There is a huge collection of literature relating to death, grief and bereavement, but one aspect that has received relatively little attention is that of death management practices (by which we mean the various ways of managing the circumstances of the death, ritually acknowledging it and sensitively handling the disposal of the body and so on). While ways of disposing of the dead and grief practices have been thought of as based upon individual responses, grief and bereavement practices can be understood not only by looking at psychological and medical frameworks, but also by examining people as part of a complex structure of social arrangements, institutions, structures, and patterns. By examining the social and institutional structures of various groups around the world, we provide an international framework for a better understanding of the study of dying, death, and bereavement. This book highlights the significance of these matters in an international context, reflecting common themes and important differences. It will highlight common themes across diverse cultures and national settings, while also drawing attention to significant differences. If professionals working in the field of death, grief and bereavement are not aware of such differences, their practice can be insensitive, discriminatory and therefore ineffective, if not actually counterproductive. In a context of disciplinary division between human and physical geography, the book seeks to reassert the unity of the field through an emphasis on a shared focus on the geographic configuration of things and how and why configuration is important. It first examines previous approaches to reestablishing unity, and why they have failed, before moving on to an explanation of fundamental differences in what is being studied and how. The role of configuration looms large in both. This is in the sense of contingency and the idea of emergence, suggesting that reconstruction of unity can proceed through an exchange of models of understanding. Queues for service of one kind or another arise in many different fields of activity. In recent years a considerable amount of research has been conducted into the properties of simplified mathematical models of such queueing systems. Our objects in the present mono graph are threefold. First we have tried, especially in Chapter I, to give an account of the general ideas that are useful in describing and thinking about queueing systems. Secondly, we have illustrated by examples some of the mathematical techniques that are useful for the study of these systems. Finally, we have given some explicit mathematical results which may be useful in practical investigations. A recent bibliography gave some 600 papers on queueing and allied subjects. Clearly we cannot, in the modest limits of the present work, cover more than a small proportion of the huge amount of material available. However, some results that we have not had space to discuss in detail have been given in outline in the form of exercises."

Although all advanced industrial societies have urban and regional developmentpolicies, such policy in the United States historically has taken on a very distinct form. Compared with the more top-down, centrally orchestrated approaches of Western European countries, US cities and, to a lesser degree, states, take the lead, spurred on by developers and those with interest in rent. This bottom-up policy creates conflict as one city battles with another for new investments and as real estate developers fight over the spoils, resulting in highly contentious politics. In The Politics of Urban and Regional Development and the American Exception, Cox addresses the question of why US policy is so unique. In doing so, he illustrates the essential characteristics of American regional development through a series of case studies including housing politics in Silicon Valley; the history of the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport; and a major redevelopment project that was rebuffed in Columbus, Ohio. Observations in the form of point events occurring in a continuum, space or time, arise in many fields of study. In writing this monograph on statistical techniques for dealing with such data, we have three objectives. First, we have tried to give a simple description, with numerical examples, of the main methods that have been proposed. We hope that by concentrating on the examples the applied statistician with a limited inclination for theory will find something of practical value in the monograph. Second, the monograph is intended as a survey, necessarily incomplete, of some of the problems in theoretical statistics that stem from this sort of data. A number of specialized subjects have, however, been dealt with only briefly, the main emphasis being placed on the problem of examining the structure of a series of events. Finally, we hope that the monograph will be of use to teachers and students of statistics, as illustrating applications of a range of tech niques in theoretical statistics.
