Allenby chose him to command a corps. His success
against the Turks at Gaza, Jerusalem and Megiddo justified
Allenby's confidence. Despite ruthlessly crushing disturbances in
post-war Egypt, Bulfin's beliefs and background led him to refuse
Churchill's order to command the police and army in Ireland. A
private man, Bulfin left few letters and no papers and the author
is to be congratulated on piecing together this fascinating
biography of an enigmatic military figure.
