Carmen is the most famous novella of French author Prosper Merimee,
it formed the basis of the composer Bizet's acclaimed opera of the
same name, and is presented here in hardcover. The titular Carmen
is a Romani woman of astounding beauty, attracting many would-be
suitors and romantic partners with both her physical charms and
intense knowledge of fortune telling. The fast-paced and
high-blooded drama combines lustful romance with tragedy, whereby
jealousy and anger combine to form three episodes fitfully
cascading with tension. The final part of the book is a
non-fictional account of the Romani people, with whom Merimee held
a fascination. It was through study of the customs and practices of
the Romani that he wrote this book, which itself became a scholarly
source as well as the inspiration for Bizet's world famous operatic
composition.
Gogol has made brilliantly colored pictures of his Zaporogues,
which please by their very grotesqueness; but sometimes it is too
evident that he has not drawn them from nature. Moreover, these
character-pictures are framed in such a trivial and romantic
setting that one regrets to see them so ill-placed. The most
prosaic story would have suited them better than these melodramatic
scenes in which are accumulated tragic incidents of famine,
torture, etc. In short, one feels that the author is not at ease on
the ground which he has chosen; his gait is awkward, and the
invariable irony of his style makes the perusal of these melancholy
incidents more painful. This style which, in my opinion, is quite
out of place in some parts of "Taras Bulba," is much more
appropriate in the "Viy," or "King of the Gnomes," a tale of
witchcraft, which amuses and alarms at the same time. The grotesque
easily blends with the marvelous. Recognizing to the full the
poetic side of his subject, the author, while describing the savage
and strange customs of the old-time Cossacks with his usual
precision and exactitude, has easily prepared the way for the
introduction of an element of uncanniness. -- From Prosper
Merimee's Preface to this volume.

When the Basque dragoon Don Jose meets a Gypsy woman at the factory
he is guarding, he is immediately ensnared by her wiles. After she
is arrested for injuring a co-worker and he helps her to flee, he
is imprisoned and demoted, but she repays him at their next meeting
with a day of excess and a night of love. As Carmen continues to
exert her spell, Jose is dragged further and further into a seedy
world of smugglers, robbers, fiery passions and uncontrollable
jealousy - one that he will find difficult to escape alive. Carmen,
the archetype of the amoral femme fatale, is Prosper Merimee's
highest creation, and a model for many subsequent literary
heroines. First published in 1846, this story of crime and desire -
here accompanied by another famous novella by Merimee, The Venus of
Ille - has been adapted into a number of dramatic works, including
the famous 1875 opera of the same name by Georges Bizet.
