Epopeya de los heroicos viajes de Eneas, mitico fundador de Roma. Traduccion, prologos, estudios preliminares y notas de Emilio Gomez De Miguel y el celebre critico literario Juan Bautista Bergua. El poeta romano Virgilio (Publio Virgilio Maron, 70-19 a.C.), llamado el "Homero latino," es presentado aqui con su obra maestra, la Eneida. Esta epopeya puede considerarse como una reescritura o continuacion de los miticos poemas homericos la Iliada y la Odisea. La Eneida cuenta la historia de los sobrevivientes de la guerra de Troya que logran escapar de la ciudad despues de caer en poder de los aqueos de Odiseo. Protagonizado por Eneas, heroe troyano e hijo de Venus, cuenta las peripecias de su flota de 20 naves en la peregrinacion a Italia. En el viaje que dura siete anos, se encuentran a muchos dioses algunos que les ayudan y otros que intentan que naufraguen. En busca del lugar prometido, los descendientes de Eneas fundaran una nueva ciudad - Roma. La Eneida, escrita bajo los auspicios del emperador Augusto, resalta las virtudes romanas y consigue crea un mito con el fin de glorificar al Imperio.
Dos inmortales poemas de la vida campesina por Virgilio, el Homero latino. Traduccion, prologos, estudios preliminares y notas de Emilio Gomez de Miguel y el celebre critico literario Juan Bautista Bergua. Virgilio (70-19 a.C.), a veces llamado "el Homero latino" por su obra maestra La Eneida, escribio dos poemas de la vida campesina, Las Bucolicas y Las Georgicas. Gracias a su amistad con Octavio (que mas tarde fue el primer imperador romano, Augusto) y la proteccion de Cayo Mecenas, Virgilio pudo dedicarse a su obra literaria y ser aceptado como el mejor poeta de su epoca. Las Bucolicas (o Eglogas) son poemas pastoriles escritas en hexametros dactilicos donde los protagonistas cantan lamentos y grandezas de la epoca. Aunque inspirado sin duda por Teocrito, Virgilio muestra puntos de vista muy propios. Idealiza a los campesinos y hace frecuentes alusiones a deidades y personajes contemporaneos. Las Georgicas son cuatro poemas didacticos sobre el trabajo de los campos, donde el poeta expresa la necesidad incentivar a la poblacion romana a promover el cultivo de las tierras muy abandonado desde que los campesinos dejaran las tierras en favor de la vida en la ciudad.
